The 1870 census lists Henry at Macedonia, Asylum Township as a carpenter.

Henry is listed as a pensioner receiving $10/month with date of original allowance July 1880. Certificate # 171,810 lists him living at Macedonia with bronchitis. Enlisted in Civil War at Troy, Pa. with Co. D, 2nd Regiment, Pa. Heavy Artillery. Reported to Carlisle Barracks, Pa. April 4, 1864, forwarded to Ft. Marcy, Va. May to Nov, he was in hospital at Lovell General, Portsmouth Grove, RI. Assigned to Co. B, 112 Regiment Nov 1864 & was Artificer throughout his enlistment when he was mustered out on Oct 31, 1865 at City Point, VA., dated Jan 29, 1866. When he enlisted at Troy, he was paid a bounty of $400 for being a veteran volunteer, having served in the 171st Regt. Co. D as a Sergeant, until 1863. The Bradford County History, by Rev. David Craft, lists the record of this civil war veteran as follows: Henry W. Carner, Srgt.; enlisted Nov 5, 1862. Mustered out with Company D, 171st Regt. on Aug 8, 1863. (page 484). Also, the census of 1900 of Athens Boro, Bradford Co., Pa., lists Henry Carner, Dec 1824, age 75, living with his wife Hannah A., Nov 1830, age 69.

She was a mother of seven children, with three living at the time of the 1900 census. Death notes! Source is The Evening News, dated Monday May 12, 1913 obituary as follows; Henry W. Carner, a native of this place, and a well known and highly respected citizen, passed away at the People's Hospital Saturday afternoon after an illness of a year and three months following a fracture of the hip which he sustained by falling on an icy walk February 5, 1912. He was operated on at the People's Hospital two weeks ago and his condition was favorable up to Saturday when death came suddenly. The deceased was 88 years of age and was born on the Tioga Point farm in the year 1825. When six years of age his mother died and until he became of age he lived with Henry Welles on the Point farm. He then went to Monroeton where he followed the pursuits of a carpenter and joiner and millwright. February 9, 1849 he was married to Miss Anna Coolbaugh of Macedonia this county. In company with his wife he went back to Monroeton where he remained some time. They then went to Ohio where they resided a year. Mrs. Carner then returned to Monroeton and he started for California with a large drove of cattle. He had several men in his employ and the trip was made by wagon and horseback across the vast stretches of wild prairie land and mountains. The company was over five months making the trip. Mr. Carner's brother, Charles Carner started out ahead of him with his family but he never reached his destination. He was stricken with cholera and was buried beside the trail. A little wooden post marked the spot and it was found a few days later by the latter company. This was a sad experience for Mr. Carner and he did not remain in California over a year. He returned to the east in 1854. He has resided on Willow Street, Athens for the past 25 years. Mr. Carner enlisted in the Union Army at Towanda on November 5, 1863 as Sergeant in Co. D, 171st Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry under Captain Miner H. Hinman and Col. Everard Biver to serve nine months or during the war. The regiment was assigned to Spinola's Brig., Ferry's division, 18th Corps, and served in the defense of Washington for some time. He was discharged August 8th, 1863 with his company, and reenlisted as a veteran March 29, 1864 in Battery B, 172nd Pennsylvania Second Heavy Artillery under Captain Richard C. Horner and Col. August Gibson to serve three years or during the war. The battery was assigned to the second brigade, second division, 18th Corps, Army of the James and participated in the siege of Petersburg, June 15, 1864, April 2nd, 1865; Fort Harrison, VA., September 28 - 30, 1864. It also served in the defense of Washington, D.C. for a long period. Mr. Carner was confined in hospitals at Washington, D.C., Portsmouth Grove, NJ., and Satterlee, Philadelphia, after which he rejoined his battery at White House Landing, VA. He was promoted to artificer February 23, 1865 and was honorably discharged at City Point, VA. with his battery, January 29th, 1866. He is survived by his widow and one brother, George Carner and two daughters, Mrs. R.J. Mulligan and Mrs. Emma J. McClarty of Athens. The funeral was held from the house this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. David R. Evans officiating. Interment was made in Tioga Point Cemetery. The services were in charge of Perkins Post, G.A.R. (end). Other notes: Photo of Henry came from Jane McNett of Elmira, NY., a descendant of Daniel Heverly of Overton. The reason Henry went to live with Henry Welles is because Henry Welles’s wife was a sister to Henry Carner's mother. Samuel Hinchliff paid Henry & his brother John S. a sum of $300.00 to take him & his family to California.

Henry married HANNAH Ann COOLBAUGH, daughter of John COOLBAUGH and ELIZABETH "BETSY" SHERMAN, on 4 Feb 1849 in MACEDONIA, BRAD, PA. HANNAH was born 16 Nov 1830 in MACEDONIA, Bradford Co., PA. She died 21 Nov 1914 in Athens, Bradford Co., PA and was buried in TIOGA POINT CEM, Athens, PA.

Source: Census 1870 Asylum Township. Married by Elder Brown in Macedonia, Pa. on Feb 04 1849. They began housekeeping in Monroeton, Pa., where they lived for one year, then moved to Macedonia. In 1851 they moved to Ohio for 1 yr. Henry then went west with John S. Carner & Samuel Hinchliff, Hannah returning home to Macedonia. (I have a written report of his journeys) Henry & Hannah had the following children: Henry E., Emma J., Franklyn M., Edwin M., George S., Charles W., Dorcie S., & Henrietta E.  Charles & Dorcie died when they were very young. Their tombstones are in the graveyard at Macedonia, Pa., by the present I.O.O.F hall.

She lived with her daughter, Emma McClarty, at Athens, Pa., during her final years.

They had the following children:

                2    M         i.    Henry E. CARNER was born 25 Feb 1853 in MACEDONIA, PA.

Henry is listed as a surviving relative on a document that is in Henry's National Archive's file titled "Dept of Interior", Bureau of Pensions, which is dated May 4, 1898 & lists Henri, Emma & George as still living. Source: Federal census 1920 Bradford County, Pa., Overton Township lists as follows: Henry Carner age 63, and wife Marie, and Eliza Smith (niece) age 15 living with them.

3    F          ii.    EMMA J. CARNER was born 27 Mar 1856 in MACEDONIA, Bradford, PA. She died about 1930 in Athens, Bradford, PA and was buried in TIOGA POINT CEM, Athens, PA.

Emma’s tombstone is next to Henry & Hannah Carner, her parents, at the Tioga Point cemetery in Athens, Pa. Also, the 1900 census of Athens Boro, Bradford Co., Pa., lists this family: David Mc Clarity, born Nov 1854, age 45, born in N.Y. state, his father & mother both born in Ireland. Emma, born Nov 1854, in Pa., her parent's both born in Pa.

EMMA married David J. MCCLARTY on 16 May 1888. David was born about Nov 1854 in NY. He died in Athens, Bradford, PA.

I went to the Tioga Cemetery office in Athens, but they had no listing of a burial of David McClarty, but had a Daniel McClarty, whose wife's name was Emma. I went to the grave marker of Daniel and Emma, but they are definitely not the David and Emma who are related to Carners. July 7, 1995.

                4    F         iii.    HENRIETTA E. CARNER was born 25 Feb 1857.

"Henri," as she is referred to on her pictures from Helen Walker of Sayre, PA., is buried in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA., next to her husband. Her name on her tombstone is Henri.

HENRIETTA married Robert J. MULLIGAN about 1883. Robert was born 1854. He died 4 Mar 1934 in Athens, Bradford, PA and was buried in TIOGA POINT CEM, Athens, PA.

Marie Carner Jones thinks Mr. Mulligan was Chief of Police in Athens, PA. I went to the Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens where Robert is buried. I obtained his birth & death year from his stone. On a separate stone next to Robert's is one marked Henri C. Mulligan 1852 - 1934. On a separate stone next to Henri's is one marked Charles H. Mulligan 1886 - 19__. More research is needed to prove that this Henri is his wife named Henrietta, and their son Charles. It is also interesting to note that Robert's stone is located between Henry and Hannah Carner's stone and the stone of Curtis and Ina Carner Epley.

5    M       iv.    Franklin M. CARNER was born 19 Aug 1858 in MACEDONIA, Bradford Co., PA. He died 14 Apr 1888 in MACEDONIA, Bradford Co., PA and was buried in MACEDONIA CEM., Bradford Co., PA.

Franklin is buried in the Macedonia, Bradford County, Cemetery, next to the I.O.O.F. building.

Franklin married Ida MILLER. Ida was born about 1850. She died in MACEDONIA, Bradford, PA and was buried in MACEDONIA CEM, MACEDONIA, PA.

                6    M        v.    EDWIN M. CARNER was born 9 Apr 1860. He died 17 Sep 1891.

EDWIN married CARRIE LYTLE on 3 Sep 1885. CARRIE was born about 1860.

+              7    M       vi.    George S. CARNER was born 22 Sep 1862 and died 1 Jul 1901.

8    M      vii.    Charles S. CARNER was born 9 Jul 1867 in MACEDONIA, PA. He died 11 Dec 1869 in MACEDONIA, PA and was buried in MACEDONIA CEM., Bradford Co., PA.

9    M     viii.    DORSEY S. CARNER was born 19 Apr 1869 in MACEDONIA, PA. He died 19 Aug 1881 in MACEDONIA CEM, BRAD, PA.

7.     George S. CARNER (Henry WELLES) was born 22 Sep 1862 in MACEDONIA, Bradford, PA. He died 1 Jul 1901 in Overton, Bradford, PA and was buried 3 Jul 1901 in ST PAUL REFORMED, Overton, PA.

George was a carpenter and a dairy farmer in Overton area. His father was a carpenter. The family surname was originally spelled "Karner" and is of Holland origin. George died from falling off the third ward school building in Towanda, Pa., where he was working as a carpenter. He had fainted from a sun stroke. Source of burial place: The History of Overton, by C.F. Heverly, published in 1910 page 136. Also, I visited this cemetery and confirmed his birth & death dates. His death is recorded in the "Register of Deaths" in the Bradford County Court House, Towanda, PA. The cupola (steeple) from the third ward school was removed when it was torn down after the new school was built in Towanda. This cupola is now in the back yard of George's Great-great grandson Gene Rockwell of Spring Lake, Asylum Township, Bradford County, PA.

About 1917, she married Otis Richar & resided at 412 Stevenson Street, Sayre, Pa. She learned the Millinery trade early in life, which she worked at for a time. Heverly's obituary notice in the Daily Review dated January 7, 1924, as Mrs. Arthur Richar.

Editor's Note: Both George and Arvilla are buried at St. Paul's Cemetery in Overton, PA.

Larry was a noted outdoorsman and sportsman, serving as deputy game and fish warden for several years. He served in the Army as a Military Policeman mainly in the state of Washington and Germany. He then drove truck for a paving company and worked at Hardinge Brothers in Elmira. He then obtained a job at Sylvania in Towanda and worked there 28 years. He lived & owned a small farm on Bridge Street Hill where he had several ponds that he stocked. He also raised a variety of farm animals such as beef cattle, guinea hens, turkeys, sometimes including ringnecks and other wildlife to release into the wilds for hunting purposes. He had a variety of friends who hunted and fished with him.

I remember the time Larry took me, and my 2 sons fishing down Satterlee Hollow for native trout. We put a fresh 6 pack of beer in the culvert near the Monroeton Rod & Gun Club, so when we returned from fishing the creek from top to bottom, there would be some "Cool-Ones" waiting for us. We also were fishing one time through the ice under the Towanda Bridge that crossed the river on Rte 6. We had a fire built up against the concrete abutment, and the concrete exploded because of the hot fire up against the real cold pier. Curly's pipe went flying across the ice and broke in half. The rest of us went scattering from the fear. No one got hurt, but we all remembered the experience, even though we didn't catch any fish that day. Larry died at age 56 yrs.(Graduated from Towanda High School, Towanda, Pa. 1952.)
