Settlers XXVIII: Descendants of Henry Myers and Anna Margaretha Enderson
The Myers Legacy

We are indebted to Timothy Myers for this encyclopedic historical presentation of the heritage of the Myers family that came to Sullivan County in the nineteenth century. For a full review of all the ancestral families related to the Myers genealogy, please consult The Myers Family With Some Related Lines. In early 2002, Timothy dropped a note to the Sullivan County Genealogical Web project that sets the context for the history we are about to read:

Bob, here are several genealogy reports for ancestors of mine. My Myers ancestors lived in Cherry Township for some time, about 1855-1864 and then again 1880-1882 or so. My grandfather Myers was born in Eldredsville in 1903, too. After her first husband died, my great grandmother, Lucy Sturdevant, married Peter N. Myers. She had bought a home on the northwest corner of the John Bryant Land Warrant, along the border of the land of a farmer named Lemon Yaw. That land was eventually transferred into both of their names--Peter and Lucy. I have recently located this old farm which is in disrepair, but I did get photos of the old house which is barely still standing. They had left Sullivan County for Bradford County for good by 1913, but I hope you will find this information of value.

Thanks
Timothy Myers

At the end of the eighteenth century, numerous families were migrating from Sussex, Warren and Hunterdon counties in New Jersey to the Bradford and Sullivan county areas of Pennsylvania. Among these were the Kishbaugh and Myers families. Timothy Myers' introduction led me to read the family history and begin to understand their story. It is also a history of itinerant lumbermen and their families, and the culture of northern Pennsylvania between 1850 and 1930. This culture entails much more than just a genealogy of farmers, merchants and lumbermen. We learn about a peculiar game called "crokinole" that became such a craze that a furniture store in Leraysville shipped game boards by the dozens to buyers in rural Pennsylvania. We also learn about a wife and mother who took time to write exotic music for the tango! These are just examples of the ideas and anecdotes afloat in this marvelous story.

In this respect, there is no more fitting tribute to the Myers ancestry nor to the efforts undertaken by Timothy on behalf of recovering this history than his own words upon encountering the graves of his ancestors:

On April 20, 2000 as I stood with my Dad, Victor Roy Myers, at the Old Sturdevant Cemetery in Black Walnut, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, I had these thoughts:

Thinking of the faces of generations,
they seemed to whisper
to us
as we stood there
in that place
and their whispers
were carried by the trees
and pushed by the limbs
down to us
on the breeze
and we heard them!

In 2005, Timothy finally published his encyclopedic The Myers Family History (Watervliet, NY: Myers Publishing Company). Additional detailed information on the Myers and related families is presented in this book. The Sullivan County Genealogical Web Project is grateful to Timothy Myers for his research in this regard and will purchase and contribute a copy of this history directly to the Sullivan County Historical Society in Laporte, Sullivan County, PA.

Generation No. 1

HENRY MYERS was born in 1756 in Bucks county, PA, and died after 1837 in Roaring Creek, Columbia county, PA. This was the year in which he applied for a Revolutionary War pension. This request was denied; fifty years after the event, he had thrown away his discharge papers and could not prove at least six months of military service. He married ANNA MARGARETHA ENDERSON August 7, 1777 in ZIon Lutheran Church, Oldwick, Lebanon, Hunterndon County, New Jersey.

Notes for HEINRICH MAYER (MYERS):

The newly discovered (December 30, 2002) information on Henry proves what has been suspected for some time, that some of the earliest genealogy records prepared by a distant relative who was a National DAR Chairwoman were not accurate. Henry did not come from Schuylkill County and his ancestors probably were not of the New Netherlands De Meyert family.

While looking through the Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files (Volume II: F-M by Virgil D. White, 1991), Tim Myers found a two line listing for Henry Myers who had served on the NJ Line during the Revolution. Someone from Columbia County, Pennsylvania had applied for a Soldier's Pension on August 23, 1837. The listing stated that the soldier was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and lived in Hunterdon County, New Jersey until moving to Columbia County, Pa in 1805. Says Tim, "a light bulb went off in my head and I began to look for any supporting information. I discovered some records in the New York Genealogical Magazine of the Zion Lutheran Church, Oldwick, Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Published in various issues over several years time were various records, including a marriage record of Henry and Margaret Enderson, and several birth/baptism records. Awesome!!! I then made a trip to the National Archives in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and found the Pension file for Henry on film (see photos below). I was shocked to see that he applied for the pension in 1837 himself when he was 82 years old. The depostion he gave proves very insightful as well. The Court of Common Pleas, where his petition was heard, held that Henry had been a soldier in the New Jersey Miltia and as a substitute, but since he did not have his old discharge papers he could not prove at least six months service. It looks like he actually served for many more than six months. These documents are very interesting reading. Henry first stated that he was drafted for six weeks in the fall of 1777 into the militia and was quartered at Cramer Ferry. He then volunteered for the last two months of 1777 and was stationed at Sommersett (sp) near General Dickinson's headquarters. Henry also stated that in the winter of 1778 he served as a substitute in the same Militia in a company commanded by Capt. William Hazlett for one month at Bond Brook, Somerset County, NJ. In the spring of 1778, he again volunteered in the Company commanded by Captain Jacob Anderson for two months and was also stationed at Bond Brook, Sommersett County under Major Abraham Bunnel. Henry next was placed by Jacob Fash (sp), an agent of Congress, to work in the Mount Hope furnace in New Jersey, casting balls for the use of the army. Henry worked in this furnace for two years. Henry stated that his offcers during the time he served were: Colonel Abraham Bunnel, Major Rhinehart, Captain William Hazlett, Captain Jacob Anderson and General Dickinson. He was stationed part of the time near where General Dickinson lived. He stated that the English were at New Brunswick while he was at Bond Brook and that he never did get involved in a battle."

Generation No. 2

2. DANIEL MYERS (HENRY MYERS) was born September 6, 1791 in Spruce Run, Lebanon, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and died about August 1825 in Mifflinville, Mifflin Twp. Columbia, Pennsylvania. He married MARY SUSANNA PAYNE in 1817, daughter of JACOB PAYNE and RACHAEL _________. She was born April 1799, and died June 10, 1868 in Nescopeck, Columbia, Pennsylvania.

Notes from Timothy Myers, our contributor, for DANIEL MYERS:

In June, 2000 my Dad, Victor R. Myers, and I went to the Columbia County Historical Society in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. We also went to Mifflinville and Briggsville/Nescopeck to visit the Mt Zion Union Church and Cemetery. All of the Luzerne County and Bradford County Histories from the 1870's - 1890's have biographical information on the family of Peter Myers, John P. Myers' brother and Daniel Myers' son. In these histories, there are statements taken at a time when the people who would know were still living, that Daniel Myers died and was buried in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, PA. There are only three Cemeteries in Mifflin Township. The Brown Cemetery (likely the old Mifflinville Cemetery), the Creasey Family Cemetery. and the Mt Zion Church Cemetery (which is in Bridgeville, Nescopeck, not Mifflin Township). The Creasey family Cemetery has almost exclusively members of that family. The Mt Zion Cemetery is well documented (and not as old as the Brown Cemetery). The so called Brown Cemetery is by far the oldest cemetery, with several Revolutionary War soldiers buried there. It has numerous field stone markers and many missing markers. As one goes toward the back of the cemetery the stones seem to get earlier. There is a field stone in the very southwestern corner with the name worn off (if it was ever there) but with the clearly chiseled date " 11 8 182_ ". At one time, I thought this could very well be a likely date when Daniel died (11th August, 1825? - at least it gives me hope!!!)). A distant cousin, Hope Ziegler, argues that family tradition held that Daniel was buried in the Nescopeck Cemetery [which I have learned is what Mt. Zion Cemetery was called for a time], and told of visiting his grave on Memorial Day. Mary Susanna Myers re-married to Jacob Hinkle, and they had Elizabeth Margaret on December 11, 1829, just two years later.

However, much of this speculation turned out to be off the target. I eventually discovered Daniel's grave in the Old Mifflinville Cemetery which is right in Mifflinville.

Henry Myers' deposition for his Revolutionary War Soldiers Pension application states that he was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and went to Hunterdon County, New Jersey, to Lebanon Township some time after and that he subsequently went to Columbia County, Pennsylvania in 1805. The 1810 US Census has Henry Moyer in Northumberland County, at Mifflin/Catawissa Twp. again with the correct number of children.

Daniel Mayers is listed on the 1811 Mifflin Township annual taxable List, he would have been 20 years old.

Daniel Neyer is listed under the "N's" in the 1816 Annual Taxable, Catawissa Township, list with " 60 acres , 0 horses, 4 cattle, real $143, personal $20, occupation farmer.

Daniel Myers is listed in the 1821 Annual Taxable list as no acreage, 2 horses, 1 cattle.

Daniel Myers is listed in the 1822 Annual Taxable with 50 acres, 1 horses, 1 cattle.

_____ Mayer (Mayen) is listed in the 1824 Annual Taxable with 50 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cattle.

Daniel (F. or T.) Moyers or Myers is listed on the 1825 Annual Taxable with 50 acres (crossed out), 2 horses, 2 cattle.

Daniel Moyens or Myers in the Triennial Taxable list of 1826 is shown on lands of (J. Creasy?) with the notation "dead, to be charged to A. Ludwig' 1 horse, 2 cattle - farmer. It is not currently known why he is not listed on the taxable lists of the missing years.

There are references to the fact that Daniel died after being struck by lightening during a thunderstorm while out in one of the fields. Mr. Harding's notes (see below) mention this, as does family tradition. It is presumed that he died in late summer. As was the case in those times, Mary Susanna re-married fairly quickly. She had four small children to support. The family stayed in the Mifflinville area for many years, or migrated north into Sullivan and Bradford Counties and then returned to this area later in life.

Winifred Myers Love also stated that Daniel served in the War of 1812. She has him listed on Page 31 of the Muster Roll of Pennsylvania as a Private serving under Captain John Beuhlerm, 3rd regiment, 1st Brigade under Colonel Lafener; serving October 24, 1814 to December 5, 1814. He was 23 years old at the time. This Danile Myers lived to 1852 so it cannot be ours. Most of the rest of the information from Winifred for Henry and preceding persons is not correct!

A lot of the tax records come from Mary Kishbaugh Hunsinger via 1970's notes from a Mr. Harding (he researched for Mildred Davis Myers of Moravia, NY) and from Winifred Myers Love through Hope Zeigler. During my last trip to Pennsylvania during August 2002, I researched and made copies of all of the taxable records for myself and verified this information as correct.

Notes from Timothy Myers for MARY SUSANNA PAYNE:

Mary Susanna Payne had a very tough time of it, so it seems. After she married Daniel Myers, they quickly had four children from 1818 to 1825 when Daniel suddenly died. It is assumed that she lived with and cared for the children by herself for about three years. At that time, she married Jacob Hinkle and they moved to New Albany, Albany Township, Bradford County, PA, where they appeared on the 1830 US Census. They would have taken the Berwick Turnpike North to Lycoming (later Sullivan) County, to Cherry Twp and then taken the turnpike east to New Albany. The Berwick Turnpike, which was built from 1818-1822, replaced the earlier Susquehanna-Tioga Turnpike, which was finished in 1810. A search of the taxables for Albany Township did not establish what year they moved to the area from Columbia County nor what year Jacob died. Jacob Hinkle's family appears on the Albany Township, Bradford County, PA 1830 US Census. Mary Susanna's family seems to have moved back and forth over the Berwick Turnpike to Columbia County and Luzerne County (across the river) and back to Sullivan County until Peter Nathaniel Myers married Lucy Lee. Then they stayed for some years before moving to New Albany and other parts of Bradford County. Her son Peter went north for some years before going back south to Nescopeck until 1893 when he moved north to the Tioga/Sullivan/Bradford region for the last time. In any case, Mary Susanna (she seemed to prefer "Susanna" to "Mary" for some years] at some point ended up in Dushore, Cherry Township, then Lycoming County. A search of the Lycoming County taxables cannot help establish a time frame for this relocation because the county incredibly destroyed all of the early tax records. The archives in Harrisburg need to be searched for this information. Did she move to Lycoming/Sullivan County with Jacob Hinkle and then he died, or did she move there with the children after he died?

The Susanna Hinkle family appears in the 1840 US Census, on the second Cherry Twp. page for Sullivan County. She had one daughter between 5 and 10 years old, Elizabeth Hinkle; an unknown female between 20 and 30, and herself at 40-50. The family included 3 males between 15 and 20, John P., George Y., and Peter Myers, and one under 5 years old, Philip Hinkle. It would be logical that she was already living there with Jacob Hinkle at the time of his death. John Mosier, whose daughter her son Peter would marry in 1848, is on the same page of the US Census. He was one of the founders of Dushore, so it seems likely that they also lived in Dushore.

Mary Susanna married Thomas Kennedy sometime prior to 1850 and after 1840. They appear together on the 1850 US Census, Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania and again on the 1860 US Census but with a change. By 1860, they had adopted Emily S. Myers who was 4 years old. Mary Susanna was keeping house and sons George Y. Myers, a tailor, and Philip Hinkle lived with them. They were living next door to the family of another son, John P. Myers, probably in the Dushore area of Cherry Township. On April 19, 1859 Mary Susanna Kennedy had the sad task of applying for Letters of Administration for the estate of her son George Y. Myers. She paid a bond of $600 and was granted the right of Administration on May 2, 1859.

More About MARY SUSANNA PAYNE:

Burial: 1868, Mt Zion Cemetery, Briggsville, Nescopeck, Luzerne Co., PA

Children of DANIEL MYERS and MARY PAYNE were:

i. LAVINA MYERS, b. August 20, 1818, Mifflinville, Mifflin Township, Columbia Co., PA; d. August 29, 1899, Nescopeck, Luzerne, PA
ii. GEORGE Y. MYERS, b. June 04, 1821, Mifflinville, Mifflin Township, Columbia Co., PA; d. Bef. April 15, 1859, Dushore, Cherry, Sullivan Co., PA

Notes from Timothy Myers for GEORGE Y. MYERS:

In August 2002 during my trip to Pennsylvania, I discovered that the Sullivan County Courthouse had the taxable/assessment books for Cherry Township back to 1849. Those prior to 1854 were in a large safe/cabinet in the back room because the condition was poor. Anyway. I discovered in them that George Mayer (Moyer) is listed as a single freeman with personal property valued at $25. He is shown on the 1850, 1851, and 1852 list as owning a lot worth $25 and total taxables of $100. The added item of value in 1852 is one horse valued at $10. The 1855 taxable list for Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania lists George as owning one house and lot and also as a cripple! This fact is confirmed by some notes of Winifred Myers Love from one of her Uncles who stated that he respected him greatly because he was crippled and still tried to work. The 1859 taxable'assessment list has him wih 2 lots with a $40 total value. He died soon after the assessment was taken. There is a deed recorded on January 13, 1858 for a lot and house in the Township of Cherry "situate on the south side of Little Loyal Sock creek opposite Dushore in the Township of Cherry...being lot no. 4.....No. 5&6.." from Wells Wilcox and Harriet Wilcox to George Y. Myers and Philip R. Hinkle. These are the same lots given in full by assignment to George Myers from Philip R. Hinkle on January 18, 1858." Philip R. Hinkle was 1/2 brother to George, John and Peter, being a son of their mother by her second husband Jacob Hinkle. Much of the rest of the Hinkle family migrated northward as well. Philip's sister Elizabeth Margaret was the grandmother of Harold "Red" Grange.

At some point prior to 1830, John Peter Myers moved to Albany Twp, Bradford County, PA with his mother and stepfather Jacob Hinkle and the rest of the family. They then migrated southwest about 15-20 miles to Dushore, Cherry Twp. after Jacob's death and they were in the Dushore area by the time the 1840 Census was taken. John Myers may have been married first to Catherine as he is shown on page 696 of the 1850 US Census Cherry Twp, Sullivan County, Pa with her, and her last name is listed as Myers. They are listed as family number 241 but there are also three small Rollins children who are all under 9 years old and one named Barbary Ann Smitten who was 10 years old. These children could not have been hers. Possibly they are all siblings and a cousin of Catherine. There are other Rollins families in the census as well. John's wives, Nancy and Catherine, could not be the same women, as Catherine would have been shown as 1 year older than John on the Census. This is the difference that was on all of the later census records which John and Nancy appeared on together. The fact that John is shown as 27 on September 17, 1850, when the US Census was recorded for John and Catherine, helps narrow his birth date as after September in 1822.

In any case, John and Nancy Myers were married sometime prior to or during 1851 because their daughter Sarah was born in 1852. He was 30 years old at the time of Sarah's birth and it makes sense that he would have been married before that age. They would have established themselves by that time in Sullivan County, although not as property owners. His wife's maiden name was Nancy Winslow--the surname came from the death certificate of her stepdaughter Mary S. (Myers) Bartley in California (information obtained from Shirley Yarber).

John Myers is listed on the recently discovered 1849 taxable/assessment books for Cherry Twp, Sullivan County, Pa. as no longer living with his mother and as having taxable property of one cow worth $10, and, in 1850, one cow worth $12. The 1851 and 1852 taxables lists have John Meyer(s) with one cow worth $10. The 1849 assessment list gives credance to the belief that he may have been married, since he had his own household and was taxed separately. John Myers is listed in the 1854 taxable for Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA as having one cow worth $10.50 and as being in the Militia. He is also listed in the 1857 taxable list as having one cow worth $10.00. In 1861 he is shown with two cows for a total $20 assessment. This remains the same for most of the years through 1864. John P. and Nancy Myers were listed in the 1860 Census as living in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. Sometime between 1860 and 1870, they moved back to Nescopeck, PA, probably as early as 1861 or 1862 since family tradition holds that son, Peter Nathaniel Myers, was born in Berwick, directly across the Susquehanna River from Nescopek. In 1870 they were living in the Nescopeck Post Office area, Nescopeck, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. John is shown as a teamster and Nancy as keeping house. On this census, son Peter N. Myers was listed as 8 years old (his gravestone lists his birth date as 1860, but we now know it was 1862). I have recently discovered an old map of Nescopeck Village from the 1870's which has a lot with the name John Myers on it; they were living on Turnpike St. just East of Broad St.

Sometime before 1880 the family moved back to Sullivan County because John P. Myers is shown in the 1880 Census as being in the Township of Forks Drop, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania and as a 58 year old laborer. His wife Nancy was listed as a 59 year old house keeper. The only child still living at home was Peter N. Myers, age 19, who was also a laborer. I find no listing after 1882 for John P. Myers in the Cherry Township, Sullivan County taxables and the 1882 listing has his name crossed out after it was written. The tax records for Columbia County and for Luzerne County will have to be checked for further information. Forksville is within 5 or 6 miles of where Peter was living when my Grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt Myers, was born in Eldredsville, 1903.

POSTSCRIPT

Just a note to let you know I spent several days in, Columbia, Lycoming and Sullivan County a few weeks ago. I have a copy of a US Census page from 1840 showing Susanna Hinkle (my third great grandmother) living in Cherry Township already. They were there in 1850--Susanna with her new husband Thomas Kennedy, as well as her children John, Peter and George Myers. The annual tax assesment records from 1849 onward are at the Sullivan County Courthouse in Laporte, PA. They are all there each year until 1870 when they went to Nescopeck in Luzerne County (near Bloomsburg). So the deed with George Myers and Philip Hinkle is NOT the first entry of the Myers into Sullivan County, It was about 20 years earlier. I have photo copies of all of these tax records.

One thing that really ticks me off is that Lycoming County 'threw' all of the old records out!!!!!! Some they gave to the Historical Society. I could not find taxables before 1861 for Lycoming County. Sullivan County broke off in 1847. Who knows where they are! In contrast, Columbia County has them all on microfilm back to the 1790's.

Generation No. 3

28. LAVINA MYERS married JACOB KISHBAUGH, son of WILHELM KISHPAUGH and MARY HENRY. He was born May 12, 1814, and died June 16, 1873.

Notes from Timothy Myers for LAVINA MYERS:

Lavina was 81 years 9 days old when she died in Nescopeck in 1899. She was a member of the Mt Zion Church at Nescopeck Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania from at least 1860 when Church Records under the the Pastorate of Reuben S. Wagoner mention Lavina and her Husband Jacob Kishbaugh; through several other pastors until her death in August of 1899. She and her husband are mentioned repeatedly as Communicants on different days. Many of her children and grandchildren were baptized, confirmed and were communicants of the church. She was living with her son Tobias in 1880, according to the Census.

The following is a short history of the Mt. Zion Church

Mt. Zion is located about four miles southeast of the town of Nescopeck on the old turnpike. It was originally called the Nescopeck church. Though the church is in Nescopeck Township, at times it was reported to be in Sloyersville and Briggsville.

At one time it was called the 'THREE CHURCHES', originally Reformed, then Union Lutheran and Reformed, and at a later date Evangelical. Then a Methodist Church was established and built. The Evangelical and the Methodist Churches, and the buildings, also, were lost due to the lack of interest and the buildings went to the winds and the stones. There is no semblance of the last built churches anymore. The cemetery is well kept and peaceful. The present church is a Union Lutheran and Reformed Church.

In 1800 the services were preached in homes. The first church was built in 1811. It was a log building, weather-boarded, and painted later, with galleries on three sides. This building was replaced in 1868 by a brick building. It was not a large congregation ... in 1851 having only 75 Lutherans and 25 Reformed. There are no records for the time period from 1816 to 1822. The land on which the church was built was deeded to the congregation in 1816 by George Keen.

The following inscription appears on the cover of the record

"September 27,1812"

1. "Church Book for the Nescopeck Congregation to Luzerne County"

Church Book for the Nescopeck Congregation - begun by Rev. Thomas Pomp. V.D.m. Reformed Pastor in Easton, 1809. (VDm means: Verci Dei minister or Minister of the word of God)

2. In this book shall be recorded the Baptisms and names of the Parents and also the Sponsors.

[On the last page of the church book is a record of an election held for elders and deacons ... there is no date. ]

Elder - Peter Gut, Sr.; 11 votes. Michael Roeber; 11 votes.

Deacon - Peter Gut, Jr.; 11 votes. Jacob Rodler; 10 votes

29. JOHN PETER MYERS was born 1822 in Mifflinville, Mifflin Township, Columbia, Pennsylvania, and died after 1882. He married NANCY ________. She was born in 1821. Here is a picture of the couple.

Notes from Timothy Myers for JOHN PETER MYERS:

John was only three years old when his father died and nothing is known of his early years, except that he at some point moved to southwestern Bradford County, Pa. with his mother and stepfather Jacob Hinkle and the rest of the family.

John and Nancy Myers were married sometime prior to 1851 because their daughter Sarah was born in 1852. He was 30 years old at the time of her birth. They would have established themselves by that time in Sullivan County, although not as property owners. John Myers is listed in the 1855 taxables for Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pa as having 1 cow worth $10.50 and as being in the Militia. He is also listed in the 1857 taxables list as having one cow worth $10.00. This remains the same for most of the 1860's. In 1872 he is listed as John Mires and as being a miner with $30 taxable valuation. For several years throughout the 1870's, he is shown as a miner in Cherry Township; however the 1870 Census has the family in Nescopeck, Luzerne County. The 1882 taxable shows John Mayer with 60 acres, 2 horses, 1 cow for a total valuation of personal property of $224 and occupation as a miner. I find no listing after 1882 for John P. Myers.

John P and Nancy Myers were listed in the 1860 Census as living in in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. In 1870 they were in Nescopeck, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In this census, son Peter N. Myers was listed as 8 years old (his gravestone lists his birth date as 1860). John P. Myers is shown in the 1880 Census as being in the Township of Forks Drop, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania and as a 58 year old laborer. His wife Nancy was listed as a 59 year old house keeper. The only child still living at home was Peter N. Myers age 19. This is within 15 miles of where Peter was living when my Grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt Myers, was born in Eldredsville, PA, in 1903.

More research is needed to try to establish the maiden name of Nancy Myers. According to Mt. Zion Church records listed by Jane Fabrio, Nancy M. Myers was confirmed into the Mt. Zion church by Pastor A. R. HOTTENSTEIN, 02 May 1874. This is the time when John P. Myers and Nancy lived in Nescopek, down the hill and a few miles from Mt. Zion Church. However, Nancy Myers does appear on the Communion Lists prior to her confirmation: on April 6, 1873 as given by A. R. Hottenstein - Reformed Pastor; and also on the November 1873 list, the April 1874 list, and the May 3, 1874 list. Daughter Mary Myers (unless this is a cousin) does also appear on the April 1874 list.

Here is a picture of John Myers with his two sons, taken about 1877.

37. PETER NATHANIEL MYERS (JOHN PETER, DANIEL, HENRY MYERS) was born February 10, 1862 in Berwick, Columbia, Pennsylvania, and died January 12, 1920 in New Albany, Bradford, Pennsylvania. He married (1) MARIA W. OLYPHANT May 10, 1886 in Dushore, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. He married (2) SARAH BLANCE About 1893. She was born April 27, 1851, and died December 08, 1893 in Nescopeck, Columbia, Pennsylvania. He married (3) LUCY EMMA STURDEVANT March 23, 1894, daughter of REV. IRA JONES STURDEVANT and LOIS INGHAM. Lucy was born May 07, 1860 in Black Walnut, Wyalusing, Bradford, Pennsylvania, and died March 12, 1937 in New Albany, Bradford, Pennsylvania. She was a widow when she married Peter, her previous husband, Mark Lee, having died on December 16, 1890. The Sturdevant (alternatively spelled "Sturtivant", "Sturtivans" or "Sturtevant") family is a very old one in Bradford and Sullivan Counties. They arrived there from Connecticut after the ancestral emigrant left England in the seventeenth century. One of the very earliest photographs surviving from northern Pennsylvania is the following photograph of ELDER ELISHA STURDEVANT, brother of REVEREND ELIJAH STURDEVANT, Lucy Sturdevant's grandfather. Elisha had eighteen children by two wives.

Notes from Timothy Myers for PETER NATHANIEL MYERS:

After several years of looking at the evidence, I have decided that the family tradition which says that Peter N. Myers was born in Berwick, Pa. may be accurate based on the taxable list and census information available for his mother and father. These records show that they were in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania at least as early as 1855 and on through the US Census records for 1860. The family did, however, appear on the 1870 Census in Nescopeck, Luzerne County, PA. However, they may have moved to Berwick, Pa. after the 1860 Census but prior to 1862. Berwick is right across the Susquehanna River from Nescopek where they lived in 1870. His father John P. Myers lived in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania at least as early as 1840 before he married Catherine [as it appears he did] and before 1850 when he appears to have been married to Catherine [or at least living with her].

John and Nancy do appear on the Cherry Township taxables list in 1854 and stay on that list until at least 1864. John and Nancy also appear on the US Census records for 1860 in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pa. and they continued on both lists for at least 20 more years. The family did, however, appear on the 1870 Census in Nescopek, Luzerne County, Pa. This is two years after the death of Peter's grandmother Mary Susanna Kennedy. The 1883 taxables list for Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pa. does list for the first time P. Mayer with one cow and his occupation as 'wagon maker', with a total valuation of $37.

The following mention of Peter Myers was in the Sullivan Review, June 19, 1884:

A fatal and shocking accident occurred in Forks Twp. last Wednesday morning by which Reuben RINEBOLD lost his life. RINEBOLD, Philip SHAFER, Peter MEYERS and Curtis RUMSEY were engaged in peeling bark on the land of William LAMBERT. SHAFER and MEYERS were chopping down a tree while RUMSEY and RINEBOLD were spudding the bark from one already cut down. The tree, when about to fall, started in the direction of RINEBOLD and RUMSEY, contrary to the expectations of the choppers, who immediately gave warning to the men in danger, who ran at once. RUMSEY succeeded in escaping, but RINEBOLD, who ran in another direction, was caught by the limbs of the falling tree and so severely injured that he never regained consciousness, although he lived until about midnight. He leaves a wife and one child.

I have just (November 29, 2002) made the connection to Philip Shafer - it has been staring at me for two years - he was the son of Peter's 1/2 Aunt Elizabeth Hinkle and therefore a 'cousin' of Peter. When I spent time with Lois Nichols and her husband Cliff on April 19, 2001, she told me that she had heard this story before. Peter was involved in the logging industry for many years as the above record relates. The family moved many times after 1905 in the spring of each year as they followed the logging trade. According to Doris Lee, her mother told of getting tired of moving every year when she was a child. We do know that they lived near LeRaysville, Pa about 1908 since this is where the post card photo of Peter working as a teamster and driving a team for the Johnson and Son Furniture store in LeRaysville was taken. This was verified by his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Tuthill (Aunt Libby) in a 1977 article about crokinole board games which appeared in the local Rocket-Courier. The photo was also re-printed in that article.

Birth registry records show that they lived in Forks in 1894 when Anna Lois was born, and in 1897 when Lucy E. was born, as well as in 1898 when Fannie E. was born. The census records for 1900 show that they were still living in Eldredsville, Forks, Sullivan County. Unfortunately I did not check the taxable for that town for 1900 to verify. We also know that in 1901 they lived in Eldredsville, Sullivan County and continued there at least until 1905. I have annual assessment records showing them owning a house, 86 acres of land, a horse, a cow, and a dog each year.

Peter's Uncle George Y. Myers and half Uncle, Philip Hinkle bought and owned land in Dushore during 1858 and his father and mother, John P. and Nancy Myers lived in Cherry Township, Sullivan County from around 1855 until 1882, after which they no longer appear on the taxable lists. They appear on the 1880 Census for Cherry Township with Peter N, the only child living at home still. His brother Thomas seems to have been killed in 1883*. So, the entire family was in the area for many years. Peter N. Myers was first married to Maria Olyphant on May 10, 1886. There was some family tradition which held this to be so. Lois Nichols stated to me that she had heard this story, as did Doris Lee. Edmund Myers, Sr.'s grandson, Mike Bates and his wife found the original marriage certificate for this marriage in the papers of Edmund's daughter Florence Myers Bates Conklin. There is nothing known of this woman or this marriage except the date. Peter had just recently turned 22 years old at the time.

* See the listing for Thomas and the newspaper clipping from Joyce Tice's Tri-County Genealogy Site and the Rhoda English-Ladd newspaper clipping collection at the Tioga County Historical Society.

Peter was then married to Sarah Blance (I think it was Blance) about 1892-93. The MT. Zion church in Briggsville/Necopeck, Pennsylvania, under the Pastor W. D. Donat's church records, Book Two, lists: a Baptism for the daughter of Peter N. Myers and his wife Sarah Blance, i.e., Florence Blance Myers who was born on February 24, 1893, and baptized on October 15, 1893. This is the town in Luzerne County where the Myers/Kishbaugh family lived. Peter's aunt (his father's sister) Lavina Myers Kishbaugh and her husband Jacob Kishbaugh were members of this church for about 50 years. Mt. Zion Church records show that both Sarah and Florence Myers were buried at the church cemetery, as were Lavina and Jacob Kishbaugh; Lavina, John P. and Peter Myers' mother Mary Susanna Payne Myers Hinkle Kennedy, and the aforementioned Peter Myers and some of his family. Doris Teeter Mclinko Lee tells a story of how her Grandpa Myers (Peter) had been married and how his wife and baby daughter died of typhoid fever. Her grandmother Lucy Myers (my great grandmother) used to tell of how Grandpa Myers (Peter) kept a suitcase with a pair of baby shoes inside which he had for many years. It was believed they were from his baby daughter who had died even though he never talked about that wife or that daughter to his family. Lois Nichols said that she had heard from her mother when she was a child, that Peter had been married two times before he married Lucy.

Peter N. Myers married Lucy Lee Sturdevant in 1894, four months after this other wife's death. Nothing else is known of Sarah, his first wife. He worked in the logging/lumbering industry for some years, we know, because of the family stories of them moving year after year following the lumbering. He also worked as a mason and a teamster. On April 12, 1894 Peter had mail still at the Lopez Post Office as the following notation shows:

"The following is the list of letters remaining uncalled for in the post office at Lopez for the month ending March 31, 1894 ........ Peter Meyer...."

There is a notation in the Sullivan Review, August 9, 1894, for Millview which states: "Two large rattlesnakes were killed on J.K. Bird's farm and W. Rinebold and Peter Meyers killed one near D.T. Huckell's recently." This was a few months after Peter had married Lucy Lee.

My Grandfather, Theodore R. Myers used to say that his father got sick, went to the Robert Packer hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, became even more sick, and died while in the hospital. He was only 16 years old and always said that the doctors killed his dad. Therefore, Grandfather refused to go to a doctor for the rest of his life, and he never did.

Much special thanks to Lois Painter Nichols for all of the many photos of Peter and Lucy Myers and other family members and the copies of "The Naughty Tango" sheet music, as well and to Doris Lee for all of her help in traipsing around Bradford and Sullivan County for/with me - and for a place to stay when I visited the area.

Notes from Timothy Myers for LUCY EMMA STURDEVANT:

Lucy E. Sturdevant as a child attended school and lived in the home of a third generation minister. She may have been somewhat privileged in her early life since the Sturdevants and Inghams were fairly prominent families in Bradford and Wyoming Counties, Pa. In fact there was a watercolor portrait done of her before she married. This was owned in April 2001 by Lois Painter Nichols. Lucy E. was married for the first time at 24 years old to Mark Lee. They had four children over a five year time period. Within 6 months of their son's birth in July 1890, Mark was killed in a railroad accident and she was left with no visible means of support. Not much has been passed down about that time in her life and the difficulties she must have faced.

In March 1894, just over three years later, she married Peter N. Myers. They went on to have 5 more children. They were very proud of their first child together, Anna Lois, and had a photo taken of the three of them which hangs on the wall of the Lois Nichols home. A copy is shown below on this page. We know she was a very small woman. We also know she came from a talented family. Her brother Lewis was a portrait artist and her sister also was a painter. Lucy herself published at least one song, "The Naughty Tango", which sold many copies; see the cover photo below.

Notes from Timothy Myers for FRANCES ELIZABETH MYERS:

Aunt Libby was always a favorite of all of the family. She was the one who gave Theodore R. Myers Jr. the lady's pocket watch which had belonged to her mother (Lucy Emma Myers). He was a collector of watches and clocks. She also was a great practical joker. Doris Lee tells a story that her mother related of one joke she played on her husband "Tut". He had played a joke on her; so to retaliate she bought a bottle of Birch Beer soda along with a Three Musketeer Candy Bar. When she got them home, she dumped the soda out and put coffee in the bottle and very carefully unwrapped that candy bar. She then carved a bar of soap in the form of the candy bar and melted some chocolate. She next dipped the soap into the chocolate and wrapped it in the candy bar wrapper. I guess he didn't eat the bar but only tried to bite into it! Aunt Libby was the one that everyone most especially loved.

About 1916

Notes from Timothy Myers for THEODORE ROOSEVELT MYERS:

My grandfather was named after President Theodore Roosevelt and his parents received a letter signed by the President's secretary thanking them for naming their son after the President.

My Grandfather, Theodore R. Myers, was the one I mentioned above who used to say that his father got sick, went to the hospital, and died while in the hospital (Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa) so he refused to go to a Doctor for the rest of his life. He was true to his word and never did go to the doctors or a hospital until he passed on. His death was caused when he fell from the ladder as he was climbing on the roof of his camp at a lake in Oxford, NY when he was 82 years old.

He worked at Goudy Station power plant (New York State Electric and Gas Corporation) in Johnson City, New York for over 40 years until his retirement and received a gold watch when he reached 50 years as an employee (in retirement).

Grandpa used to say that he was "Pennsylvania Dutch" and that the famous football player, Harold "Red" Grange, was his cousin. I always thought this was something he made up, but I have found that this claim was true! I know that he was a good athlete and played baseball on the town teams that were prevalent during 1920's, 1930's and 1940's around the Binghamton, NY area. Grandpa loved sports and used to watch baseball games all summer long. He loved to play catch with a baseball once in a while. At one family reunion down at Uncle Ellicott Lee's house (where they were still held in 2001), he was playing catch with my brother (who was playing high school baseball at the time), and he threw the ball so hard that my brother had to duck out of the way and the ball went right through the lawn chair that he was sitting on.

My grandfather used to talk of Aunt "Lib", Aunt Sadie, and Aunt Norma. The Aunt "Lib" is Elizabeth Margaret Hinkle Shaffer (the half sister of his grandfather John P. Myers); Aunt Sadie is "Red" Grange's mother; and Aunt Norma is "Red's" older sister.

Dad tells some stories about Grandpa which are really funny. One time it seems they were riding in Grandpa's 'Humble’ along the Susquehanna River on the way to Masonville, NY to visit Grandpa Kishpaugh, when the wooden spoked wheel came off the car and rolled down into the creek. (I can see Grandpa cursing now!!!). He told us that they used to raise chickens at the Sanitaria Springs house. They would have chicken for dinner from time to time. It seems that Grandpa wanted to get one of the roosters for dinner one night and he could not catch the chicken. He picked up a brick to throw at him and missed and killed one of his prized hens!

I remember many times when Grandpa used to talk about his own grandfather, Ira J. Sturdevant, with great reverence. He also used to look at me and say that I was solid like his father who was over 200 pounds!

Notes from Timothy Myers for RUTH ELIZABETH KISHPAUGH:

Grandma Myers used to say that she was born in Dover, New Jersey (near the town of Newton) and was part Native American. This same story has been a part of family tradition for several branches of the Kishpaugh family, so I believe it to be true. Supposedly it was Simeon Kishpaugh who married a Native American woman. Proving it may be very difficult, however. One of Grandma's sisters, Lena, died as an infant when grandma was only about 1-2 years old. Her older brother, Victor, died in 1918 when he was 19 years old, during the worldwide influenza pandemic. This saddened her greatly for many years and she named her first born child, my dad, after him. Her brother was Victor Valentine Kishpaugh and she named my Dad Victor Roy Myers.

Grandma ended up having 10 children, my Dad being the oldest. She worked at Fairplay Carmel on Grand Boulevard in Johnson City, NY when Dad was very young; and when they lived in Fairmont Park. For many years thereafter, Grandma used to have flavored caramel 'suckers' for all of us kids whenever we visited. Grandpa used to bring them home to Sanitaria Springs weekly since he worked for the rest of his working life at the Goudey Station in Johnson City.

I used to go almost every summer and stay at Grandma and Grandpa Myers house in Sanitaria Springs, New York. I remember playing with my brother Ted and cousin Jimmy Hoover in the creek down over the hill behind their house; w e used to catch 'crabs' there. I also remember playing in the old cherry tree up behind where the barn used to be across the street.

We used to go to their house often for Sunday dinner. I will never forget the sound of the pressure cooker going with the roast beef inside. Grandma used to have fresh homemade bread always too and 'farmer's' milk from the farm up the road in a big glass jar in the refrigerator. I remember the wraparound porch where we used to sit and play and the big pine trees in the front that we used to play hide and seek around. We would sometimes take hikes away across the field across from their house. There was another creek way up there that we would swim in.

I also remember the time when I was about six when my brother Steve hit a bowl of hot tomato soup off the table and it flew all over my face. I had blisters for a couple of weeks and had to miss school. I remember having lots of popsicles that week. There was one time when me and Ted were playing in the old 'doodle-bug' parked across the street when a swarm of yellow-jackets came out from under the seat and stung him a BUNCH of times. Grandma made a poultice of mud and put it all over him. What wonderful times we all had up there. I never heard my Grandmother Myers ever say a bad thing about anybody. I don't ever remember her raising her voice to anyone either, although I'm sure there were times when she did. She used to say, "If you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything".

I remember when I went away to college and there was a one page write-up about me in the local sports magazine, how proud she was. She cut it out and put it in her scrap book. When Grandpa Myers fell and was in the hospital for the first time in his life, and Dad and all of his brothers and sisters were at the hospital and I was there too, Grandma called me in to talk with her. I was the only grandchild she asked what to do about allowing him to die peacefully or trying to keep him alive. I knew he hated doctors and would never want to spend time in the hospital and told her so. They disconnected him from all of the equipment and he died that night. She took me aside at her house after his death and hugged me and asked me to help her go through all of his bank books etc. The last time I saw her when she knew me was the night she had her last massive stroke. My brother Steve and I visited her in the hospital on our way back to Albany, NY. We had a great visit and she had the stroke about 2 hours later. She lived for another year but did not really recognize anyone. I loved that lady more than I can say!

59. VICTOR ROY MYERS (THEODORE ROOSEVELT, PETER NATHANIEL, JOHN PETER, DANIEL, HENRY MYERS) was born January 28, 1928 in Johnson City, Broome, New York. He married ELAINE 'BERNITA' ALTA KOLANDA June 15, 1951 in Sanitaria Springs, Broome New York, daughter of WALTER KOLANDA and NELLIE CLEVELAND. She was born April 19, 1933 in Mansfield, Richmond, Tioga, Pennsylvania.

Notes from Timothy Myers for VICTOR ROY MYERS:

Dad was born at 11:08 AM on Saturday, January 28, 1928 in Johnson City, New York. His birth certificate says 11:06 AM but Grandma's book says 11:08 AM. The story Grandma always told was that Dad was born with a broken back. This has been very painful for him his entire life. He was to be the oldest of 10 children. They lived at Fairmont Park in Johnson City, N. Y. until 1936, when IBM bought the land for the golf course. This is when the family moved to Sanitaria Springs, NY where some of the family still lived in the house in 2001.

When Dad was in the 3rd or 4th grade he had polio and spent the summer at Aunt Daisy's house in South Warren, Bradford County, Pa. which was across the street from Aunt Libby and down the road from Uncle Ellicott Lee's house. A great place for a boy to spent a summer, even if he was ill. Dad also had pneumonia when he was a little older and had a rib removed on his left side and had a tube inserted to drain the fluid. He still has a very deep scar in his side from this.

Dad was not able to play football in high school because of his back, but being from a very athletic family he played any way. He was playing on a semi-pro team in Binghamton when he was 17 and broke his leg. He was in a full leg cast for 17 weeks. During this time, he began to dig and expand the root cellar under the house in Sanitaria Springs into a full cellar.

Dad tells a story of how he used to ride bareback on work horses with his friend Bill Hamilton all the time. One time, it seems, they were riding above the house in Sanitaria Springs and the train whistle blew, scaring the horse he was riding. The horse went running back to the barn and stopped dead when it got to the barn door which was closed. The horse stopped and Dad did not. He flew over the horse's head into the wall of the barn! Bill Hamilton's grandfather owned land down in Stilesville (near Deposit), NY where we all hunted for deer into the early 1980's.

Dad also tells of how he was once driving his 1941 Ford convertible and three deer jumped right at the top of the car when he had the roof down. He said he ducked and one deer went over the hood, one over top of him, and another over the trunk.

Dad said that he worked mowing for $ .50 per day and at the Rosen Bag factory in Sanitaria Springs for a couple of summers. He also worked for a while with Grandpa at the Power Station in Johnson City. Dad worked for New York State at the Chenango Valley State Park for several years and, when construction workers were needed for the St. Lawrence Sea Way, he went with one of my uncles to work there for a few years. We finally all moved up to Norfolk, NY for a few years when we were little.

After the Sea Way was completed, we all moved back to Sanitaria Springs and then to Gahagan Road (now Jackson Road), Town of Binghamton, NY. That is where Grandpa Kolanda gave Mom and Dad a couple of acres of land where we lived--in the same house trailer we had lived in at Norfolk while Dad started building the house they still live in. This was in 1957-58. We lived in the basement for several years until Mom and Dad accumulated enough money to start building the rest of the house. We moved upstairs in 1965.

One thing about Dad is that he is probably the best deer hunter I will ever know. I remember waiting for him to come home with a deer when we were very small and then being excited on the bus coming home from school each day to see if he had gotten his deer yet. He used to hunt in Pennsylvania each year and fill his doe tag too. As each of us boys got old enough, he took us into the woods and taught us how to hunt. I really love that about dad. He took the time to teach us the things he loved. We hunted every year on Jackson Road as well as down in 'rifle country' in Stilesville, NY. There he taught us how to 'stillhunt'. I shot many deer down there while hunting with dad. We camped in the truck camper he bought for several years when we hunted.

We used to go fishing when we were kids. When I got older and taught in Roscoe near the famous Beaverkill River and Wilowemoc Creek, we got 'hot and heavy' into trout fishing and Dad began to tie trout flies. He got so good that he was tieing for the famous Harry and Elsie Darby in Roscoe. We spent many hours fishing and catching trout. There were several times when me and Dad and Steve went up into the Adirondack Mountains near Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, NY to fish. We had great times there. So much so that I started going up there every year with my friend Tom Kinsman to fish.

Dad worked his whole life since I can remember on construction - with his bad back he suffered for all of those years. He would always work during the winter when he was laid off, delivering oil and then at the Innsbruck USA ski area near Binghamton as a snow maker. This was another thing we did because of dad. We started skiing down the pipeline behind the house on some old wooden skis he bought when Ted and I were about 9 or 10. When they opened the ski area we were there. Every day and night. Dad made sure we made ski trips too. The only time I ever missed school - ever - was for a couple of ski trips. What great times. We had season passes for Innsbruck USA and we all went - Mom loved to ski too!!

Notes for ELAINE 'BERNITA' ALTA KOLANDA:

My mom, Elaine "Bernita" Kolanda Myers was the only one of the children in her family born in the old family home town of her mother's family in Mansfield, Richmond, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. My Grandfather, Walter J. Kolanda had worked in the Endicott Johnson Shoe Corporation rubber plant in Johnson City, New York during the 1920's until after 1931. At that time the family lived at 13 Arch St, in Johnson City. My grandfather was one of the many people who lost their jobs as the Great Depression worsened and the family was forced to move to Mansfield into the home of my grandmother's parents. She was born there.

They moved back to Johnson City and then Binghamton within a few years where they bought a house at 34 Munsell St. Mom tells of how during the Depression, when she was small, they used to walk the railroad tracks collecting coal which had dropped from the trains to help heat the house in the winter because they were struggling greatly to make ends meet.

In 1948 Mom was 15 and had a seven week bout with Scarlet Fever. She was very ill and missed half of the school year. There is a wonderful newspaper photo of her at her 15th birthday party in April with several friends and her sister Lorriane after she had finally recovered from this illness. All of my cousins and Aunts and Uncles call my mother "Bernita". I always just took it for granted that this was a nick-name. In talking to Mom recently l discovered why this was her 'name'. My grandmother had always wanted to name her Bernita but a couple of months before she was born one of my grandmother's Watkins cousins named her daughter 'Bernita. My grandmother was very upset and named my mother Elaine Alta, BUT when she was baptized my grandmother and grandfather had her Baptized as Bernita Elaine Kolanda. Now l know why she is called 'Aunt Ber' by all of my cousins and Bernita by her sisters and brothers.

Mom worked for a couple of years at Chris's Hot Dogs on Chenango St. in Binghamton and later at the Victory Market on the South side of Binghamton.

Notes for LINDSEY VERONICA MYERS:

Lindsey Veronica Myers was born at 7:42 PM at the Bellview Maternity Hospital, Niskayuna, New York on September 29, 1987. She finally came after 43 gruelling hours - mostly difficult for Mom but, also not such a restful time for her Dad either. What a memorable day and week followed!! Three days after she was born we had an early heavy, wet snow storm. She had to stay a few days at the hospital, but Mom insisted she come home. Power was out for almost a week because the snow was so heavy and wet that there were trees and lines down all over - Thank the Lord for our wood stove!

Lindsey attended the St. Coleman's Nursery School for Kindergarten and Latham Ridge Elementary School in Latham, New York and was a GREAT student achieving almost straight "A"'s those first seven years. She has been very active, playing softball, lacrosse - she is good and LOVES it (following in her brother's footsteps), basketball, horseback riding, violin, Young Actor's Guild, and she has been dancing now for TEN of her twelve years. She continues to do very well at Shaker Jr. High School.

Remembrance Card
Minerva (Kays) Kishpaugh (1875-1924)
Mother of Ruth Elizabeth (Kishpaugh) Myers
Dated November 27, 1924
Photo Contributed by Timothy Myers
This neat approximately 14" by 10" remembrance card was rolled up and hidden by Ruth Elizabeth Kishpaugh Myers with several other old family things. Note: The 1900 Federal census for Newton, New Jersey, where she then lived, indicates that she was born in 1875, but then says she is "35" years old. The year date appears more consistent with the evidence for the age of her husband and son Victor in the same record.
