FORKSTON   CEMETERY   ASSOCIATION

TO THE PUBLIC

1890

The increase of the population of Forkston and the fast filling up of our grave yard has made it a question where to bury our dead.  The failure of not having a suitable and a pleasant resting place for our dead, notwithstanding the hallowed associations cherished for those of our relatives and friends taken from us by death.

Then comes the great necessity for a cemetery to meet the wants which has been sorely felt by the people of Forkston and vicinity.

We have undertaken the work of founding a cemetery for the last resting place of the dead of this community.

All that has been done, or remains to be done by the association will be a failure to make Forkston Cemetery what it should be.  The pride of our place: unless an earnest interest is taken by our citizens generally.  The purchase of lots and their improvement will help to complete the great work undertaken.

In proportion as the lots are improved and beautified will the cemetery grounds become attractive.  As parent, wife, husband, child, or friends are placed in the last resting place, will the strong affections of the heart center there.  Will we delay to make pleasant and attractive the place which is to make familiar associations the dearest and most cherished of our lives.  If we have been so immersed in the busy pursuits of life, as to have forgotten the duty, we owe to the dead, may that reflection no longer rest on this community.

Sad, though it may be, yet in that sadness what tender associations, what kindling memories, what cheering thoughts, what Christian hope, may be awakened in the breasts of those who shall hereafter visit this silent resting place of the dead.

Long may this enclosure be preserved undesecrated by rude hands.

Hither let even the idle and thoughtless come to learn the lesson of their own mortality from the eloquent but unobtrusive teachings of the grave.

In this spirit we commend the Forkston Cemetery in the hope that it will be a cherished institution.  The purchaser of a lot obtains his title perpetuity.  The whole tract being devoted for burial purposes only.  Affectionate relatives may beautify and ornament their special lots by shrubbery and monuments, subject to the rules and regulations of the association, so that the views will attract the visitors to this new city of the dead, while they sleep their final sleep in so beautiful a spot.
