Family of Daniel and Anna England Lane

In about 1809, John Lane, Sr. had come to Washington County, PA with his then two children and wife Catherine Baker, and her parents and at least 1 brother, Phillip Baker.  We thnk Catherine Baker died around 1822 which fits the illnesses and deaths resulting from "The Summer That Never Was" which killed Joseph Baker in 1815, Phillip Baker in 1816, and others.

John Lane Sr lived until Dec 1844.  His land was absorbed into acreage of Jacob Dager, the father of Anna Dager who had married Joseph Lane before 1830 and moved to Carroll Co., Ohio.  Older brother had moved around the same time with his wife, Susannah McClure, to Ripley Co., Indiana.

Several years after John Lane Sr died, Daniel and Anna bought their own farm, in 1847, located on Zediker Station Road in South Strabane Township where they lived the remainder of their lives.  The original log cabin by 1900s was covered in white-clapboard.  Later owned by Robert O. McKahan, it passed to his daughter Gladys McKahan who recently sold Daniel Lane's log cabin, along with the large barn built ca. 1890, to Murphy's landscaping.

Daniel and Anna were married about 1832. They were devout Brethren (Church of the Brethren, often called Dunkards) and were members in their early lives of the Ten Mile Brethren Church, located in West Bethlehem Township, and in their later lives of the Pigeon Creek Brethren Church, located in North Bethlehem Township.  The South Pigeon Creek Church was the daughter church of Ten Mile Church of the Brethren.  The full congregation alternated services between the 2 physical churches between 1866 when South Pigeon Creek Dunkard Church was built, and until the church was struck by lightning, caught fire, and was subsequently torn down (after 1930s-40s). The cemetery still exists and locals refer to it as the Tombaugh-Leatherman Cemetery because of the large and numerous headstones for those families.  However, the Lane and extended family are also buried there, with most of the Flowers family in unmarked graves. Rev. Daniel Lane is buried here with his wife and at least 1 child.

At the time this picture was taken, Daniel was the minister of the Ten Mile Brethren Church and he is holding a open bible in his lap.  (He also preached at South Pigeon Creek Dunkard Brethren Church.)

Anna is holding the youngest of their children, James Polk Lane, who was born 9 Mar 1845.

Sitting on the steps in the back left is Mary Jane Lane who was born 15 Nov 1833 and in the back right is an unknown male Lane who was born about 1835.

Sitting on the steps in the front left is an unknown female Lane who was born about 1840 and in the front right is Robert Johnson Lane who was born 14 Sept 1842.

Anna England Lane died 10 Apr 1891 in South Strabane Township and is buried in Pigeon Creek Dunkard Church Cemetery (also known as Leatherman Cemetery), North Bethlehem Township, Washington Co., PA.

Daniel Lane died 10 Nov 1885 in South Strabane Township and is also buried in Pigeon Creek Brethren (Dunkard) Church Cemetery (also known as Leatherman Cemetery), North Bethlehem Township, Washington Co., PA.

Mary Jane Lane was married to Reuben Baile on 10 Mar 1853 and she died 15 Feb 1896 in South Strabane Township, Washington Co., PA.

The unknown male Lane and the unknown female Lane both died before 1850.

Robert Johnson Lane was married to Sarah Ellen Moore on 8 Nov 1866 and he died 18 May 1918 in Glendora, Los Angeles Co., CA.

James Polk Lane was married to Jane Catherine Denman on 7 Mar 1871 and he died 18 Jan 1929 in Washington Co., PA.
