Subject: Elizabeth McNeal Death Record
I am not optimistic that we will find a death record for that time period
in the German church records for Sullivan County. I have, however,
examined the Peace Church records
at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasulliv/churches/PeaceChurchRecords.htm, also on our site.
There are many references to a family headed by Samuel and Susanna "McNiel" or "McNeal". Susanna
died on January 1, 1865 at the age of 74 and we can presume that her husband
was of at least a comparable age. I would not at all be surprised to find
out, although I do not know this, that Susanna's surname at birth
was a Germanic one. That is both because the early Germans and Irish
in the area were close to one another and often intermarried, but
also because the children of Susanna and Samuel seem to have married into
other German families and many of them are buried at Old Zion, Peace Church or
Trinity Lutheran, the three local "German" cemeteries.
I can tell from these records that Abraham and Susanna had at least the following children:
(1) an unnamed son who died in 1839 at age 13
(2) a daughter named Emma who had several children with more than one father [some clearly out of wedlock]
(3) a son named Abraham
(4) a daughter whose first name I cannot determine, but she married Elias Hahn and had several children.
I am guessing that Mary Elizabeth McNeal ["McNeil"] was a grandchild of Samuel and Susanna McNeal. She was a child of George McNeal, likely yet another son of Samuel and Susanna.

Howard Saxer Meets Horrible Death as Home Burns Down
Howard Saxer, 62, a farmer residing about two
miles from Colley, just inside the southern Bradford County line, burned to death about 3 o’clock Wednesday morning
when fire destroyed his home.
Finding of a few pieces of bone in the ruins late
yesterday confirmed fears that the man had met a horrible fate.
Saxer and his 18-year-old son David were sleeping
on the second floor of the eight-room house when the blaze started. Mrs. Saxer and a daughter, Elizabeth, were
spending the night with the formers mother, Mrs. Drucilla Eberlin, of New
Albany RD 1, who was ill.
Mr. Saxer awakened first and discovered one side
of the room had been set ablaze by an oil stove which had been left burning to
keep some water hot. He aroused
David. The youth pulled on a pair of
pants and dashed barefooted through the snow a quarter of a mile to the home of
Frank Pond for help.
David thought his father followed him out but
apparently the elder man stayed and tried to fight the fire until it was too
late. When David and neighbors arrived,
he could not be found. The roof had
fallen in and the whole interior was a mass of seething flames.
Dushore firemen were called but it was impossible
to do more than save other buildings. A
shed close to the house burned with it.
Coroner Gerald W. Vickery of Troy was called and
he assisted relatives and friends in search for Mr. Saxer. Chief Harley Hunsinger and other firemen
returned in the afternoon and wet down the ruins so that they could be searched
thoroughly. Finally, after much sifting
they found enough little pieces of bone to about half fill a 10-pound sack.
Coroner Vickery took these to Dr. C.H. DeWan at
the Packer Hospital in Sayre. Dr. DeWan
said it was the worst case of burning he ever had seen. Coroner Vickery said one piece was
identified as a big toe and another as the right little finger of a man. He said there were also several small pieces
that might be from arms and legs.
Accordingly he issued a death certificate. The inquest, he said, will be
held at Colley some time today or tomorrow.
Coroner Vickery said he was told that Mr. Saxer kept the
water hot at night to use occasionally in relieving pain in his feet, both of
which were frozen this winter. He
intended to go to the hospital last Saturday but found it impossible and was
expecting to go some time this week.
Mr. Saxer is survived by his wife; daughter
Elizabeth; four sons, David at home, Harry of New Albany RD1, Clarence of New
Albany RD1 and Ransom of Dushore; three brothers, Newton and Barney of Dushore
and Henry of Eagles Mere; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Schaad of Elmira and Mrs.
Delilah Cox Bowers of Dushore.
