We are indebted to Carol Brotzman, Joyce Frink, and the late Franklin ("Frank") Edward and Odessa Fay (Rhoads) Thrasher,
for this historical presentation. Carol, Joyce and Frank are all Thrasher descendants. The contributors wish to make clear that this review is
by no means a complete genealogy, but rather their best effort at a beginning. You will also note that the Thrasher and Landback families were closely related by
marriage, and that these families in turn were related by marriage and ancestry to several of the other old German families in the area.
We also wish to thank Amanda Brotzman, Carol's daughter, for her expert assistance in
upgrading and refining several of the pictures shown below. Please address proposed changes or additions to
Carol at brotzmans@epix.net. The other contributors can also be reached at Joyce Frink and

Generation No. 2
3. George Mathias Thrasher (Samuel, George Thrasher (Drescher)) was born June 16, 1842 in
PA, and died October 16, 1926 in Johnson City, New York. He married Frances Amelia Sites November 30, 1876 in Jackson Township, Trucksville,
Luzerne County, PA. She was born April 27, 1859 in PA, and died 1941.
Notes for George Mathias Thrasher: Information on this family comes from Odessa Thrasher in Florida.
George M. Thrasher brought his bride back to Dushore to live for 10 years , then in LaPorte 7 years, Thorndale 6
years, Lopez and Ricketts 17 years. In 1913, they moved to Bradford County, Towanda, PA. In 1915, they moved to
Johnson City, New York, where they both passed on.
George Mathias Thrasher enlisted in the Union army at Harrisburg, PA on May 15,1861, as a private, Company 1, 6th
regiment of PA Volunteers. He was honorably discharged at Bristol Station, Virginia, on Feb. 12, 1864. He immediately
re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer as a private in Company E, 191st. Regiment, PA Volunteers, discharged June 12,
1865 at Annaapolis, MD. Applied for his Union pension on Nov. 18, 1912, at the age of 70, residing in Ricketts,
Sullivan County, PA. The reason for his disability claim was gunshot wound to right side of neck.
Bette, his grandaughter, recorded that George Mathias was a prisoner during the Civil War in the notorious Andersonville, GA
Prison. She doesn't recall how long he was there ,but he spoke of only having corn meal to eat while he was there
and all the men lost about half of their body weight
George was 5'8'' inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and red hair. He worked as a distiller.
(according to the military records at the time of enlistment). His true height was over 6 feet. He was district commander of the
"GAR" for many years.
Thelma , his grandaughter, remembered that he ran away and joined the Army at 16 years old. George said that Gen.
Grant was crazy and had them destroy everything. George M. Thrasher thought the man was insane but had to follow
orders. George said that Abraham Lincoln came to Gettysburg, PA and went from tent to tent shaking hands with
them. That was the night before the battle. This story is most likely mixing up events because Lincoln was not at Gettysburgh
during the battle, which actually came about through accidental encounter of the Union and Confederate armies. Lincoln may very well have met George and
other soldiers after the battle somewhere in the general theater of operations. The famous Gettysburgh Address was not given until November,
1863, some four months later.

The following information from Joyce Frink pertaining to George M Thrasher is obtained from a military file:
George M. Thrasher's Civil War info as I have it. He joined 4/23/1861 Co. I, 6th Reg. PA Reserve Inf at Towanda,
PA as a private. He was discharged 2/12/1864 by reason of re-enlistment as veteran volunteer 2/28/1865 to Co. E,
191st Reg PA Inf - made corporal and was discharged 6/12/1865 by reason of general orders #77 Civil War Dept.
Listed him as of fair complexion, 5' 9 3/4" height, blue eyes, and red hair. Occupation: distiller, before enlistment.
Civil War Action: Wounded in action at Fredicksburg, VA, 12/13/1862. In Washington DC hospital--- severe neck
injury. Captured at Cold Harbor, VA on 5/30/1864 and confined at Richmond VA on 5/31/64; sent to Andersonville,
Georgia on 6/8/64; confined at Florence, S.C., 9/15/64; paroled at Charleston, SC on 12/6/64; reported to Camp
Parole, Maryland on 12/15/64; furloughed 12/16/64 for 30 days; medical certificate filed for extension of furlough
20 days on 1/15/65 (chronic diarrhea and general disability); further extension of 30 days from 2/16/65; another
extension 20 days from 3/18/65; further extension 30 days from 5/8/65 due to a team running away with him producing a
"concussion of the left shoulder & affection of the sternum", and returned 5/19/65 and mustered out 6/12/65.
At 50 yrs old, chronic diarrhea & kidney trouble real bad -- still seeing Dr. McHenry in Dushore on 4/1892
(doctor says he visited him every week from discharge from Army and up until last 2 yrs, at which time he continued to
see him every month or two) -- can only do half man's labor. All of this was a 27 yr. time interval, if my calculations
are right. This is from info on his military records and doctor's records.
As mentioned, Joyce Frink has the military papers on George M. Thrasher. While reading through them, she found an
affadavit from Broome County, New York. January 22, 1927 that Boyd F. Heverly had written to the government for
Frances Amelia Thrasher. It states that George M Thrasher was born in Dushore, Sullivan County, PA, July 21, 1867.
He resided in Endicott, New york after 1918. He states that the father of George M. Thrasher and his (Boyd's)
grandmother were brother and sister. Boyd (1867-1943) was the son of Reuben Heverly (1836-1919) and Elizabeth (Graff) Heverly. The grandparents he
was referring to were Samuel Thrasher and Catherine (Thrasher) Heverly (1800-1873), wife of Philip Heverly (1803-1880).

Note: You can learn more about the Landback family at The Descendants of Harvey Landback and Caroline Thrasher.
As mentioned in the introduction to this history, the Landback family was intermarried with several other old
German families from Sullivan County, all of whom had emigrated to this area from common parts of Pennsylvania
before, or about the same time, that Sullivan County was formed. Levi Landback had several siblings, one of whom was William H. Landback.
If you look at a family tree for Virginia Landback, the daughter of William H. Landback and Christiana Schock,
born in 1897, and whose lineage is shown here, the relationships become clearer.

9. Carl Llewellyn Thrasher (George Mathias, Samuel, George Thrasher (Drescher)) was born
June 25, 1892, and died October 24, 1957. He married Esther S. Hood. She was born in
1896 and died June 16, 1998 at age 101! Nine years after the death of Carl in 1957, Esther remarried to Claude Lockwood.
The grave stone for Carl and Esther is shown below, along with a foot stone in honor of
Carl's service in World War I. Carl actually served with his nephew Max C. Landback in Europe.
Thelma (Thrasher) Sutton, the mother of Frank Thrasher, our contributor, and a cousin to Max,
had this to say about Max and Carl in early 2002:
Max almost always rode on a motorcycle with a side car. With me having polio
and being sickly when I was young, Max always gave me lots of attention and
just spoiled me when he would visit us in Athens or we would visit them in
New York. I just loved him. He would load me into the side car and off to the store
for candy. He was handsome and about 6'4" with dark hair and a sharp dresser.
He was a steeple jack. He was also quite sickly himself as damage from the
gas caused him to cough and spit blood quite often.
Max and Uncle Carl Thrasher were in the war together. Everyone always said
that Uncle Carl went along with Max to protect him. Max and his Uncle Carl were
driving an ammunition truck when they came under heavy fire and they dove
under the truck for protection. A general came by and Max and Uncle Carl
grabbed a wrench and were pretending to repair the truck. They both received
medals for working on the truck while under fire. Except for the family, they
never told the truth to anyone about why they were under that truck. When
they had the gas attack, it was Uncle Carl who shoved a gas mask on Max, but
it was too late to help much. The gas pretty much wiped Max's health away.

10. Warren Freeman Thrasher (George Mathias, Samuel, George Thrasher (Drescher)) was born
September 03, 1895 in PA, and died September 06, 1970 in Pottstown, PA. He married Edna
Mayetta French on September 02, 1913, daughter of Sidney French. She was born October 22, 1894
in Powell, PA, and died September 26, 1967 in Pottstown, PA.
Note from Joyce Frink: Edna Mayetta was daughter of Sidney French
who is buried in the main cemetery in Towanda, PA near the RR tracks and near the Susquehanna River. I located the stone and I remember as a very young child my father lifting me up to see Sidney French
at the funeral home when he died.... and I looked for him a long time and I found him.
I must have been about 5-6 yrs -- it was either 1948 or 1949. Anyways, that memory always
stuck with me and one day I was able to prove that he was the one my dad took me to see.

Petersburg, Florida. He married Frances Jerusha Rogers about May 14, 1935. She was born
May 14, 1912 in Chemung, New York, and died April 18, 1984 in Saint Petersburg, Florida. The grave marker for Kenneth, and his wife Frances, is shown above, courtesy of their daughter, Joyce (Thrasher) Frink.
Notes for Kenneth George Thrasher from Joyce Frink:
My dad, Kenneth George Thrasher was born in Towanda, PA at home
there on 3rd Street. His father, Warren, eventually moved to Johnson City and worked in the EJ Shoe
Factory for 19 yrs. First he worked the leatherboard, then went to Boys & Youth EJ, which
was located in back of the Johnson City Library. After that, he became what they called
a "treer". In 1919, they moved from "JC" to Stella Ireland Road (sort of in the Town of
Endwell). Warren, after EJ, got a job at ITR and worked there 18 yrs and moved to W.
Endicott at some period of time..... I don't know exactly when, but they were there in
1950 when my brother was born.... and I remember going there a couple of times. ITR was
the company that eventually turned into IBM and my Grandfather, Warren, did go to IBM.
When he got out of IBM, I'm not sure, but before 1954 (definitely before 1955), as he was up
in Whitney Point with his daughter Lillian Thrasher.
Warren & his son-in-law Leo Whitney bought a tavern and that business fizzled. They
then moved to Brackney, PA , an old farmstead and were living there in 1958 when my dad's
youngest brother, Marvin got killed in an auto accident. Marvin & his wife Ramona and
their 5 kids also lived there.
We moved to St. Petersburg FL in 1955-57 and, during that time, my grandparents came there
to think about re-locating there.... but didn't. Lillian Whitney, my father's sister, & family did relocate
there during that time also. My Grandparents then moved on to Pottstown, PA.... how that
came about.... I don't know.... or why there. Anyhow, Marvin's wife and kids moved
there also along with my dad's sister, Marjorie Sprague, and her family.
