The Sherman Family
From Pennsylvania to Michigan and Beyond

This article consists of material from Dave Kester, whose ancestors married into the Sherman family, and from Sue Edminster, whose husband is directly descended from Moses Benjamin Sherman. They can be reached at Dave Kester and Sue Edminster. The Sullivan County Settlers Web Page is grateful to Dave for his overall history of the Sherman family, as well as for many other contributions of content and commentary to this Page. We are especially appreciative of the family materials contributed by Sue for her own Sherman family branch, which relocated from Overton, just above the Sullivan County line to Michigan, and then later to Washington State. Moses Benjamin Sherman was actually born in Overton, where the Shermans intermarried with the Hunsingers, Rinebolds, Strebys and other families. We are also appreciative of the contributions of Sue Edminster, author of The Sherman Family Blog, initiated in 2011, to which you can refer for anecdotes and additional information on this marvelous family.
The latest update we have recieved for this page was contributed by Judy Franklin, daughter of Benjamin Franklin, Jr., granddaughter of Pauline Sherman Franklin and great-granddaughter of Jennie Sherman. Judy, who lives in Amherst, MA but visits family in Pennsylvania two or three times per year, stumbled on our page while researching her family history. She sent us several additional pieces of information in October 2014, for which we are grateful.

Historian's Preface:In the mid-to-late 1900s, many of the folks who were born in Sullivan County were no different from young people elsewhere in the eastern United States. As the forests and farm lands were worked out, many times to exhaustion, and particularly where large families limited opportunities for succession, theyoung and able saw the West as the "land of opportunity". Before the Civil War, the West might have been Illinois, Kansas or Missouri. You may recall that "Bloody Kansas" and the Bootheel region of Missouri were the informal battlefields for pro- and anti-slavery forces under John Brown and William Quantrell long before the guns sounded at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Gold Rush in 1849 made California an attractive option, but the lands in between Kansas and the West Coast were largely a foreign country for the white man. After the Civil War, however, and particulary with the defeat and marginalization of the Indian nations, the whole area from Minnesota and Michigan to the Rockies and beyond quickly became expansion territory. Historians such as Frederick Jackson Turner talked about the Manifest Destiny of the United States to settle and civilize interior North America. It was in this cultural context that young men such as Moses Benjamin Sherman left the comforts of home in Pennsylvania to make a living in Michigan. Much in the spirit of his grandfather, Jacob Sherman, who came to Sullivan County when that area was a wilderness, we can be confident that Moses held similar hopes and fears when he left for Michigan to make a life and a family.

Notes for Henry W. Sherman

Henry Sherman, a native of Mifflin, Pa., came to Overton from Columbia county in 1824. He made the journey on foot by the way of Kizers and Ellises with his wife, one child (George) and a sister, Beckie Sherman, afterwards Mrs. Daniel Garlough. He carried the gun and his wife the baby, and vice versa. Mr. Sherman had been induced to this locality by his father-in-law, George Hunsinger, who was living on Ringer Hill in Sullivan county. He took up his abode, for a time, with Daniel Heverly 2d, until he could prepare a home of his own. He "squatted" upon lands south of Overton village, and subsequently held 200 acres by "right of possession." He built a log house, like those of the pioneers generally, with a puncheon floor and bark roof, furnished with domestic articles of his own manufacture. This log cabin stood by a spring in Sullivan county, about twenty-five rods from Black creek. Mr. Sherman lived here about ten years, then built a second log house in the vale below Overton village, near the old road and about twenty-five rods from the creek. This building stood in Overton township.

Mr. Sherman brought in a cow and eight sheep, and the first night after moving into his new home saved the latter from destruction by wolves, only by a timely watch and protection. He began clearing his land covered with a dense forest of huge pines, hemlocks and other timbers, but being alone could not make very rapid progress. However, he managed to clear up about five acres a year, until his boys became large enough to help him accomplish more. After a few years' residence in the second log house, he built a third one on the main road between Overton and Forksville, about twenty-five rods from the creek. Mr. Sherman was a cooper by trade, and for several years supplied the wants of the people in the cooperage line. For a number of years he gave attention to the manufacture of lumber and kept a water mill in operation on Black creek. He also ran a distillery for a short time upon his place. He built a little shop near his house, and did some blacksmithing and horse-shoeing. Henry Sherman was of Pennsylvania'German parentage. He came to Overton when it was literally a wilderness, hoping to secure for himself and wife a home. His humble abode soon began to be blessed by the presence of "Little ones," and it was, indeed, with great effort that the wants of his family were met, lands cleared and a start made in life. After years of diligence, he was able to make a good living, and closed his days in plenty. He had a "weakness" in putting up and tearing down buildings, and will be remembered as "Overton's notable barn builder." In 1823 Mr. Sherman was united marriage with Catherine Hunsinger. They had seven children, as follows:

 :

George, married and lived in one of the other counties.

 :

Daniel, married Lorinda Larabee, removed West and served in the Civil War.

 :

Amos died in his young manhood, unmarried.

 :

Mary, married Charles Brown of Hillsgrove, Pa.

 :

Peter, married lst Phian Streevy, 2nd Elizabeth Hatch; died March 6, 1891, aged 58 years.

 :

Jacob, born November 2, 1834; married Hannah Musselman; died March 11, 1905.

 :

Mrs. Sherman died in 1834, and in 1836 Mr. Sherman married Elizabeth Thrash, who as "Betsy" Sherman will long be remembered as the good Samaritan, always ready and administering to the needs of the afflicted. She regarded it as a duty to visit and comfort the sick, and would leave her bed at any time of night to assist her neighbors. Mr. Sherman died May 14, 1878, aged 78 years, and his wife, Elizabeth, March 5, 1881, in her 63ed year. Unto Henry and Elizabeth Sherman were born:

 :

Catherine, married A. K. Woodley.

 :

Nelson, born October 12, 1838; married Margaret Rowe. (died May 24, 1912.)

 :

William, married Emily Molyneux.

 :

Loretta, married Augustus Bleiler.

 :

John, died unmarried in his 37th year.

 :

Moses, married and lives in Michigan. His family heritage is presented in some detail below.

 :

Caroline, married Albert Molyneux.

 :

Andrew, married Nettie Hottenstein.

 :

Ann, married and lives in the West.

 :

Edward, married Della Bahr.

 :

Seven other children died in infancy, thus Mr. Sherman was the father of twenty-three children, a record that has never been equaled by any other man in Overton.

 :

Henry Sherman was born at Mifflin, PA; he married Catharine Hunsinger, a daughter of George Hunsinger, of Cherry, in 1823. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman came from Columbia County to the Overton settlement in 1823, remaining with Daniel Heverly, 2nd, until Mr. Sherman built a house in Forks Township near the Overton township line, where he moved his family in 1824. Mr. Sherman contracted for two hundred acres of land, about half of which was located in Forks and the balance in Overton township, where the greater portion of the village of Overton is now located. Mr. Sherman built a new house across the line in Overton Township at a later date and moved into that township.

 :

Elizabeth Lord (Mrs. Joseph Rogers) taught in Henry Sherman's log house, which stood in the vale below Overton village, in the winter of 1835-'36. Of her experience as teacher in Overton, Mrs. Rogers says: "The house had two rooms, one was used as a cooper shop by Mr. Sherman and the other, the one in which the school was kept, was the kitchen, bedroom, etc. We kept warm with some difficulty, and went on with our work amid the confusion arising from the cooper shop. Mr. Sherman's children were without shoes, but they did not seem to mind the cold much. The branches that we gave attention to were spelling, reading, writing and some arithmetic. A gnose quill was used for a pen, and the children made their own ink by boiling up soft maple bar, and added a little alum or cooperas. The sums were general worked out upon a shingle. I boarded' round, and it was some time before I could get accustomed to the German habits and their sauer-kraut un spheck, etc. Alma Heverly spoke English and most generously bestowed her hospitality, and otherwise did her best to make it pleasant for me. I shall never forget her kindness."

 :

He was married twice, his first wife died in 1834 leaving seven children. In 1836 he married Elizabeth Thrasher of Cherry Township, who was the mother of seventeen children. Mr. Sherman's children by his first wife were: George; Daniel; Henry, deceased of Overton; Amos; Mary, married Charles Brown, of Forks; Peter, dec'd, of New Albany; Jacob, of Overton. By his second marriage: Catharine, dec'd, married A.K. Woodley, of Overton; Nelson, of Overton; William, dec'd, of Forks; Loretta married A.B. Bleiler, of Forks; John, deceased; Moses, of Michigan; Caroline, dec'd, married Albert Molyneux; Andrew, of Manchester, Va; Ann of Idaho; Edward of Canton, PA; seven children died in infancy.

Overton responded at the first call for volunteers, and Nelson Sherman, yet living, has the distinction of being the first man to enlist from the township. Jacob Hottenstein furnished four sons'George, John, Mandes and Solomon; Henry Sherman, four sons-Daniel (in western army), Henry, Jacob and Nelson; John Streevy, four sons-Alfred, Henry, William and Charles; Daniel O'Neill, three sons-John, Philip and William; Jonathan Camp, three sons-Henry, Levi and Reuben; while Brooks Epley sent his son, John, and went himself.

Sayre Man Served in Spanish American War
Pvt. Richard Sherman
A new exhibit at the Sayre Historical Society focuses on a Sayre man who served in the Philippines during the Spanish- American War.
Pvt. Richard Sherman of Sayre was a cook with Company L of the 42nd Regiment, United States Volunteer Infantry, according to a memorial obituary. Sherman, who died at the age of 86 on Jan. 20, 1961, was the father of Mrs. Charles (Orpha) Flick of Sayre. A number of interesting artifacts, including photographs, enlistment papers and a large wooden footlocker that belonged to Sherman, were recently loaned to the Sayre museum by Robert Flick of Sayre, a grandson of Sherman.
In the forward to a book on the history of the 42nd Regiment, Fred J. Herman, who was the regiment's quartermaster, tells of the difficult situations they experienced.
"The garrison and field duties of the 42nd Infantry were often arduous, hazardous and performed under difficulties, but never particularly spectacular," he wrote. "It entailed many hardships, and privations, in broiling sun and tropical rain, in mud and weary marches and discomfort to our soldiers who, however, performed their duties in a humane manner, were never oppressive and always considerate and helpful to the non-combatant native populations."
The Spanish American War of 1898 followed three years of fighting by Cuban nationalists against Spain. The mysterious sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898 propelled the United States into military conflict. The hostilities officially lasted four months. Most historians agree that the war ended Spain's colonial influence in the Western Hemisphere and established the United States as a Pacific and world power. As part of a postwar settlement, Spain ceded to the United States sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. At the same time, the U.S. annexed the independent state of Hawaii.
The 42nd Volunteers were organized, assembled and equipped in 1898 for overseas service in the Philippines, according to the company history. Enlistment papers for Sherman indicate he enlisted on Sept. 10, 1898, when he was 23 years old.
Sherman's brother, Joseph, also served in the Spanish-American War. He enlisted Sept. 9, 1899 in Wilkes-Barre. He was a private in Battery I, Sixth Regiment, Artillery, of the U.S. Army.
Richard Sherman was born on March 30, 1875, a son of Nelson Sherman of Overton, PA. He married Permilla Voight, and the couple had three children: Geraldine (Mrs. William Weaver), Wilbur and Orpha (Mrs. Charles Flick). Richard's siblings include Joseph, Katherine and Edward. According to "A Sherman Family History," the father, Nelson, was a private in the Sixth Pennsylvania Reserve during the Civil War, enlisting on April 22, 1861. He was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA. The family history account indicates he also fought at Antietam, the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of the Wilderness. Nelson was born Oct. 12, 1838 in Dublin, Ireland and died in 1912. He is buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Overton.
Along with the Spanish- American War items, a photocopy shows Richard Sherman, along with others, standing in front of the old Athens Motor Company Garage. The men are identified as Edward Sherman, proprietor, Claude Cole, Joe Camp and Victor Rogers. Outside the establishment is a Hudson Super Six automobile.
A pension certificate accompanying the documents outlines Sherman's pension of $6 per month starting Aug. 1, 1910 due to "malarial poisoning."
Sherman's regiment proudly served the country, according to the regiment history.
"The regiment carried no press agents or sensation mongers at home or abroad and left the Islands, its duties honorably performed and its conscience clear, its members re-absorbed by the American people, as better citizens," said the account.
A poem written by Miss Rosabella Roberts of Nelson, NY, reads in part:
"From the heart of old Niagara,
With their hopes, their prayers, and fears,
Are wherever fate or duty calls,
The 42nd Volunteers."

* Per her grandson, Michael Donald Vosburgh, an eight generation descendant of Moses Sherman, Dorothy made the "best cinnamon toast honey in the world". Michael wrote as follows to us on December 3, 2008:

I remember meeting my Great Grandpa Sherman when I was a little boy. My father's father was Robert E. Vosburgh and my Grandmother was Dorothy Sherman. I know more now after reading the fine work that has been done by Dave Kester, Susan Edminister and Bob Sweeney on the Sherman family than I have ever known. Such as where the “Donald” came from in our names--from my Great Grandpa Sherman, Donald Bain Sherman, my grandmother Dorothy (Sherman) Vosburgh's father. I only saw him once when I was probably 4 or 5 years old. A little hazy but I remember the big old black car he had. I knew where the "Robert" in my name came from but not the Donald. Somewhere along the line the family grew distant from each other. But I will see what I can scrounge up from my Mom. I think she may have some old pictures and probably has more definite information. But I can tell you a little about my family and myself for starters.
I wish I knew what it was that my Grandma did with that cinnamon honey butter that made it taste so GOOD but I don’t. I was still a little kid when I last had it, but it was one of the things I looked forward to when we went to Grandma’s house!! The last time we went there, in 1973, Robert and Dorothy Vosburgh were living in Rochester New York.
My brothers and sisters and I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan. We moved down to Texas in 1975, Detroit was going under then and my dad felt it would be a smart move to beat the crowd out of town. He died shortly after we arrived in Texas in a car accident. A couple years later, I enlisted and spent 14 years in the Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, VA Long Beach, CA, and San Diego. When I got out, my family and I moved to Austin, Texas. All the rest of my brothers and sisters and my Mom live in the Beaumont area in Texas. I’ve been working here in Newport, Indiana at a plant where we neutralized a stockpile of VX nerve agent for the last 5 years. My family and I now live in a little town called Paris, Illinois. We are in the closure phase of the plant now and I’ll probably be around here for another 18 months. Then I hope to go to either Blue Grass, Kentucky, another site where they will be getting rid of the stockpile of VX there, or Aiken, South Carolina, a nuclear waste project. But it is all uncertain at this point.
