Dr. William B. Laughlin

Dr. William B. Laughlin was born in Washington Co. Pa.

Dr Benjamin Rush was an instructor at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pa, where William B. Laughlin studied several professions for six years between the ages of 21 to 27 years of age, including medicine.  [Note: Jefferson College and Washington College were early colleges of higher education; these colleges later merged into Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA which still is in operation.

Later, Dr. Laughlin founded the County of Rush and the town of Rushville Indiana.  Dr Laughlin named the county and town after his former professor, Dr. Rush, who signed the Declaration of Independence.  Dr. Laughlin donated land and money for the first school, library, Presbyterian Church (it is still there), and the mill.

Dr. William B. Laughlin and his wife, nee Ruth McKinnon of Scottish parents,, are buried in the Old Lower Graveyard in Rushville.
