Second Lt. Kenneth H. Dieffenbach, 30, Scranton marine pilot who survived 40 missions against the
Japanese in World War 2, was killed Wednesday with eight other marines when their plane crashed near Eastville, Va.
Lt. Dieffenbach was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Dieffenbach, 1326 Farr Street, Scranton. The marines were
aboard a two-engine transport en route from Cherry Point, N.C., to Floyd Bennett Field, N.Y. when it plummeted
to the earth during a heavy rain.
An eyewitness said the plane made two complete spins and then hit the ground with terrific force. Bits of wreckage
were scattered over a 300-yard area.
Lt. Dieffenbach enlisted in the marines in 1939. By the end of the war he was a captain. After the war, under
marine procedure, he was reduced to the permanent rank of master sergeant. Last year he was promoted to second
lieutenant.
He held the Air Medal and a Gold Star in lieu of the second Air Medal. The first medal was for successful bombing
attacks on Japanese shipping, airfields and troop positions. That was in 1943.
In the same year he won the Gold star “for consistently accurate dive bombing on troop concentration in the
face of heavy enemy fire.”
Lt. Dieffenbach was married to the former Miss Hazel L. Miller of Miami. They have two sons, Kenneth, Jr., 6 and
Edward, 3. The family resides at Cherry Point.
He is a grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Dieffenbach of Bernice.
Funeral was on Tuesday from the Comb’s Funeral Home in Miami, Florida.
