The Sullivan Review March 9, 1911
Harry W. Hunsinger, foreman of carpenters for the Lehigh at Sayre, formerly of Dushore, was fatally injured, and
Dr. W.J. Higgins of Sayre was seriously hurt, in an accident on the Packer Avenue bridge in Sayre Monday morning at
10:30 o'clock.
The two men and a horse and wagon owned by Dr. Higgins went through an opening in the floor of the bridge, landing
on a boxcar and rolling from there to the ground, a distance of 35 feet.
Both men were taken to the Packer hospital where Mr. Hunsinger died at 11:10, forty minutes after the accident.
Dr. Higgins is in the hospital suffering from a fracture or dislocation of the right shoulder and a number of
minor bruises and cuts. Unless some serious internal injury develops it is likely that he will have a rapid recovery.
The horse, a high-spirited animal, was so badly injured that it was shot.
A gang of carpenters under supervision of Mr. Hunsinger was making repairs to the bridge and a section of the
planking on one side of the bridge had been removed for a distance of about 15 feet, leaving the planking adjoining
it for a driveway. The Lehigh workmen did not put up any barrier and Mr. Hunsinger decided that instead he would
lead teams around the opening. When Dr. Higgins reached the bridge, Mr. Hunsinger approached and grasped the horse's
bit. The animal reared and plunged and as it did so Mr. Hunsinger was swung over the opening and as he dropped
downward, he pulled the horse toward the hole. An instant later, the horse, the wagon and the two men were plunging
downward.
A boxcar stood under the opening and they struck on top of it and then bounded to the tracks below. The horse fell
directly on top of Hunsinger, while Dr. Higgins was thrown clear of the wreckage when he encountered the top of
the boxcar and landed several feet to one side. Those who ran to the rescue found that the physician’s face was
covered with dirt and blood and he was moaning with pain.
Underneath the horse and a shattered wagon was Mr. Hunsinger.
Dr. Higgins was first removed to the hospital and his condition appeared hopeful from the start, but Hunsinger had
no pulse and seemed to be oblivious to all that was taking place about him. The strongest of stimulants were
administered, he was given artificial respiration, but forty minutes from the time he fell he ceased breathing.
Harry Hunsinger
Harry W. Hunsinger, who lost his life in the accident, was born 36 years ago at Dushore, and resided here until
17 years ago when he went to Sayre. He was employed there for a time as a carpenter and in 1900 was transferred to
Towanda, where he was employed until six years ago, when he was transferred back to Sayre and appointed foreman
of carpenters. He was an honest, industrious man, who made friends readily, and to them and to his relatives his
death comes as a terrible blow.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Helen, aged 14 months, his mother, Mrs. Naomi J. Lewis, one brother, W
ard J. Hunsinger of Sayre, and one sister, Mrs. Harry L. Green of East Towanda.
Mr. Hunsinger was well known and highly regarded in Dushore and vicinity and his friends here extend
their sympathy to his family.
The funeral was held at his late home in Sayre at 2:30 o'clock this Wednesday afternoon with interment in
the Tioga Point cemetery .
