The Descendants of Lewis and Hannah (Suber) Saxe

The Saxe family has a long history in Sullivan and Bradford Counties. Originally spelled "Sachs", the surname is German in origin, although the original immigrant to this area, Joseph Sachs, born in Germany in 1777, was married to Lucy Yost, born in Maryland in 1781. The attached ancestral trees reveal two descendants branches, splitting off from John and Lucretia "Lucy" (Lauphfrum) Saxe. The Saxes settled initially in the Wilmot community just over the line from sullivan County, then outmigrated throughout the two counties over the following 100 years:

Descendants from Joseph Sachs to Thaddeus Saxe
Descendants from Joseph Sachs to Charles H. Saxe

These two branches come down through different grandsons, Lewis Saxe and Samuel Saxe, respectively. You can learn more about the various Saxe descendants in the Saxe family history at Faces and Families, Group Nine, and otherwise via the use of the search engines on the main site for this page. Just click Return and use the search engines under the map at the top of the new page to do so.

Meanwhile the story on this page will focus on the marriage and children of Lewis Saxe and Hannah Suber.

The church of St. Anthony at Stowell was the scene of a pretty wedding on Tuesday, December 28, at 10 o'clock, when Thaddeus B. Saxe of Wilmot, and Miss Agnes Helen Maguire of Lovelton, were united in marriage.

Rev. Father O'Donnell, pastor of the church, performed the ceremony, which was followed by a nuptial mass. Invitations had been issued and only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties witnessed the ceremony.

Mrs. Virginia Huffman, a niece of the groom, was bridesmaid, while Thaddeus Litzelman of Cherry Mills, was best man. The bride looked exceedingly charming in a blue silk messaline Princess style, with picture hat to match, while the bridesmaid wore a blue silk made Princess with hat to match. Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. Saxe took the evening train for a seeing tour to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Into their new home they will take a large number of useful and costly gifts, tokens of the regard and esteem in which they are held by their many friends
