The Kohenspargers who eventually
came to Sullivan County, PA emigrated to the US on August 3, 1829. They arrived in New York from LeHavre,
France on the Great Britain.
This is their story. If you
have additions, comments, corrections or just want to say HI, I can be reached
at brotzmans@epix.net. I think you
should check out the Sullivan Gen web project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~pasulliv/
where a plethora of information can be found including many obits and marriage
references from Tina Pastusic which are used here, and the Tri County Web
Site, which focuses on the communities in northern Pennsylvania where the Coganspargers lived. Both have great searc engines and are gaining
more data daily.
This family project of the
Kohensparger name, and all its variations of name spellings for its families of
Sullivan, Wyoming, Bradford and Columbia Counties of Pennsylvania, is focused on probably
the most misspelled name on the Internet. One cannot really say it is
misspelled, as we dont know what the accepted spelling in the United States
actually is. As you read about this family you will see they have changed the
last name spelling numerous times, not to mention how the census takers murdered
it. You will read later in this article how DG leads you through the
original name change variations to what we have once they arrived and branched
out in the US.
One branch changed their spelling
to match the military records of the United States government in order to
receive a pension from the Civil War. That was very common, even though the
pensions were not much, even as low as a few dollars but it was much needed
money by desperate families. Men came home disabled for life or even worse, in
many cases did not return. Even after World War I names were still being changed
to match the government records. If a soldiers name was spelled differently on
the military papers than his or her civilian name, you did not qualify for
benefits. Thus just pointing out why many families have variations of name
spellings but in turn are the same family.
DG, formerly of
Switzerland and now of California, and I have put much time and effort into
finding many of the branches of this family. DG's interest is to take them
back to the same origins as he has in Alsace, France where many of the families
of Sullivan County originated. Mine is purely to bring them forward and
intertwine them with the basics of our local families. Together we have
accomplished many of our goals.
DG, being from
Switzerland, is fluent in the German language and has translated the old German
Peace Church records for us all to enjoy too. They can be found on this site as well. What a
treasure they are: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pasulliv/churches/PeaceChurchRecords.htm
This is
how Sullivan County GenWeb found DG, or did he find
us?
Hello
Mr. Sweeney
I came across your name
on the Internet and must congratulate you for the very detailed and visually
appealing website dedicated to Sullivan County
history.
I wonder if you would
be kind enough to give me perhaps some ideas and directions on a matter of
interest to me that concerns an old Sullivan County pioneer family who I believe
are kin to me.
It
concerns the family and descendants of Henry Kokensparger (originally
Kochersperger) who seems to have arrived in Sullivan County in the mid 1840's, a
native from Wissembourg District of Alsace, France, the German-speaking,
predominantly Lutheran province of France.
I tracked this family
through several Census enumerations and other sources and then they suddenly
disappear after 1900. I have seen the surname variably spelled with both a K and
a C, but luckily it is such a long and rather unusual name it is always fairly
easily spotted.
Of particular interest
to me would be the family's patriarch, Henry, who died at Athens on December
16th, 1904. His wife, Nancy, died the following year in the same place. Her
maiden name, I believe, was Kieler (Keeler) and was a Sullivan County
native.
I don't
know how good Sullivan County's civil registration records are and by a
long-shot idea I hope to find perhaps a death certificate of Henry on which the
names of his parents just might be listed.
I also wondered if by
any chance an obituary notice might have been published on the occasion of his
death.
Any
suggestions as to where to look and/or to whom to write for information would be
greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
yours
About
December 20 2004
Then on
March 17, 2005 Bob and I got this wonderful letter from DG with a big
breakthrough!
Carol
and Bob, incredibly, I found the vessel on which they arrived. The source record by the way is:
New York Immigration Records, March 5th 1829 through April 30th, 1830, National Archives Film No. M237-13
(LDS Family History Library Film No. 0002258).
They
arrived at Port of New York, 3rd August 1829
They
had departed from Le Havre, France
On
the Vessel: "Great Britain"
Rochasperger,
George, 29
Rochasperger,
Catharina, 30
Rochasperger,
George, 6 (= this one is George Cogansparger of Bradford Co.)
Rochasperger,
Henry, 3 (= this one is Henry Kohensparger of La Porte)
Rochasperger,
Magdalena, 2
Rochasperger,
Magdalena, 60
Obviously
the person that transcribed the ship's roster misread
the
old style "K" for an "R"; this happens all the time.
There
were numerous other families from the same origin area
of
Alsace traveling with them.
The
additional surprise is that Georg Jakob's mother, Maria Magdalena (Sttzel)
Kochersperger came to America as well.
On
the same vessel traveled also Martin Ruby with his wife, Maria Eva Kochersperger
Ruby. She was Georg Jakob's cousin. Georg Jakob's older sister, Elisabeth
Barbara Kochersperger and her husband, Michael Ruby (the aforementioned Martin
Ruby's brother), had come to America the year before and settled in Wilmot
Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada. Oddly, in Wilmot Township was a
large colony of people from Pennsylvania that had relocated to Canada after the
War of 1812 (Empire Loyalists). All comes full circle, does it not?
.
Best
regards
DG
Now DG
has got it all together and rather marvelously I might
add:
Kochersperger Kohensparger
Kokensparger Cogansparger
of Bradford and Sullivan Counties,
Pennsylvania
by DG March
2005
The original immigration records
show that, on the 3rd of August 1829, the sailing vessel Great Britain docked in New
York harbor. It carried, among many others, the family of Georg Jakob
Kochersperger, a native from the tiny village Reimerswiller in Alsace, France.
He was accompanied by his 68-year-old mother, Maria Magdalena [Sttzel]
Kochersperger, his pregnant wife, Catharina [Eyer] and his three children,
Georg, age 7, Heinrich, age 5 and Magdalena, age 3.
Georg Jakob
Kochersperger was the son of Georg Jakob [Sr.] who had been the blacksmith of
Reimerswiller and who had died a few years prior, in 1816. The Kocherspergers
are an old-established family who had been thriving for several generations in
the neighboring village of Rittershoffen. They were actually German-Swiss and
came originally from Bern, Switzerland in the 1660s when Hans Guggisberg
arrived in Rittershoffen, a few years after the end of the Thirty Years War
[1618-1648]. His Bernese-Swiss dialect was not very well understood by the local
village scribes and his name was spelled the way they thought they had heard it
and hence the original Guggisberg became Guggisperger and subsequently
Kochersperger.
Reimerswiller German Reformed Church
Reimerswiller, Alsace
The old Protestant church where Georg Jakob Kochersperger was
baptized and later married and also where three of his elder children were baptized.
The first
and only documented record of Georg Jakob Kochersperger in Pennsylvania is the
1840 Census of Lycoming County. He is listed as George J. Cokenberger, farmer
of Cherry Township. His household consisted of 10 persons, 4 males and 6 females
of varying ages, which attest that several more children were born since his
arrival back in 1829. It seems that his mother had died some time earlier. We
know that Georg Jakob Kochersperger died on the 4th September 1845 and is buried
at Jackson Cemetery in Dushore Township (now part of Sullivan County). His grave marker is shown below. His elder
son, Georg would later move to Bradford County and go by the name George
Cogansparger. His second son, Henry, would live near the town of La Porte and
use the name Henry Kohensparger. All surviving children would intermarry with
the local families of Bradford and Sullivan Counties and there are many
descendants today.

This family
was not alone in the New World. On the same vessel traveling with Georg Jakob
was his cousin, Maria Eva Kochersperger, the wife of Martin Ruby, who appears to
have settled in Oneida County, New York. His older sister, Barbara, the wife of
Michael Ruby, brother of the above, had arrived in 1828 and settled in Ontario,
Canada. In 1830, his cousin Johann Adam Kochersperger followed with his own
family and settled in the town of Verona in Oneida County, New York. Some 60
years earlier, around 1770, a great-uncle, Johann Martin Kochersperger found his
way to Philadelphia. The latter is the patriarch of the largest group of the
family in the New World today, descendants include numerous historically
significant people in America, the most notable being John Wanamaker, founder of
Wanamakers Department Stores of Philadelphia and New York and one time
Postmaster General under President William Henry Harrison.

Kokensparger, born about 1833; died
before 1900. She married Isaac Lewis shortly before 1850; he was born in 1822 in PA. According to
DG, our source for this relationship, Isaac was farming the original Kohensparger homestead in Cherry Township, PA at that time. They appear in
the Federal census for that year for that community [pages 27-28]. They later appear in the 1860 Federal census for Jackson Township, Columbia County, PA, with three children:
Theodore, age 7; Andrew, age 4; and Daniel, age six months. The parents are still at this location in the 1880 census, but have gone, and presumably died, by the 1900 census. At that time, the son Andrew, now 44 years old, is living in Sugarloaf Township, PA. What became of the various children? The LDS records say Theodore Thomas
Lewis died in 1896. Daniel was working on the farm of Janus and Phebe Dewitt in Fishing Creek, Columbia County, PA in 1880. There were at least six other children born after 1860 as well: Jacob (1862), Henry (1864), Fernando (1867), Irma R. (1871), Mary Elizabeth (1874) and Brittain G. Lewis (about 1879).
Theodore Lewis eventually married Sarah McHenry and they had a son, Thomas Lewis, born in 1878.
Tina Pastusic found this reference to Ellen and her brother, Henry Kohensperger, in an 1889 newspaper anecdote:
Laporte, PA
February 15, 1889
Mr. Henry Kohensperger of Laporte township was visiting friends in Columbia county last week. His sister Mrs. Issac Lewis of Benton accompanied him home and will spend several days at the Eagles Hotel.
Tina also checked the Benton Cemetery, Benton Township, Columbia County, PA on September 11, 2005. She didn't find a stone for Ellen. The only Lewis stones in the cemetery were the previously mentioned son, Theodore Lewis, who died March 11, 1896, and Claude M. (1918-1974), relationship if any unknown. Theodore's stone is broken off just below the dates. As DG speculates, this condition would be indicative that the burial plot has been abandonned for a long time and no close relatives were nearby to care for the upkeep. He supposes that Theodore's parents probably were interred in the same place, possibly had wooden markers which have rotten away, but in any case have been "lost" for now due to time and inattention.

The following paragraph was included in email correspondence from Bartlow family historian Betty Jean Bartlow Wilkins to myself on 5 Jun 2008:
Several years ago I did some research on the Freeman Kokensperger family. Time doesn't allow my checking their file, but do I recall correctly that one of his daughter's married a Sharpless? Or was his wife a Sharpless? Freeman and his wife were annual summer visitors of George and Ida Bartlow; my father remembered their visits. They would arrive in their "impressive" car. It is likely that I was told what kind of car, but that I don't remember. The guest bedroom was used on these occasions. The visits probably continued after George died in 1907 since my father was born in 1902 and could remember them. Interesting to me was the fact that one of their four bedrooms was kept for guests. My father had eight siblings; their parents slept in a "bedroom" on the first floor, I was told.

[pertinent ancestry in ascending order: Hazel Woodside, Mary Elada Bartlow, Albert Bartlow, William Bartlow].
Some years ago I set up a very generic website dedicated to
the family in order to convey a general idea about it's background. It is heavily tilted towards the Philadelphia, PA branch of the
family, the oldest in this country, about whom I was able to
gather most information.
Here we go:
Kochersperger Family.
As you probably already found out, the other descendants
of Georg Jakob Kochersperger from Sullivan County, PA that
still carry the surname now spell it as COGANSPARGER
and there are only very few left of them. They now
live in nearby Elmira, NY and it was from them that I received
the images of the Civil War memorabilia document and
the family bible on this page.
I have the entire ancestry of this family going back to the
early 1600's - you are welcome to have it. I would also be glad to include your side of the family in the big
family tree (over 3000 persons) if you can provide me with
all the details from Josiah on down to you.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Josiahs mother Catherine
Cogansparger got a mothers pension for her son. She had to prove he supported

The family tells us that the
reason for the name charge to being spelled with a C and a G instead of an H is
so she could obtain the pension. The Government spelled his name wrong, so she
had to spell her name the same way in order to match to receive his
benefits.

In July 2007, DG provided the following additonal information on Josiah Cogansparter: I have been researching at the National Archives in
and found quite a lot of interesting
material.
One was the civil war's survivor's pension application of
Josiah Cogansparger from Bradford County, PA,
son of George Kochersperger
and Catherine Cranmer Cogansparger (family later changed the spelling
of the
name from the original Kochersperger to Cogansparger). The archive sent me the
contents of
the entire dossier, which included information, that Josiah's
father had committed suicide in 1870, something
I did not know. It also
contained numerous affidavits from neighbors attesting to the financial
hardship
the family was in to allow them to get a small pension from the
Federal Government.
It also contained, and that is quite amazing, two
original handwritten letters Josiah had sent home to
his father while he was
serving in the Union Army. The originals are located at the National Archives [NARA], Washington, DC [Civil War Pension File 176.798].
Both of them I transcribed below (spelling errors left
purposely intact--click on the links to see the original two page letter).

says he died Dec. 19th and was 83 years old, not 81 (1900 Census lists birth Sep

Letter
written to Linda McDonald from Ernest Hatton, Tuesday, April 11,
2000
Linda,
I have part
of the answer to your question.
The
children of Peter Dohm and Katherine Kokensparger were 1)Harriet Dohm b. about
1860 she married James J. Wood, they lived next door to my grandparents Charles
William "Bill" and Louise (Orlowski) Hatton in Bernice.(I lived with them for
awhile during WW2.) 2) Frank Dohm born 1858 married Augusta Rinebnld. Frank was
born in LaPorte. The daughter of Frank and Augusta was Elizabeth" Bessie" Mae
Dohm born 1885. 3) Hannah Dohm b.28 June 1863, died 1 Feb. 1933 married George Philip Karge, born Towanda 18,
September 1857.
The
Dudicums and Oechsles (spelled Oechsley on his gravestone) were from Murrhardt,
Germany. I'm trying to get additional information on them now, but those two
families still have relatives just outside of Murrhardt and the Oechsles have a
business in Murrhardt ( Otto Oechsle). This was given to me by another
researcher who contacted me from a German list. The
Dudicums,
Oechsles (
Exleys) and Karge families are related.
I believe
Valentine Dohm and Catherine Hunsinger are the parents of Peter Dohm, b. 1863,
died 15 March 1933 and 2) Joseph Dohm b. 1860 died 23 Jan. 1930. Based on that,
Peter and Valentine Dohm were brothers. Urban Dohm who arrived 1852 was probably
another brother. He had a daughter Elizabeth b. 1875, mother not known to me.
Take a breath...
Okay, now
additional information told to me by my Exley family and her grandson Ron
Potter..
The first
Elizabeth "Bessie" Dohm, daughter of Frank, was not the daughter of Augusta. Her
mother, unknown, abandoned her. She was born May 1885. Frank and Augusta were
married in 1885.Bessie married
James Blaine Potter of Sugar Hill.
August
Oechsle was the son, according to the family, of a Dudicum. He was born in
Murrhardt Germany and is buried with the Dudicum family. I have his wife as
Caroline Shuster ( noted by the family) but haven't been able to confirm that.
August Oechsle's son was Henry (Heinrich) Exley ( Oechsle), married Mertie C.
Potter. They took over the Potter farm on Sugar Hill. Robert
Arnold
Exley is
still living there with Joan Vogel.
The lane,
as we called it, is now Exley Rd. A side note. The lyrics for the song "Winter
Wonderland" are about that lane on Sugar Hill. "Bessie" Dohm's grandson ( my
cousin Ronald Clifford Potter) lives in Binghamton. Ron is anxious to find out
who Bessie Dohm's mother was.
The
Dudichum name is also spelled Dudicum in Germany.
I would
"speculate" that there were at least three brothers Peter, Valentine,
Urban.

Hatton
Ernie
would like to add additional data that he has learned since this letter in 2002
to Linda McDonald
August
Oechsle/Oechsley was born in Murrhardt Germany and is buried with the Dudicum
family. His wife was Caroline Shuster. August Oechsle's son was Henry
Charles(Heinrich Charles Oechsle[y]) Exley. He married Mertie Celia Potter .They
took over the Potter farm on Sugar Hill. Robert Arnold Exley still lives
there with his wife Joan Vogel Exley. There is a relationship between the
Oechsle[y]/Exleys and Dudicum/Duduchum but that relationship is not known. It is
possible that one of Caroline Schuster/Shuster's sisters was married to a
Dudicum/Dudichum. Mertie Celia Potter was baptized as adult married to
Henry Oechsley. She was baptized as Mertie Oechsle in the German Lutheran
Church. At some period Henry Exley and wife took the name Exley and no longer
used Oechsle[y] indicating clearly that Henry's father was August Oechsle[y] as
stated on Henry Exley's birth certificate that I [Ernest Hatton] had to obtained
from the state of Pennsylvania. When studying old families in Murrhardt I found
both families. The proper spelling for Dudicum was Dudichum, an old family, and
Oechsle was originally from Ochs'. Oechsle from German Ochs ox, Middle
High German ohse; probably a nickname for a strong or lumbering individual,
occupational name for someone who tended or drove oxen, or for a cattle dealer.
August Oechsle[y] was in the Army, nothing else is known. It appears he Mary
Caroline Schuster/Shuster followed to Sullivan were he later died and is buried
at Peace Church. There are no records of any other family members in the
area. (Ernest Hatton January
2004)

Rufus
Hopkins, the well-known proprietor of "Hunters Rest" in the forest beyond
Seeman's, died on Thursday, April 12, aged 68 years, 1 month and 25
days.
Mr.
Hopkins came to Sullivan County in 1851, from Columbia County, and has always
made his home in the backwoods, entertaining hunters and fishermen as a means of
livelihood.
Gentlemanly,
courteous, suave and refined in manners he made friends by the
hundreds.
His was
one of the old families of Pennsylvania. His father at one time represented his
district in congress and was rich in money and landed property. Reverses coming
thick and fast he left his children penniless.
Rufus,
drawn by his love of nature and a natural liking for hunting and fishing, sought
a home in the forests of Sullivan County.
He leaves
a wife and several children, all grown up. His death was caused by dropsy.

Kisner December 21, 1856 in PA, they divorced ** January 11, 1873 in
LaPorte Sullivan County,. PA. He was the son of William Kisner and Sarah
Dieffenbach. He was born July 03,
1830 in Jerseytown, Columbia County, PA, and died May 12, 1925. He remarried to
Loretta Persun in January 1873. Patty Kisner obtained the divorce data in the
divorce papers. What ever happened to Betsey is a big well-kept secret! Hiram and his second wife were buried in
the Thrashers Cemetery, Dushore, PA.
** Editor's Note: Actually, there is some considerable debate about whether Hiram and Betsey were divorced or she just died in 1873, as implied by the extract from the Streby History of Cherry reprinted below. Nearly immediately after the severance, for whatever reason of his first marriage, Hiram married the widow of Charles Arey, Loretta (Persun) Arey, thereby acquiring three stepchildren as well. Charles was killed two miles from Richmond in the Civil War in 1865. If indeed, there was a divorce, then Betsy seems to disappear from the record in Sullivan County. Some correspondents speculate that she went off to live with her son George William Kisner who is known to have obtained land grants in western Canada in the late 19th century.

(Leroy News) Charles
Cogansparger, who formerly lived near this place some time ago, but lately of
Overton, thought he heard some one in his barn a few nights ago. He got up,
dressed himself, took his revolver and went to the barn. In a short time the
report of a gun was heard. As he did not return, the family became alarmed and
began search for him. They found him lying on the barn floor, dead. He had been
shot through the heart. How it happened, still remains a mystery. He leaves a
wife and several children. The remains were brought to Leroy for interment.

several members of the family have committed suicide in the past. Charles left a
wife and four children Yes; he was George's son. Charles' older brother, Josiah,
died at Gettysburg. George, the father, died in 1870. There is in fact a family
bible in existence which is owned by Charles' grandson Russell who lives in
Elmira NY and is about 80 years old. Unfortunately he is not very interested in
genealogy, but was kind enough to read to me over the telephone the names and
dates of the persons listed in the bible. Later on, he was able to arrange for me
to obtain scans, which you can see at The Cogansparger Family Bible.
After he died, Alice, the widow of Charles, remarried.

Notes for
ELIZABETH" BESSY" MAE DOHM from Ernie Hatton:
Augusta Rinebold
was not the mother of Elizabeth. Her mother abandoned the family at childbirth
and Augusta is the only mother she knew. Because Augusta raised her and her
mother is not known I have placed her as the child of Augusta, as certainly she
is the real mother in every sense of the word. However, I thought it necessary
to explain because newspaper clippings list Augusta as the mother because she
immediately became so. A copy of the newspaper article reads; "Frank Dohm" (
Date of article, 13 May 1976) was born in La Porte township, in 1858. His
father, Peter Dohm, was a native of Germany, and came to America, being one of
the early settlers of La Porte Township. Mr. Dohm owns a farm near Sattersfield,
( note was Dohm's Summit ), and is engaged in farming and dairying. In 1885 Mr.
Dohm married Augusta Rinebold, who was born in Germany in 1847, She was a
daughter of Anthony Rinebold, who came from Germany and settled on the farm now
owned by Mr. Dohm. To Mr. and Mrs. Dohm have been born one daughter, Bessie.
(Bessies real mother left immediately for California.) On April 21, 2000 I
received a copy of the Dohm family history compiled by Sharon and July Dohm
1682-1984. There is very little in that report that contributes to the research
that I have already completed, but there is a possible clue regarding Bessie.
Many of the Dohm family members moved to Jasper, Illinois. I think it is very
possible that Bessie was the daughter of a younger Dohm and was left to be
raised by Frank and Augusta. I have also studied the Rinebold history, which has
Bessie as the daughter of Augusta and Frank, but it is agreed that there isn't
any proof. The important point is that she was, no doubt, a Dohm and most likely
her mother left for Illinois with other family members, or more likely joined
them. It is stated that her mother went West. At that time Illinois would be
west. California may have been the wish, but they, apparently, settled for
Illinois.

Mrs.
Matilda J. Eberlin departed this life at her home at Norconk, Wilmot Township,
on Monday, May 14, 1900, Matilda Jane Eberlin, wife of the late Martin J.
Eberlin, who passed over into the great beyond May 1, 1899. The deceased was
aged 40 years, and was a victim of that dreaded disease consumption. She left
three children, an aged father and several brothers and hosts of friends to
mourn her death.
Interment
took place in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, which was in sight of her home,
on Thursday, May 17. The funeral was very largely attended. Twelve pallbearers
carried her last remains to her last resting place from her home, where she was
laid to rest by the side of her husband. She was a devoted and consistent member
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. John W. Klinger of Dushore, her pastor,
officiated and delivered an able and touching sermon.
The
deceased was born in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, in 1860, and was a
daughter of Hiram Kisner. She received the rite of holy baptism in her infancy
by the Rev. C.L. Early, and was confirmed according to the rites of the Lutheran
church in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, in 1872, by the Rev. Henry B.
Strodach, and was united in holy wedlock with Martin J. Eberlin in 1878, by the
Rev. Lewis Smith. The deceased was one of those rare personalities who seem to
diffuse about them a sort of love compelling atmosphere, which few can resist
that come within the charming circle of its influence.
" None
knew her but to love her.
None named
her but to praise"
Although
conscious of the approaching death, which was to sever the tenderest of human
ties and deprive her children of fond mother's love and guidance, she was
nevertheless enabled to meet death's merciless advance with marvelous fortitude
and resignation, testifying to the last her abiding faith in God's infinite
goodness and a Christian hope of a blissful immortality. The church of which she
was an exemplary member and the social circle enlivened by her presence lose
much by her untimely demise. To the bereaved family, which now only consists of
three children, the loss is an irreparable one. To this tearful group around the
desolate hearthstone of there once happy home, the sympathy of the entire
community have gone forth with a depth and sincerity seldom ever
witnessed.

This is a letter to Ernie Hatton from Carl

From: Robert C.[ Carlie]
Potter
January 18,
2002
Dear
Ernest,
Many years ago I believe I sent
your copies of the Civil War records I had acquired for George Gilbert Potter
who was my great-grandfather. Mertie Exley and my grandfather Jim Potter were
brother and sister. My father was Carl Potter who owned and operated the
Thunderbird Bar in Mildred. I was raised in Mildred, and as a kid knew Aunt
Mertie, Uncle Doll and Aunt Jenny. As I recall Jenny and her husband Frank
Kaminski moved to California in the mid-fifties they were elderly then. My
grandfather and Jenny were the youngest in their family. I also loved to go to
Albert Exley's farm, which was almost a zoo with the unusual animals and fowl he
had there. I also remember the Hatton family coming to church at Trinity when
you were in town. I can remember Gordie who was in the Navy probably in the
mid-fifties and a younger boy probably you [this was our younger brother Paul, I
was the oldest}. As a reference point I was born in 1942. I still maintain my
mother's house near Dushore and get to Sullivan County every few months. My
mother is a resident of Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella. My father died in 1983.
I have two sons who have two children each, one of them a boy who is the last
male Potter from Jim Potter's lineage. My brother has one daughter. Gordon Exley
and my father were first cousins, and from what I can determine from your
letter, Gordon was your grandfather. I can't add anything that you haven't
already hit on in your excellent section of the Sullivan County
website.
Best
regards,
Robert (Carlie)

New Albany man accused of
beating and kidnapping wife
By: The Review 08/26/2004
A New Albany man accused of
kidnapping and severely beating his pregnant wife was ordered incarcerated in
Bradford County Prison Wednesday in lieu of bail.
According to information filed
with District Justice Tim Clark, Johnny Lee Fassett, 32, has been charged with
aggravated assault, kidnapping, burglary, aggravated assault of an unborn child,
terroristic threats, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another
person.
State police reported being
contacted on Aug. 24 by Lee Fassett, Johnny Fassett's father, who reported that
his son had assaulted his wife. Responding to Memorial Hospital in Towanda,
state police said they spoke to Amy Fassett, who is Johnny Fassett's wife. Amy
Fassett said that she heard a loud bang around 1:40 a.m. that day, and Johnny
Fassett then entered her bedroom and repeatedly punched her in the face. State
police said Amy Fassett also told them her husband punched her at least three
times in the abdomen, while stating: "I hope you lose the
baby."
In addition, during a
re-interview, Amy Fassett told the state police that her husband had choked her
during the altercation until she was unable to
breath. Amy Fassett said she
attempted to call for help after Johnny Fassett left the room, but the phone was
dead. During that time, Amy Fassett said, her husband made numerous statements
that he was going to kill her as well as himself. She also told state police
that Johnny Fassett remarked that a protection from abuse order was just a piece
of paper, and that would not stop him from beating her.
Johnny Fassett stayed with her
for several hours, Amy Fassett explained, refusing to let her leave or to seek
medical attention, and threatening to kill her if she attempted to leave the
premises. Eventually, Amy Fassett said, Johnny Fassett agreed to take her to his
father's residence, where Lee Fassett called the
authorities.
Johnny Fassett was arrested
and arraigned before Judge Clark, who ordered the defendant incarcerated in lieu
of $125,000. Johnny Fassett's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept.

census.
Her full name is Maria
Eva Kochersperger. She came to America
with her
older brother, Johann Martin Kochersperger.
She was
born 28 July 1758 in Rittershoffen, Alsace, France and married William
Conrad in Philadelphia on 13th Feb 1788.
William
Conrad was a Hessian mercenary that deserted over to the side of the
American revolutionaries and fought on their
side. Their children
were John, Polly, Catharina,
George, William, Andrew and Jacob. Her brother, Johann
Martin Kochersperger was a farmer in Passyunk Township, Philadelphia
County. He died there in 1822.
He is the patriarch of the still existing,
very large
Kochersperger family from Philadelphia. All descendants still spell the surname
the exact way it was spelled back in
France.
The memorial stone or
tombstone was placed much later after
their
deaths, which accounts for the inconsistencies of the birth years. Her identity is
beyond doubt, as she was together with
her
brother Johann Martin whose identity is confirmed as well. This is a tombstone that was placed perhaps some 50-70
years ago, I can tell that by the style, decoration on the face, print style and
general condition/appearance. I would say 1950's-1970's. someone, possibly a
descendant, commissioned this stone, since there was apparently none over the
original grave. Obviously they have Maria Eva's birthdate wrong and I am not
sure that the death date is accurate, I have seen later dates as
well.
DG
I am adding another notation from
DG:
Maria Eva and her
brother Johann Martin were actually already 2nd cousins to Georg Jakob's father,
they are from the same family and descended from Hans Guggisberg, but
one group is from one of the latter's sons and the other from the second. They
go back 4 generations before they connect. Please check out DG's home page
for further details.
