Mrs. Huffmaster, a former resident of Dushore and Cherry twp. is presently a guest in the Skilled Nursing Unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira.

The Rev. Edgar C. Reed, pastor of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, recently visited Mrs. Huffmaster in Elmira. During the visit, Rev. Reed interviewed Mrs. Huffmaster about her 100 years of life in Sullivan County and Elmira.

When asked to what she attributed her long life, she stated, "Good conduct and decent, respectable living. I’m not ashamed of anything I ever did. I would not live any differently if I could live my life all over again. I lived 35 years on Carpenter St. and 23 years in Elmira."

When asked what she considers her greatest accomplishment in life, she said, "My Sunday School work. I had 20 years perfect attendance in Dushore, one year in Elmira. I also belonged to the Sewing Club at church in Elmira"

"The most difficult period in my life was when the tornado hit the silk mill in Dushore in the early 1900’s. I was in a full body cast from armpits to toes. The tornado hit around 9 p.m. and took the whole side of the building down," she said Mrs. Huffmaster recalled the date to be 1934-35, "the same day that Dr. Biddle buried his wife."

" I have no regrets whatsoever in my life." she stated. "The one thing I’m thankful for is to have my mind and that I can wait on and take care of myself as long as I’m here, " referring to St. Joseph’s.

Mrs. Huffmaster says she is in "good health except for broken bones"

A brief history of Mrs. Huffmaster’s family and life appeared in the Nov. 2, 1978 issue of The Sullivan Review. She has relatives living in Elmira, Wilmot and Cherry twp. who visit her frequently.

BODY OF BABY FOUND ON GARBAGE DUMP

Mrs. Irene Huffmaster and Daughter Florence Must Answer for Death of Illegitimate Child

The finding of the dead body of a baby on a pile of rubbish along the railroad track about 100 yards North of the S & N.Y. shops, Friday afternoon, brings to light one of the most revolting cases recorded in Towanda in a long time. Chief of Police Watson and Coroner Dr. T. Ben Johnson, who were present when the baby was found and who have been conducting an investigation, say that it is the worst case ever to come to their notice.

Though revolting in many respects, yet around it all is a tinge of sadness. The old saying 'half the world does not know how the other half lives' holds true here. Half of Towanda does not know how the other half lives. Chief Watson and Coroner Johnson have learned that the baby was born on Sunday night Oct. 31 to 15 years old Florence Huffmaster, unmarried daughter of Mrs. Irene Huffmaster, aged about 35. Mrs. Huffmaster and Florence lived in the "Red Row" on South Main Street and there the child was born. The young mother was unattended by a doctor and on Friday when Chief Watson and Coroner Johnson visited the house was still quite ill.

Chief Watson's attention was directed to the Huffmaster apartment in the "Red Row" by the Health Board, to whom complaint had been made by people of the neighborhood. The scene, which the officers found, beggars description. Coroner Johnson suspected the truth and made inquiry of Mrs. Huffmaster and her daughter. Both denied everything and claimed that there was nothing wrong in the household.

When questioned as to medical attention the girl had received, she denied having any. Coroner Johnson then asked Mrs. Huffmaster what she did with the baby and she frankly told him that she had buried it on the river bank. Coroner Johnson and Chief Watson took Mrs. Huffmaster to the river bank, but they could not find the grave. Finally she led them to the rubbish heap along the railroad track and pointed out the child's body, which had been covered over with leaves.

Coroner Johnson told her to take the body back home. She complied with the request and the body was taken back to the "Red Row" thence to a neighbor's where the body was washed. The body was taken in charge by Undertaker Maryott and Saturday afternoon Coroner Johnson performed an autopsy. He found it a fully developed female child and that it was born alive. He states that death was due to neglect, no attention being given the baby after birth. The body was deposited on the pile of rubbish and covered over with leaves soon after birth.

Mrs. Huffmaster and daughter disappeared Friday night or early Saturday morning but they have been located and will be held accountable for the death of the child. District Attorney Culver has prepared a complaint and warrants will be served by Chief Watson for the arrest of the mother and daughter.

Man in the Case

The unfortunate girl broke down while being questioned by Chief Watson and Coroner Johnson and named the father of the child. He will also be called upon to answer before the bar of Justice. Mrs. Huffmaster and daughter lived in Dushore before coming here in September.
