Fairmount Cemetery Transcribed by our local cemetery research team See the grave marker for Samuel Rogers and the Rogers family, original settlers in the area, at the end of this page. This photo is courtesy of Ernie Hatton. In October 2009, Susan Fleming Fitzpatrick, great great granddaughter of John R. Fleming (1827-1907) pointed out that we had overlooked several Fleming family listings in our initial trasncription of this site. Mike Clarke went to the cemetery to recover these names and also took several photographs of the Fleming family graves located there. Mike's photos are linked to the Flemings where indicated below. There is also a group overview of the Fleming family graves at the end of this page. You can find a fuller discussion of this family at this Fleming Dialogue Stream. Mike also photographed the grave marker for Jacob L. Snyder and his two wives of the same exact name !!--Sarah A. Huckell [see footnote for more information]. We are most grateful to Susan and Mike for their efforts here. In June 2010, June Howard
contributed several pictures of several tombstones and markers from this cemetery. We have linked these pictures
in the listing below. Naturally, we are much appreciative of June's efforts in this regard. She is a descendant of the Rowe,
Molyneux and Tomlinson families of Sullivan County, and is related by marriage to the Vough family. You can learn
more about these families at Finally, beginning in March 2013, the Sullivan County Historical Society (SCHS) provided us with a list of updated list entries as well as several obituaries. We have posted and linked these entries in crimson below. We are grateful to the SCHS for this contribution and information. Latest update: February 2019 |

* Editor's Note: Jacob married in turn two women named Sarah Ann Huckell. The first was the daughter of William Huckell and Sarah Eldred (married 10/22/1826). The second was the daughter of John Huckell and Ellen Little (married 9/17/1829) [see obituary below]. John and William Huckell were brothers, sons of Thomas and Sarah (Lambert) Huckell. William Huckell moved to Cawker County, Kansas, in 1870 in a colonization venture organized with his brother John and several others. Jacob Snyder was part of the settlement group, but he returned to Pennsylvania after a brief time spent in the wilds of Kansas.
Here is an obituary for the second Sarah Huckell, which reflects more of the historical context of this family:
Chino Champion
Chino CA
c. December 31, 1923
Sarah Ann Huckell was born in Forksville, Pennsylvania, in 1831, and died in Chino, California, December 28, 1923, at the age of 92 years and 5 months.
She was married to Jacob L. Snyder January 3, 1863, so that they celebrated their golden wedding more than eleven years ago. The only child born to them died [in] infancy.
Mr. Snyder was twice married and both of his wives bore the same name, Sarah Ann Huckell, being first cousins. Two children were born to the first marriage, a little boy who died in infancy, and a son who lived to be 60 years of age. This son left two daughters who are living and who have four children.
Mr. Snyder's first wife died after a married life of only six years, and the good woman who has just closed her life became a real mother to the motherless boy.
She was destined, however, to a still wider field of motherhood. The death of the wife of Mr. Snyder's younger brother, Christian, a long-time honored and most highly respected citizen of this community, left two small children, a little girl of two years and a baby brother, for somebody to love and care for. She took them in her home and heart. The little girl, now Mrs. Sadie Woodhead, lived in the home she returned to be with him. The for three years [sic, see below *] when on the reestablishment of her father's home little boy, Lyman, remained a a member of his uncle's family. It is an interesting coincidence that is is just three year since Mrs. Woodhead succeeded in prevailing upon her uncle and aunt to leave Pennsylvania and come to be with her in her California home. She was permitted to care for her aunt in her age and feebleness just the same number of years that her aunt so tenderly cared for her in her helpless childhood.
* Editor's Note: Per Nancy Spencer, it is believed that the print type was jumbled in this part of the original obituary and this is what the pritner meant to say: The little girl, now Mrs. Sadie Woodhead, lived in the home for three years when, on the re-establishment of her father's home, she returned to be with him. The little boy, Lyman, remained as a member of his uncle's family.
Mrs. Snyder was of Scotch-English descent, her forbears having come to Pennsylvania when it was an almost unbroken wilderness. Her great grand-father was an officer in the Revolutionary army.
Prior to her marriage she was a teacher in the public schools.
She united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Forksville, Pa., in early childhood. She was a member of that church continuously to the time of her death. She was a Sunday school teacher practically all her life, and received a medal from the State Sunday School Association of Pennsylvania for fifty years of continuous service as a teacher.
Some time after coming to California she suffered a paralytic stroke and has been a great sufferer since. About thirty-six hours before her death she fell into the sleep from which she did not waken here. She literally fell asleep in Jesus and quietly and without a struggle slipped away to be with Him.
Mrs. Snyder was a woman of strong character; she and her husband were permitted to live together in loving comradeship for nearly sixty-one years; in her long life she touched and influenced for good many people ; she has entered into a well earned rest.
"Servant of God well done, The funeral service was held in the funeral chapel on Monday, December 31, and was attended by a very large company of sympathizing friends. Noticeable in the company was a very large number of young men, testifying by their presence their high regard for Mr. and Mrs. Snyder and Mrs. Woodhead and her sons. Of the immediate family there were the husband, J. L. Snyder, Mrs. Woodhead and her three sons, and Mrs. Christian Snyder.
Thy glorious warefare's past;
The battle's fought, the race is run
And thou art crowned at last."
The body is on its way back to Forksville, Pa., accompanied by Mrs. Christian Snyder, to rest in the family burial plot. The sympathy of a very large circle of friends goes out especially to Mr. Snyder
