THE FREEWILL BAPTIST CHURCH RECORDS

As copied from the original record book by Carol Brotzman in 1994

The data is copied as written, name spelling errors and all!

I would like to dedicate this book to Sadie Atkins Crawford, February 23, 1875 - March 22, 1959, wife of Benjamin Crawford April 18, 1864 - August 20, 1941.    The book was originally compiled by Sadie’s father, Joseph Herman Atkins (March 18, 1836 - May 17, 1878).  Sadie retrieved the book from the hall closet as the church was being torn down by the Lloyd Clapper family.  The Clapper family planned to use the wood as lumber in their barn at Retta, Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, PA.  Sadie gave the book to Alice Grow Sivers before she passed, knowing it would be in safekeeping.

Five marble tablets were in the church at that time, and were etched with the names of people from all over the area that must have donated money to keep the church going in lean years. Many of the names were not local, but appeared to have been associated with other branches of the Freewill Baptist churches throughout the area. Only one of the tablets is now known to be kept locally, and I do not have a photo of this tablet. Wish I did, it is beautiful.

Historian's note: Adolphus Culver (May 1839 - November 26, 1864) died from injuries in service of his country during the Civil War and is buried along side his brother Timothy Culver in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery

Adolphus was married to Cynthia Hardy. Cynthia remarried October 27, 1868 to Reuben Madison/Mattison. She remained on the farm where she had live with Adolphus.  Timothy Culver (May 10, 1836 - June 07, 1865) was married to Catherine Potter. They were sons of James C and Margaret French Culver.

James Jarvis Culver (May 17, 1840 - January 11, 1922), another brother who served in the Civil War was so grief stricken over the death of his brother Timothy, since he was the one that convinced him to enlist, he married his widow Catherine E Potter Culver. This is the same Pennsylvania Century farm in Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, PA now owned by Carol and Dale Brotzman. [http://www.joycetice.com/families/culver.htm]

The following are highlights from the record book directly pertaining to the Beaver Meadows Church.

October 22, 1867: J C Culver was deciding to leave the Freewill Baptist on his own account.  They were trying to convince him to stay.

* Historian's note:  I don't believe he stayed there.  He was listed on the Beaver Meadows register at the same time. This would be James C Culver who was married to Margaret French. They are buried at Beaver Meadows.

October 1, 1869 (Friday night.)   The regular meeting was not held on account of the dedication of the church at Beaver Meadow on the following Sabbath.

*  Historians note:  The following Sabbath would have been October 3, 1869.

July 14, 1877: Miles Bennett was elected a trustee for the Freewill Baptist Church and was active at Beaver Meadows. However, Miles never appears on the official membership list at Beaver Meadows.

John Harsh and Thomas Hughes are trustees and officers for the Freewill Baptist Church but are also active at Beaver Meadows and buried there.
