ELLEN C. YONKIN (Barbara, John Hartzig) born November 20, 1835, died February 23, 1906

Married HENRY HUFFMASTER on October 12, 1859. He was born November 16, 1838; died January 17, 1909. He was the son of Henry Huffmaster and grandson of Frederick Huffmaster, who were the original emigrant Huffmaster family to Sullivan County.

Mrs. Henry G. Huffmaster died at the family residence about a mile below town on Friday, February 23, aged 71 years, four months and three days.
The funeral services were held at Peace Church on Monday, February 26.
Deceased had been an invalid for many years before her death and had been a great sufferer from a complication of diseases. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia. She is survived by her husband and two sons.

Henry G. Huffmaster, a well known resident of Cherry Township, died Sunday morning at 8 o’clock, at the age of 70 years, 2 months and one day. Deceased was a son of Henry Huffmaster, who came to this country in 1801 with his father, Frederick Huffmaster.
The family located in the state of New Jersey, and late in 1820, when the Susquehanna and Tioga Turnpike was under construction, moved into this section and located on the farm occupied by the deceased.
Henry G. was a carpenter. He was married to Ellen Yonkin in 1859, who died a few years ago.
Mr. Huffmaster was a prominent Odd Fellow, being a member of the local lodge, and had served one term as county commissioner. He is survived by two sons, Edward and Rush.
The funeral has been delayed until Thursday on account of the time necessary for his brother Robert to reach here from his home in Kansas. Services will be held Thursday, meeting at his late home at 10 o’clock in the morning. Interment will be made at Peace Church cemetery.

Edward W. Huffmaster, died at his home in Cherry township, Thursday, December 29th, following an illness of pneumonia, at the age of 76 years 11 months and 20 days.
He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Huffmaster, early settlers of Cherry Township.
Mr. Huffmaster was a farmer and carpenter, a single man, and spent his entire life on the farm where he was born. For a number of years he held the office of assessor in Cherry Township.
He is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. John Lonser of Dearborn, Mich.; Arthur Huffmaster of Cherry township; Mrs. Herman Lonser, and Mrs. Ira Mangle of Pittston; Joseph and George Huffmaster of Detroit, Mich.; also an aunt, Mrs. R.C.R. Kschinka of this place.
Funeral services were held at his late home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. H.G. Deisher officiating. Interment in the family plot in Peace cemetery.

Rush Huffmaster, a highly respected resident of Cherry Township, died at 1:30 o’clock last Thursday morning at the Packer Hospital, Sayre. He was admitted to the hospital several days before and submitted to an operation for an ulcer of the stomach. He was convalescing from the operation when he was attacked by pneumonia which caused his death.

He was 42 years of age and is survived by his wife and six children. The body was brought to his late home Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held Monday at Peace Church with interment in the Germany cemetery.

Mrs. John Lonser, 7848 Coleman Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan, the former Abbie Agnes Huffmaster, eldest daughter of the late Rush Huffmaster and Mrs. Minnie Yonkin, passed away on Sunday, October 28th, at her home of a heart ailment. Mrs. Lonser has been ailing for some time, but her condition wasn’t believed serious until a few weeks ago, when the family sent for her mother and two sisters who were at her bedside when she passed away.

She was born in Dushore 52 years ago and attended the rural schools. She is survived by her husband, John Lonser and four children, Ethel Mae, Pvt. Donald Lonser with the U. S. Marines in China, Marie and Jean Lonser, her mother Mrs. Otis Yonkin of Dushore, and the following brothers and sisters, Arthur, Joseph and George Huffmaster of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Eleanor Lonser and Mrs. Ethel Mangle of Pittston, a half brother Corporal Paul Yonkin who was killed on June 9, 1944 in the invasion of Normandy; another half brother, Donald A. Yonkin who was recently discharged from the service after spending 2 years in Italy. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral was held on her 22nd wedding anniversary, October 31st with services in the Lutheran Church of Atonement. Burial in Grand Lawn Cemetery, Detroit.

John Lonser son of the late August and Freda Lonser, former resident of Mildred, passed away very suddenly at his home 7848 Coleman Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan on Friday October 4th at the age of 54 years.

He was married to the late Abbie Agnes Huffmaster who preceded him in death 11 months ago.

A veteran of World War I. He made his home in Sugar Hill until he came back from overseas. After securing employment in Detroit with Ford Motor Co., he made his home there. His mother Mrs. Freda Lonser died 6 months ago.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Kathleen Lonser, he is survived by the following children. Mrs. Sylvester Paruski, Donald and Jean of Dearborn, Mich. and Marie of Pittston. The following brothers and sister also survive: Herman A. Lonser of Pittston, Fred Lonser and Mrs. Alma Krause of Philadelphia, Carl and Edward Lonser of Detroit, Mich. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Arthur Huffmaster, 86, of Dearborn, MI, died July 30, 1981. He was born in Dushore May 20, 1895, a son of Rush and Minnie Huffmaster. He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church in Dearborn.

Mrs. Inez M. Huffmaster, formerly of Dushore, died at her home in Dearborn, Mich. Wednesday, August 4, 1965.
She was born at Sugar Hill, Pa., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Herker.
Surviving are her husband Arthur; two sons, Ernest Huffmaster and Francis Fox; a daughter, Mrs. Marie Melvin; a brother, Philip Herker; sisters, Mrs. Margaret Spitko of Newington, Conn., Mrs. Clara Hoffa of Athens, Pa, Mrs. Elsie McLarnen of Philadelphia and Mrs. Minnie Mosier of Geneva, N.Y. four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Eleanor Mary Lonser, 76, of Dushore, R.D., died October 8, 1973.

Mrs. Lonser was born in Dushore, June 28, 1897, daughter of Rush and Minnie Vail Huffmaster. She moved to Pittston in 1917 and lived there until Mr. Lonser retired in 1963, when she and her husband returned to Dushore.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hughstown, of the Mary Tierney Lodge Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen in Pittston and the Senior Citizens of Dushore.

Surviving are her husband, Herman; two daughters, Mrs. Grace Hogan of Pittston and Mrs. Pauline Richley of Dushore; four brothers, Arthur Huffmaster of Detroit, Mich.; Joseph of Dearborn, Mich.; George of Dearborn, Mich.; and Donald Yonkin of Arizona; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Mangle of Pittston; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. from the Howell Funeral Home, 5009 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston, followed by services at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Hughstown, at 11 o’clock.

Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Harding.

Pauline F. Richley, 74, of Dushore RD, died August 16, 1993, at her home. She was born July 28, 1919, in Pittston, a daughter of Herman and Eleanor Huffmaster Lonser. She spent most of her lifetime in Sullivan County.
She was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel, Dushore, and a former member of its Dorcas Society. She was a member of the Loyalsock Post 996 American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph J. Richley, to whom she was married 54 years last April; two sons, Charles of Westerville, OH; and Joseph Jr., of Dushore; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Joyce) Keeler of Montoursville; and Mrs. Guy (Linda) McCarty of Dushore; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A son Thomas, and a daughter, Eleanor, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held today, August 19, at 11 a.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore, with Rev. Steven Edmiston officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery.

Thomas J. (Coon Man) Richley, 40, of Dushore, died Oct. 12, 1992, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following an apparent heart attack. He was born Aug. 16, 1952, in Wilkes-Barre, a son of Joseph J. and Pauline Lonser Richley, of Dushore.
He was a 1970 graduate of Sullivan County High School and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Mr. Richley was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and he retired in 1991 after 20 years of services.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League of Towanda; Loyalsock post 996, American Legion, Dushore; and was Chief Steward for the Sullivan County AFSCME (State employees) Union.
Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Charles of Columbus, OH; and Joseph, Jr. of Dushore; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Joyce) Keeler of Montoursville; and Mrs. Guy (Linda) McCarty of Dushore; nieces and nephews. A sister, Eleanor Murberger, died in 1984.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore, with Very Rev. Patrick J. McLaughlin, V.F. officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery.

Ethel C. Mangle, 99, of Pittston, died January 1, 2002, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She was born in Dushore June 15, 1902, a daughter of Rush and Minnie Vail Huffmaster.
She attended Dushore High School and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Pittston. She was the widow of Ira Mangle who died in 1990
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Mangle of Allentown; a daughter, Mary Agnes Mangle of Pittston; a brother, Donald Yonkin of Fort Apache, AZ; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise, and brothers Arthur, Joseph, and George Huffmaster, and Paul Yonkin; and by sisters Abbie and Eleanor Lonser.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, at 11 a.m. at the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, West Pittston, with Rev. Russell Kerns presiding. Burial will be in Mountain View Burial Park, Harding.

Joseph L. Huffmaster, 85, of South Lyon, MI, died May 16, 1989. He was born in Dushore, December 3, 1903, a son of Rush and Minnie Vail Huffmaster.
His wife, the former Mabel Sarnosky, died in 1975. They were married May 22, 1925.
Mr. Huffmaster had been employed as a builder. He retired in 1969. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, of Hamburg, MI.
Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Marion Cullen of South Lyon and Mrs. Paul (Madeline) Sorenson of Sebewaing, MI; sons, Joseph, Jr., of Marquette, MI; Richard of South Lyon; and 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Ira (Ethel) Mangle of Pittston, Pa.; brothers, George of Canton, MI; and Donald Yonkin, of Apache Junction, AZ; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in South Lyon with Rev. Carl Wilson officiating. Burial was in South Lyon Cemetery.

Mrs. Mable A. Huffmaster, South Lyon, Mich., died Feb. 25, 1975. She was born April 4, 1910, at Mildred, a daugher of Fred and Pauline Lonser Sarnosky.
Mrs. Huffmaster and her husband, Joseph, (who was born and raised in Dushore) would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this month. A member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hamburg, Mich., Mrs. Huffmaster is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Marion Collins and Mrs. Madeline Sorenson; two sons, Joseph Jr., and Richard; a brother, William Sarnosky of Massachusetts; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

    The picture shows children of the Huffmaster, Yonkin and Richley families that were interwoven by marriage

Originally submitted to the Review by Ralph Yonkin (1903-1971), grandson of Jacob and Elizabeth (Moyer) Yonkin and son of George and Mary (Thrasher) Yonkin. The picture was taken by the teacher at that time, Helen Thall. Edward Huffmaster, whose barn lay across the road from the school, was in turn the son of Henry G. Huffmaster and Ellen Yonkin, whose father Henry Yonkin was a brother of Jacob Yonkin. Edward's nephew, George Huffmaster (1910-1994), is pictured in the photo as well. So, Ralph Yonkin and George Huffmaster were second cousins, once removed. Readers are invited to clarify the relationships with the other Yonkin and Richley chidlren pictured.
