George W. Yonkin died Friday at his home on German Street after a long illness. Mr. Yonkin was born October 20, 1834. He was married in 1861 to Mary J. Sweeney, who was born in Count Clare, Ireland in 1844. His wife died several years ago. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Lloyd McCarty of Dushore, Addison and John Yonkin of Cherry Township, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; also two sisters Mrs. Phayon Moyer of Lycoming County, Mrs. Almira Kschinka and one brother, Edward Yonkin of Dushore.

Funeral Services were held at the Redeemer Reformed church at Dushore, Monday afternoon. Interment was in Peace Cemetery.

Mrs. Geo. Yonkin died at her home in Cherry Township on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 20 at the age of about 70 years. Pneumonia was the cause of death. The funeral services were held this Wednesday morning in St. Basil’s church with interment in the Catholic cemetery. She is survived by her husband and the following children; one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd McCarty of Dushore and two sons, Addison and John. Also two brothers and one sister; James Sweeney of Harrisburg, John Sweeney of Chicago and Mrs. Thomas Carmody of Murray.

Mrs. Emma McCarty, 94, passed away Monday at the Jennings Nursing Home in Towanda. She had been a patient there during the past year.

Mrs. McCarty was born on May 10, 1862, in Cherry Township, the daughter of George and Mary Sweeney Yonkin. She was a longtime member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and its Ladies Aid Society, for which she served terms as president and later as its treasurer.

In 1885 she was united in marriage to Lloyd L. McCarty of Eldredsville. They made their home in Dushore and were the parents of three sons, two of whom survived; Harland McCarty of Dushore, and LaRue McCarty of Bryn Mawr, Pa. two grandchildren and four great grandchildren survive, along with a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday morning form the Holcombe Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Schloyer officiating. Interment in the Fairview cemetery.

Raymond Wells McCarty died at his home, 6 The Circle, Hornell, N.Y. Thursday, March 5th , following an illness of five months at the age of 47 years.

Mr. McCarty was born in Cherry Township, June 6th, 1888, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd L. McCarty of German Street.

He received his early education in the public schools of Dushore, graduating with the class of 1905. After finishing school at this place he entered the Pealer Drug store as a clerk, remaining until 1907 when he entered the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Philadelphia, where he graduated with honors in 1910.

About twenty-five years ago he went to Hornell, where he was employed for some time as prescription clerk in the Young Pharmacy, which he later purchased and has continued the business. During his stay in Hornell he was earned the title of being classed with the foremost businessmen of the city.

Mr. McCarty was an active member of the Park Methodist Church, of Hornell.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Smith McCarty; one son, Willett McCarty of Hornell; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd L. McCarty of this place; two brothers, Harland A. McCarty, manager of the Pealer’s Drug Store, of this place and LaRue McCarty of Philadelphia.

The funeral was held from the home of his father-in-law, Willett Smith, 244 Main Street, Hornell. Rev Earl Burdick, pastor of the Park Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, Hornell.

Among those from out of the city who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd L. McCarty, Mr. and Mrs. Harland A. McCarty of this place and Larue McCarty of Philadelphia.

"This Column and employees of the Hornell office of the Gannett Newspapers today Join in paying tribute to a man whose death leaves a great void in the community-Raymond Wells McCarty - who would rather be called just "Ray McCarty."

"There were few like him, few who seemed to embody so many of the ideal characteristics of honesty, friendliness, high intelligence, simplicity, courage, honor and quick understanding of other men.

"We extend deepest sympathy to the members of Ray’s family and to that small army of friends he gathered on the way. We’re proud that we are one of that army."

LaRue McCarty died Thursday, May 27, 1966, at his home in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

He was born in Dushore, Sullivan County, the son of Lloyd and Emma Yonkin McCarty. He received his early education in the Dushore High School; and was graduated from Cornwall-on-the-Hudson Military College and Lock Haven State College.

He was principal of Monroeton High School and resigned to enlist in the U.S. Navy when World War I started. After the war, he accepted a position with the Atlantic Advertising Company for trade journals, his headquarters being in Philadelphia. He remained in this position until his retirement.

He is survived by his widow, Delphine; one daughter, Mrs. Albert Koch de Sherbinin; three grandchildren, all of Bryn Mawr; and a brother, Harland of Dushore.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 29, with burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Addison Yonkin of Center Street died Sunday, April 21st at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He had been in poor health for several years and was admitted at the hospital for treatment, Thursday.

Mr. Yonkin was born in Cherry Township, April 17th, 1864, a son of George W. and Mary Sweeney Yonkin. He received his early education at the Barth school in Cherry Township. He was united in marriage with Miss Bernice Zaner, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam H. Zaner, and after his marriage engaged in farming in Cherry township until a few years ago when he sold his farm to his son and moved to town.

Mr. Yonkin was an active member of the Reformed Church of the Redeemer of German street, serving as elder for many years.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Hoag; a son, Harry Yonkin; a sister, Mrs. Emma McCarty; two grandchildren, Helen Hoag and Bernice Yonkin.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Reformed church Rev. Clement B. Meyers, pastor, officiating.

Burial in Fairview cemetery; the funeral was very largely attended

Mrs. Bernice E. Yonkin, 88, widow of Addison Yonkin of this place, died early Tuesday morning in the Jennings Convalescent Home in Towanda.

Mrs. Yonkin was born in Sept. 19, 1866, a daughter of Adam and Fietta Wentzel Zaner. She was an active member of the Dushore Evangelical and Reformed Church of the Redeemer and its Women’s Guild

Surviving are one son, Harry Yonkin of Cherry Township; a daughter Mrs. Albert J. Hoag of this place; two grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Pond and Bernice Yonkin of this place; and a great granddaughter, Joan Marie Pond.

Funeral services were held at the Holcombe Funeral Home this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock with further services at the Church of the Redeemer at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Elden E. Ehrhart, Pastor, officiated. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Harry Yonkin, 86, of RD 2, Dushore, died October 23, 1979, at the Robert Packer Hospital.

Born in Cherry Township, he was a son of G. Addison and Bernice Zaner Yonkin. He was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County and was engaged in the farming industry his entire life. He was a member of Redeemer United Church of Christ, Dushore. He was director of Farmers and Mechanics Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Forksville.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Hieber Yonkin at home; one daughter Mrs. John (Bernice) Bushofsky, of Phoenix, AZ; one sister, Mrs. Albert (Ethel) Hoag of Dushore; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in Redeemer United Church of Christ, Dushore, with Rev. Robert Brown, the new pastor of the charge officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home Friday, Oct. 26, from 2-4 p.m. and after 7 p.m. and Saturday, at the church, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mrs. Carolyn L. Yonkin, 82, of Dushore, died Saturday, September 13, 1986, at home. Her husband, Harry C. Yonkin, died October 23, 1979.

Born in Cherry Twp., Sullivan County, April 22, 1904, she was a daughter of John B. and Mary Catherine Messersmith Hieber.

Mrs. Yonkin was a lifetime resident of Sullivan County and was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel. She also was a member of the church’s Dorcas Society and Altar Guild and had formerly taught Sunday school.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Bushofsky, of Phoenix, Ariz, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church in Dushore. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Dushore RD. The Rev. Richard A. Reeser, her pastor, will officiate.

Friends may call at McHenry’s 119 Carpenter Street, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at the church from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The family will provide the flowers.

Mrs. Ethel Hoag, 87, of Dushore, died April 4, 1985, at the Sullivan County Medical Center, Laporte, following an apparent heart attack.

She was born September 23, 1887 in Cherry Township, a daughter of G. Addison and Bernice Zaner Yonkin, and lived her entire life in Sullivan County.

Mrs. Hoag was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Dushore and its Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Sullivan County Senior Citizens Club.

She and her husband, Albert J. Hoag, whom she married September 27, 1920, would have celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary this year.

Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Pond; a granddaughter Miss Joan Pond and a grandson, Ronald F. Pond, all of Dushore.

Her only son, Raymond E. Hoag, was lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea during World War II.

Funeral services were held April 6, 1985, at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore, with Rev. Al Jayne, her pastor, officiating. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s UM Church Memorial Fund or the Sullivan county Public Library, Dushore.

John H. Yonkin died Friday January 14th, at the home of his son Arthur Yonkin of German Street, following a long illness.

He was born June 30th, 1866 in Cherry Township, a son of the late George W. and Mary Sweeney Yonkin.

Mr. Yonkin was united in marriage with Miss Agnes Litzelman, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Litzelman of Cherry Township, in 1892. Mrs. Yonkin passed away in 1901, leaving her husband and two sons.

Mr. Yonkin has been prominent in business activities in the county and for several years preceding his retirement from active work and foreman of construction work. For some time he has made his home with his son.

He is survived by two sons Arthur Yonkin of this place and Bernard Yonkin of Binghamton, his sister Mrs. Lloyd McCarty and a brother, Addison Yonkin, both of German Street; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday morning form the late home. Rev. Clement B. Meyers, pastor of the Reformed Church of the Redeemer, of German Street, officiated. Interment in the family plot in the Peace cemetery..

Mrs. John H. Yonkin of Lopez died August 20, aged 26 years. Funeral and interment at St. Basil’s in this place, August 22.

A husband and two children survive.

Deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Litzelman, of Cherry Township, and was very highly respected and well loved by those who knew her best.

Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved relatives. Death was caused by consumption.

Arthur W. Yonkin, 72, of Dushore died Wednesday morning at Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport. He had been in failing health for the past year.

He was a lifetime resident of the Dushore area. A son of the late John H. and Agnes Litzelman Yonkin, he was born December 4, 1893, in Cherry township, Sullivan County.

His wife, the late Mary McDonald, preceded him in death by approximately nine years

He was employed in the textile industries in Dushore and Towanda for most of his lifetime until he retired in 1960.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church, Dushore, and its Holy Name Society.

He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Ivan (Ann) Tourscher of Williamsport, Mrs. Patrick (Agnes) Hanley of Rutherford, N.J., Mrs. John (Betty) McMahon of Syracuse, N.Y., Miss Kathleen Yonkin at home, and Mrs. John (Clare) Quigg of Elkton, VA; two sons, John H. and Arthur A., both of Dushore; a brother, Bernard of Binghamton; 30 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore, with Requiem Mass at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore at 10 a.m. The Rev. Father Bernard Grogan will be celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Anne M. Tourscher, 73, of Williamsport, died Dec. 13, 1990, in Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport. She was the widow of Ivan F. Tourscher, who died in 1989.

She was born January 3, 1917, in Dushore, a daughter of Arthur and Mary McDonald Yonkin.

Mrs. Tourscher was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church of Williamsport and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Surviving are two sons, John, of Norristown, PA; and Robert, of Williamsport; two daughters, Mrs. Sara Green, of Charleston, WV; and Mrs. Donna Beck, of Sunbury, Pa; two brothers, Arthur W. Yonkin and John Yonkin, both of Dushore; two sisters, Miss Kay Yonkin, of Williamsport; and Mrs. Clair Quigg of Danville, Pa; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 17 at St. Boniface. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Maneval Funeral Home, Williamsport.

Agnes Yonkin Hanley, 66, of Rutherford, NJ, a native of Dushore, died Aug. 27, 1985, at Beth Israel Hospital, Passaic, NJ. She has been a resident of Rutherford for the past 25 years and retired in 1984 from Bell Telephone Co, Rutherford, where she had been a directory assistance operator for 14 years.

She was a daughter of Arthur W. and Mary McDonald Yonkin of Dushore and was a graduate of St. Basil’s High School.

Following high school, she was employed in Towanda as a beautician until her marriage.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Rutherford.

Surviving are her husband, Patrick V.; five sons, Patrick A. of Oakton, VA; Richard and James of Sorrento, FL; Michael of Central Point, OR; and Thomas of Rutherford; two daughters, Kathryn Vassi of East Rutherford, NJ, and Mary Cunningham of Carlstadt, NJ; four sisters, Ann Tourscher and Kathleen Yonkin, both of Williamsport; Claire Quigg of Matawan, NJ; and Betty McMahon of Maryland; and two brothers, John and Arthur both of Dushore.

Bernard J. Yonkin, 79, Binghamton, N.Y. died July 7, 1975, in Binghamton. Formerly of Dushore, he was a brother of the late Arthur W. Yonkin..

His wife, the former Barbara Farrell, preceded him in death, as did a son, Robert.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Marion R. Yonkin, and a granddaughter, Barbara; a grandson James; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was in St. Basil's Cemetery, Dushore.
