WILLIAM H. YONKIN
WILLIAM H. YONKIN (Henry, Henry Yonkin) born January 13, 1838; died September 14, 1915
Married HANNAH A. FAIRCHILD on June 30, 1869. She was born September 23, 1847; a daughter of Steven and Nancy Thomas Fairchild. She died Feb. 17, 1937
The Sullivan Review February 17, 1937
Mrs. Hannah A. Yonkin, widow of the late William H. Yonkin of Cherry Township, died Tuesday night at her home following a short illness.
Mrs. Yonkin was in her ninetieth year.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Herman Jacoby of Eldredsville and one son, Otis F. Yonkin, with whom she lived. Also two grandsons and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Yonkin was a daughter of the late Stephen and Nancy Thomas Fairchild, early settlers of Sullivan County, her
father coming to the county with his parents in 1819 from Morris County, N.J. Freeman and Hannah Ketchum Fairchild,
Mrs. Yonkin’s grandparents, settled in Cherry township on the farm now owned by Mrs. L.A. Hughes, and established
the first hotel, known as the Fairchild Tavern or the Hotel of Many Fireplaces. The building has fourteen fireplaces to furnish heat and comfort to their guests.
Mrs. Yonkin was born in Cherry Township, September 23, 1847, on what is still known as the Fairchild farm near the Horseshoe. On June 30, 1869, she married William H. Yonkin and settled on the farm where she has since lived.
For the past fifteen years she has been afflicted with a growth on her eyes from which
she has been totally blind for a number of years. Her son and his wife have faithfully cared for her during this affliction. Her mind has been clear and bright up to the time of her death, and it was a great pleasure and privilege to spend a few hours in her company and have her recall many of the happenings in this community during her long and eventful life. Her early education was secured in the public schools and she taught a local school for a few terms, attending the county institute and getting her provisional certificate.
Funeral services will be held from her late home on Saturday at 10:30 o’clock, with further service in Peace church at 11:00 o’clock. Burial in the family pot in Peace cemetery.

July 30, 1924
Bruce P.W. Jacoby died Friday night at 10 o’clock from injuries received a few hours
before, without regaining consciousness, at the age of 12 years.
He was helping his father make hay during the afternoon and about seven o’clock was
assisting in unloading a load of hay in a neighbor’s barn. Herman Jacoby the father of Bruce,
was pitching the hay from the wagon and Dewey Minnier, a neighbor, was standing in the
opening in the barn pitching the hay back into the mow.
Bruce was in the mow, carrying the hay to the back of the barn. The mow was small and when
the hay was nearly unloaded the two working in the barn were working close together. With
the last forkful, thrown back by Minnier, a tine of the fork caught Bruce just above the
left eye, penetrating the head.
Bruce in some manner had come up behind Minnier and was near enough to be caught by the fork.
Bruce called to him stating that he had been hurt; he then lapsed into a coma from which he
never rallied.
Dr. Dailey was summoned at once from Dushore, and after an examination gave first aid.
Later he was taken to his home about a half-mile distant where he died. The family, and
all who know, desire to state that death came from a purely accidental cause.
He is survived his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Jacoby, of Satterfield; one sister,
