Sugar Ridge is the name the family has always called it, but I don't know if that is official anywhere though. I can't find it called that on any map. The official name of the church now is "The Saint John Neumann Shrine". Formerly it was Saints Philip and James Church of Overton. It was blessed by Saint John Neumann (before he was a saint) way back in 1854, and now is under the care of St. Basil's in Dushore. They still have a mass there, three times a year. The first sunday of July, August and September. We try to get there for one of them, usually the one in September. It is quite difficult to find, espically for anyone not familar with the area. From New Albany go to Overton then onto the dirt roads, about five miles back into the woods. It is somewhat marked, but not very good. If anyone is interested, I can provide more detailed instructions on how to get there.

Although there seem to be some inconsistentcies (name spellings, dates), I've made no attempt to correct anything. What you see is what you get. There are some broken stones and some stones off in one corner. Some are replacements for others.

Editor's Note: This inscription is found on the same stone as that for their daughter, Bridget Leahy, who died in 1848. The inscriptions are very difficult to read due to aging. "Mary Flinn" is the same individual as "Mary F. Leahy" listed below with her own stone. The stone cutter either mislabeled this stone with a death date of 1850 or the inscription is eroded to the point where it is not legible. We know that she actually died in 1859.

* Editor's Note: In January 2009, Edward Kelly of Washington D. C., grandson of Daniel and Mary (Leahy) Kelly, provided the following information on the Leahy surname to Bob Sweeney, his second cousin:

As you know, our great grandmother's surname is Leahy, and not Lahey, even though the surname is misspelled in some records, including some census records. You may recall that the tombstone of our great, great grandparents, Thomas and Mary Flynn Leahy, at the Sugar Ridge, PA cemetery spells correctly their surname as Leahy. Since Thomas and Mary Flynn Leahy died in 1859 and 1861, their tombstone is among the oldest in the cemetery. Thomas's brother Patrick and his family also spell their surname as Leahy.
