John Yonkin, 2nd was born in Cherry Township, September 26, 1820, and if he had only lived until that day of this month would have been 75 years of age.
His father was Henry Yonkin, a native of Havre, France, and his mother was Barbara Hartzig, a native of Switzerland. They came to what is now Sullivan County in 1824, and settled on a small farm, which was then a part of the great wilderness. Here his children were born as follows:

John, the subject of this sketch, Mary C, who married William Smith; Charles, living in Forks township; George W. residing in Dushore borough; Ellen, the wife of Henry Huffmaster; William H. a farmer of Cherry township; Jacob & Emily, died when children; Hannah married Fain Moyer, of Lycoming County; Elmira, is the wife of R.C.R. Kshinka; Peter J, a farmer of Cherry township and one of the commissioners of Sullivan County, and Edward, also a farmer in Cherry township.

John Yonkin was married in 1863 to Miss Loretta A. Barge and to them was born one son, Ira B. Yonkin, who for some time has operated the farm.
John Yonkin has for a generation been a man of prominence in Sullivan County, and besides filling many offices of trust in Cherry Township he was (in 1878) elected county commissioner and served three years.
In 1891 he was elected associate judge of Sullivan County and served five years.
In politics he was a staunch Democrat, and his unswerving loyalty to his party brought him the honorable recognition and responsible positions to which he was elected.
As a man he was eminently honest and upright, a firm and pleasant gentleman. He will be missed wherever he was known, and that was all over the county.
His funeral Sunday was very largely attended by friends and relatives.
