Walkout Result of Upriver Suspension Affecting Two Mines
Crescent Workers of Republic Steel Co. Had Just Got Return Orders After Ice Suspension -- SYMPATHETIC TO NEW MINE STAFFING STRIKE
SURNAMES: WRIGHT, CAIRNS
Crescent Two mine of the Republic Steel Co. was idle today because of a wildcat walkout in sympathy with workers of the Fredericktown district who put down their tools in objection to the staffing of Agnes mine opened by the company.
Crescent pit, located in Fallowfield township, employs about 600 men and is one of Washington county's principal captive pits.
Workers were just returning tto work this week after a long suspension enforced by icy condition (sic) of the Monongahela river (sic).
It was understood that an attempt was made by the company to put a man to work at Agnes mine, near Clyde, but developed trouble staffing this operation. Clyde and Agnes came out yesterday [i.e. stopped work], Crescent joined in sympathy yesterday and Banning [joined] today.
Ken WRIGHT, Roscoe, president of the Crescent local of the United Mine Workers of America, could not be located for a statement. Neither could Andrew CAIRNS, another official. They were out of town for a time this morning, it was said.
Agnes and Clyde mines, near Fredericktown, remained-idle. Crescent men did not report for the shifts yesterday afternoon. Today Banning mine of the same company was down [i.e. stopped work].
