Edgar married Clara Marie MERRIAM on 12 Apr 1871 in
Iowa. Clara was born on 8 Feb 1852 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. She died on 31
Aug 1928 in Gresham, Multnomah Co., OR. She was buried in Gresham Pioneer
Cemetery, Multnomah, OR.
The death of Mrs. Clara Sunday, who passed away Friday, August
31, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Frank Metzger, while not unexpected, came
as an event of personal loss to a large number of friends in Gresham and
vicinity, as well as numerous descendants. Mrs. Sunday had been in frail health
for several years and during the last few months suffered from cancer of the
stomach, the immediate cause of her death.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Sunday
afternoon, Dr. A. S. Hisey of Salem, district superintendent of the Methodist
church, preaching the sermon. The Rev. H. V. Wilhelm, pastor of the Gresham
Methodist church and the Rev. Oliver Gill, pastor of the Pleasant Home
Methodist church took part in the services. At the request of Mrs. Sunday,
Leslie Walrad sang a solo, "Leave It With Him," one of her favorites.
Hymns were sung by a quartet consisting of Mrs. J. E. Gates, Mrs. H. L. St.
Clair, C. E. Rusher and Leslie Walrad, with Mrs. Leslie Walrad at the piano.
The pall bearers were J. W. Cooper, H. L. St. Clair, James Lawrence, T. H.
Gill, W. W. Hastings and A. R. Lyman. Arrangements were in charge of Gates
Funeral home.
Clara Maria Merriam was born near Boston, Mass., February 8,
1852. She was married to Edgar Hoagland April 12, 1871, in Iowa. Seven children
were born to this union, five of whom survive. Mr. Hoagland died in 1883 and
later Mrs. Hoagland was married to Geo. Sunday, who has also passed away. One
son was born to this union. Mrs. Sunday's surviving children are Dr. Descom D.
Hoagland of Springfield, Mass., Mrs. Myrta Lingle of Damascus, Mrs. Aurilla Schuyler
of Ringling, Mont., Mrs. Ethelyn Beebe of Missoula, Mont., Mrs. Josie Metzger
of Gresham and Melvin I. Sunday of Hood River, Oregon. Besides her children,
Mrs. Sunday is survived by 31 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Mrs. Schuyler
came recently from Montana to be with her mother but was called home only a few
days before Mrs. Sunday's death by illness in her own family. She could not
return for the funeral.
Mrs. Sunday had been a resident of Gresham and vicinity, for the
last 30 years. Two years ago she went to Damascus to make her home with her
daughter, Mrs. Lingle. She joined the Methodist church when 13 years of age and
in all the years since has been a loyal and devout member of that denomination.
Her activity in the church did not cease until the time she left Gresham two
years ago. As a Sunday school teacher she was especially useful, and her
faithfulness to the work and remarkable. Nothing but illness or absence from
home could keep her from her class, and many young people and older people of
this vicinity have come under her good influence in this capacity.
