Pennsylvania Death Records are formally recorded beginning in 1906.

Your best, and perhaps only, chances of finding an earlier one is by either:
(1) checking the partial records on hand at the Sullivan County Court House in Laporte, PA
(2) contacting the church that the person belonged to, if any, because SOME of the churches have records.
(3) checking in the Sullivan Review newspaper within the week or so after the death for an obituary; these are on file locally as well.

The Sullivan Review began mid 1878. Before that it was called the Sullivan Co. Democrat.
There was also a paper called the Sullivan Gazette but I think that paper came later.
There are some issues of the Sullivan Co. Democrat in the 1850’s and 60’s. There is not much news in them.
I haven’t seen any papers from 1865 to 1877. I have seen the 1878. That is half Sullivan Co. Democrat and half Sullivan Review.   You can also contact the Sullivan Review office. They have them on microfilm.

From Bob Sweeney, records 1750 to 1800

They have some, of course, and you can perhaps get a better idea of what by writing to Dee Tarcza, their president, for more specifics. There are also a lot of materials on two of the Rootsweb sites for this area…..
The one for Sullivan County, my site, and the one for Bradford county, Joyce Tice’s site. You can get to either or both of them through the rootsweb server drop down list at www.rootsweb.com. Just look for the list that shows sites by states and then by counties….
Also, the Bradford County Historical Society on Main Street in Towanda, PA is well run and has many resources of this kind. I do not recall the name of the current president but you can find out easily enough.
Finally, the library and archives at the state university branch at Bloomsburg in Columbia county has an excellent collection for your area of interest.
I hope this helps. Good luck at Penn. If I can help in any other way, let me know.    Bob Sweeney, PhD

I Have been seeking a very allusive connection to the George Ambs family. My GG-Grandmother is Elizabeth E. Ambs. She was married to William E. Crain. She was born, 24Apr 1854 and died 9 May 1908. She Lived (and died) in Monroe TWP, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. She is buried in the Lower Cemetary, Franklindale, Franklin TWP, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. I think that she may perhaps be related to the George Ambs family due to the geographical proximity. Can you provide any link? Thank you.  Blessings,  Fred Schuler
