Originally known as the
Whipple/Fuller Cemetery Or
It is located on Taylor
Hill, Auburn Township Susquehanna County, PA.
The records were loaned to me, Carol Hoose Brotzman,
by Mrs. Anna Labzentis Bolles August 22, 1999. Anna, and her deceased
husband Robert Bolles (1926 – 1998) obtained the records through Robert’s
adopted father, Leo Bolles (1887 – 1959). He was a noted early historian of the
area, kept diaries and notes on just about everything. **He was in possession of
the original documents. These documents show the original owners of the land
were Jonas Fuller and Cyrus Whipple, thus the name Whipple or
** Editor's Note: You can see more
pictures and learn more about the Bolles
family at The Leo Bolles Collection.
There is also a
comprehensive site on the Fuller family developed by Joe Payne, which you can access at Fullers Pond Family Tree.
The land recordings were as
follows:
Cyrus Whipple 287 degrees
Jonas Fuller 369 degrees

The grounds were to contain

CRAWFORD,
Benjamin C. (December 6, 1793)
1794-1885 (March 18)
As
a Crawford Family Historian, I can say Benjamin C. (Maybe for Carpenter)
Crawford was born in Wyalusing to Benjamin Noah and Olive (Olivia) Carpenter
Crawford December 6, 1793 and passed at Beech Grove,
CRAWFORD,
Catherine (Bunnell), (March 13) 1797 – 1892 (February 20)
In
regards to these Crawford’s I have some interesting newspaper articles I would
like to include:
FOUR SCORE AND TEN - a reprint from newspaper article originally
published ca 1882.
Benjamin C. (Carpenter) Crawford,
father of John Crawford late of
He was drafted in the war of 1812 and was excused from service by reason of the influence of his employer with the captain of the company. Old Joseph Camp was the captain of the company with whom many of his associates went to war. (Likely a relative of Lydia Ann Camp b 1825 who married George M. Crawford b 1825, a brother of Betsey Ann who married Squire L.W. Clark, Leonard’s Great-grandparents)
He has been married
twice, and has his wife last yet living with him at his home in Auburn twp.,
His father (Benjamin Noah Crawford)
and mother (Olive Carpenter) were born in
learn his trade before he was seventeen years old. He has not
taken a drink of liquor in forty-four years and had been temperate in his habits before that time. He
commenced chewing tobacco at the age of eighteen and has used it moderately
ever since. He was advised to use it by old Dr. Hayes for a pain in his stomach
occasioned by the sewing of shoes. In those days, viz. In 1813 pegs were not
used in making shoes. (An interesting comment. Apparently the shoemaker held
the shoe against his stomach while shaping the leather and sewing it)
The old man has a remarkable memory, is keen and witty and
remarkable in many respects.

ROBERTS,
Nelson C. (Corington) 11 September
1852 - 9 December 1908
Montrose Republican
Montrose, PA
February 1908
Editor's Note: Clipping found in the Scrapbooks of Lou Mericle cites this obituary from Montrose in an unidentified local newspaper, likely published in Wyalusing.
Death From Asphyxiation.
The Montrose Republican says Nelson C. Roberts died at his home in Montrose, Wednesday morning, as a result of escaping coal gas.
Sunday night the chimney in the Roberts residence "burned out" and salt and other substances were thrown on the fire.
It is supposed that during the night the gas accumulated as a result and Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were both nearly suffocated while they slept. Mr. Roberts has been an invalid for the past nine years and was unable to recover, despite the efforts of physicians, and did not regain consciousness. While Mrs. Roberts' condition was serious, with some effort she was revived and has entirely recovered.
Mr. Roberts came to Montrose from Silvara, Bradford County, eleven years ago. For several years, he was employed in the quarrying business with L. P. Loomis, having been an expert stone cutter and quarryman. Nine years ago he was stricken with creeping paralysis, which for several years has left him a helpless invalid. During these years he has born his affliction with Christian patience and fortitude, sustained by the loving devotion of his wife, who ministered to his every need and at the same time condcuted a boarding house as a means of gaining a livelihood.
He was born at Beech Grove, September 11, 1852, making him just 56 years of age. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Rifenbury, and one son, Fremont, both of Montrose; also one brother, Eugene Roberts, and two sisters, Mrs. Jane Love and Mrs. F. M. Baldwin of West Auburn.
Prayer was offered at the home on Friday evening at 7:30 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. H. B. Benedict, of the Methodist church, who also conducted the services at the West Auburn church Saturday at 12:30 noon.
His wife Amanda NEWMAN 16 April 1857 - 8 October 1938
Amanda
married second to Alex Stevens.
Mrs. Alex. Stevens Died Sunday After A Brief Illness
Resident of Montrose for Over Forty Years; Was Ill Two Days.
Mrs. Amanda E. Stevens, aged 83 years, died in the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Eva Londrigan, 38 Cherry street, Sunday morning, Oct. 9, 1938, at five
o’clock, Mrs. Stevens was ill but two days. Deceased was one of the town’s
best-known residents and had lived here for forty years. She was a daughter of
Josiah and Mary Tinney Newman and was born in Williamsport on April 16, 1856.
She became a member of the Methodist church when eight years of age and her
entire life was symbolic of the finest embodiment of the Christian faith. She
was a member of the Montrose Methodist Episcopal church and of the Priscilla
class in the Sunday school. She was also a member of Mary Rebekah Lodge. Mrs.
Stevens was twice married, her first husband, Nelson Roberts, dying in 1908,
and her second husband, Alexander Stevens, dying in 1932. She is survived by
her daughter, one son, Fremont Roberts, of Susquehanna; two sisters, Miss Angie Loomis,
Easton and Mrs. Ella Kimble, Wilkes-Barre, and two granddaughters, Mrs. J.
Melvin Kelly and Miss Helen Roberts, Montrose. The funeral was held on Tuesday
morning at 10 o’clock at the Londrigan residence, her pastor the Rev. Horace E.
Weavers, officiating. Interment was in the Beech Grove cemetery. A.H. Bowen was
in charge of funeral arrangements.

Carrie Cogswell was the teacher at the Bolles school in 1887. She was the daughter of Jarvis Batles Cogswell and Caroline "Carrie" Louisa James. She was born in Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, PA on November 03, 1867. She passed away November 14, 1952 in Sharon, PA. Carrie was married September 27, 1900 in West Auburn, Susquehanna County, PA to Martin B. Rohrer. He was the son of Christian Rohrer and Emma Maria Buckwalter.
I'M GOING BACK
TO THE OLD HOME TOWN,
TO THE FRIENDS
WHERE LONG AGO,
WHERE THE
TUSCARORA WINDS ALONG AND WILD FLOWERS GROW,
WHERE WE LOVED
TO FISH IN THE KINNEY POND,
OR DOWN BY OLD
ROBERTS MILL,
WHEN WE ALL
BELONGED TO THE BAREFOOT GROUP,
AS WE WANDERED
O'ER DALE AND HILL.
THE DEVIL'S
HALF ACRE WAS ONE OF OUR HAUNTS,
AND WE LOVED
THAT ROCKY PLACE,
I'VE OFTEN
WISHED, AS THE YEARS FLEW BY,
WE COULD KEEP
IN THAT SMALL PLACE
OUR
DISSIPATIONS WERE SINGING SCHOOL,
AND A SLEIGH
RIDE NOW AND THEN.
AN
OYSTER SUPPER WAS SUCH A TREAT AND A SPELLING BEE THRILLS US AGAIN.
AND SOMETIMES
WE DREW A BIG BOB SLED
TO THE TOP OF
OLD JAMES HILL
WE ALL PILED
IN, AND LUCKY WE WERE, IF WE FINISHED WITHOUT A SPILL
AND I'LL NEVER
FORGET OUR CHRISTMAS TREES
AND HOW LOVELY
HOPES WOULD FADE
WHEN THE
LOVELY DOLL WITH CURLY HAIR, WENT TO SOME OTHER MAID
THE LACEY
STORE WAS A MEETING PLACE
I THOUGHT IT
FINE AND DANDY
WHEN I WAS
SENT FOR GROCERIES AND GIVEN AN EGGS WORTH OF CANDY
THE OLD SCHOOL
HOUSE COULD TELL GREAT TALES
AND WE LOVED
THIS CHURCH NO END
AND NEIGHBORS
STOOD READY DAY OR NIGHT, TO COME TO THE AID OF A FRIEND.
WEST AUBURN
KNEW NO MOTOR CARS, PHONES, MOVIES, OR RADIO.
AND THE HORSES
PLOUGHED THRU THE HEAVY MUD,
WITH A GAIT
THAT WAS SURE BUT SLOW.
THE OLD GROUP
HAS GATHERED HERE AND THERE.
AND SOME HAVE
WANDERED FAR,
AND SO MANY
NEAR AND DEAR TO US HAVE PEACEFULLY "CROSSED THE BAR."
BUT TO US THEY
HAVE LEFT A HERITAGE
OF COURAGE AND
FAITH AND LOVE,
OF HIGH IDEALS
AND SACRIFICE
ALL WEALTH AND
FAME ABOVE.
AND OUR IS THE
DUTY TO CARRY ON, THEIR MEMORIES TO NEVER MAR
TO SERVE AS
THEY SERVED, AND BRIGHTEN EACH DAY
THE CORNER
WERE WE ARE
