I find this story interesting,

This was when Gwen and Tolise Pickett were very young, too young to drive. Gwen was born in 1948 and Tolise in 1947. Grandma Ena Wootton Pickett died in 1961 so you know how young those girls were.

Gwen Pickett tells me that she and Tolise would take Grandma Una to church, Gwen would prop herself up with pillows so she could see over the steering wheel to steer, and Tolise would work the pedals on that old 1940 Buick. Gwen said, "We never had an accident, everyone just gave us room"!

Pickett, Marcus J.(James) (July 6) 1852 - 1942 (February 18)

Susie E. Bond (Susan Edith) (June 16) 1857 - 1930 (Feb 7)

Son of Avery and Eliza Estabrooks, daughter of  Catherine Brink and Jacob Bond. Marcus and Susie married Dec 11, 1877.

*  Historians note;  Marcus was born in Auburn township,  Susquehanna  County, Pa. His funeral book records he had a sister  Miss Jennie Pickett.  Susie was born at Brinktown, but her address is given  as LaGrange when they married.  They were the  pillars  of the  church.  Both being buried in the shadow of the church  they served so faithfully. Marcus held every office in the church, and at the time of his death was an honorary trustee.  They were  the parents of 2 children, Jennie May and Harry Jacob Pickett.

Funeral of Marcus Pickett

The funeral of Marcus Pickett was held at his home in Stevens Township February 21, 1942. Rev. Deloss Smith of Camptown was the officiating clergyman. Rev. Smith commented briefly upon the great service the deceased had rendered to his church and community during his long and useful life. Mr. Pickett was born in Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, July 6,1952, and removed to Bradford County with his parents, the late Avery and Eliza (Easterbrooks) Pickett, at an early age. On December 31, 1877, he joined Susie Bond of La Grange, PA., in marriage. This was a happy union that lasted over fifty-three years and was terminated by the death of Mrs. Pickett February 6, 1930. This union was blessed with two children, a daughter Jennie who died in childhood, and a son Harry J. who lives on the homestead. Besides his son, three grandchildren survive the deceased: Mrs. Evelyn Stalford of Endicott, N.Y., Private Harry Clyde Pickett, Troop C, 14th Calvary, and Eldred at home. One great grandchild, Ronald Stalford of Endicott. Early in life Mr. Pickett united with the Methodist Church at Beaver Meadows and has been a faithful member since that time. He has held every lay office of that church and for a number of years was Superintendent of the Sunday school. At the time of his death he was an honorary trustee. He was also a member of the Shiloh Grange at West Auburn, PA., and held in high esteem by that order.  Interment was made at Beaver Meadows Cemetery, with in the shadow of the church he served so long and well. The Grange had charge of the committal services. Music was furnished by Mr. And Mrs. Claude Carter who were fellow Grangers. Contributed by Carol Brotzman

* Historians note:  James Sharer married Caroline Pickett  daughter  of Samuel and Nancy Avery Pickett according to  the  Bennett History  and the Avery History.  That would make her a sister  to Marcus Pickett's father Ezekiel Pickett, and a brother  to Anson and Avery Pickett that married Sarah Bennett daughter of Ferris and  Nancy Black Bennett.   Confused Yet, I am.  Yet another source  records the Aunt Caroline that raised Samuel was Caroline Smith, a sister to his deceased wife Mary.  In any case, whichever Caroline married James Sharer. Samuel's  mother, Mary Smith died in child birth at  Clapper  Hill August 1861.  Her new son didn't survive either

Notes on Florence from her granddaughter

Yes, she was my "Grandma Florence"!  She was a dynamo.   She had so much musical talent, could play by ear and read music. She loved her four boys so much and was so proud of her grandchildren.  I had never seen those early pictures of her.   She taught me to embroider and  took very good care of Grandad.   I loved to go up the Grandad's house after supper and sit with them listening to the radio or in the summer sit out on the porch swing.  If Aunt Wavie and Aunt Annis were visiting, we'd all sing hymns loudly.  Grandad would laugh and say the cows would give sour milk in the morning.   Sue Bennett Sagrati

*** Potter, Ridley (Riley)  died  April 18, 1886  age 82   (1804)

Loraina Palmer   died April 21, 1886  age 79   (1807)

The dates are from the obituary in the REPORTER JOURNAL

            They married September 5, 1833

There  is  no record of them in the cemetery plot  book,  however records found in the Montrose Historical Society support they are buried  here.  The REPORTER JOURNAL on May 6, 1886 carried  their obituaries, and the Commemorative Biographies of Northeast  Pennsylvania published in 1900 has a biography on Thomas Potter  that states  his parents were buried at Clapper Hill 1885.   The  year was  in error.  They died one week apart.   The  article  records

the following family members;  Isaac who served in the Civil  War and  was  killed July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, Mary  the  wife  of Henry  Hall,  Thomas, Abraham was killed in the Civil  War  while serving in the Army, Alice who was Mrs James Bunnell, and  Ester.  Ester died Sept 18, 1864 age 13 years 11 months and 28 days.  She was buried in the Stevensville Cemetery. Her brother Thomas,  and his  wife Sally, who died at the age of 61 years March  11,  1893 were  buried there when they passed.  Thomas Potter, the  son  of Riley  enlisted at Towanda in the Co. I 51st P. V. I.  under  Col Thomas  Parker.  He married May 1, 1867 to Mrs. Sally Sharer Williams, daughter of William and Elizabeth Featherbay Sharer. Sally was  the  widow of Francis Williams.  Thomas was  buried  in  the Stevensville  Cemetery with no stone.  His military  standard  is adjacent to his wife's stone. He was born May 1, 1839.  I have  no death date.

Historians  note: Riley W. and Isaac Potter enlisted  together  at Towanda, Pennsylvania August 22, 1862.   Riley deserted April 15, 1863.  After all he was an old man, and it was a lot of stress to  handle.  His son Abram was killed during this time he was  absent without  leave.  Riley reenlisted and served his second hitch  in the 57th Regt. Pa Vol.  A unit made up of old men and  deserters.  He enlisted in the 57th May 28, 1863, not long after Abram  died.  After the war Riley returned home.  Riley was listed in the Pennsylvania  1870 Auburn Township census, age 66 born New York,  his wife Lorania, age 56 born New York.

Abram  Potter,  son of Riley served in Company A,  151st  Pa Vol..  He  died  at Windmill Point, Virginia May  10,  1863  from wounds received in battle. The  son Isaac R Potter was a casualty of the Civil  War  at age  29,  killed at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. At one  point  both father  and  son served in the 141st infantry,  Pa.  Vol.   Isaac received the "BADGE OF HONOR".

The  brothers may be buried near their sister, Mary Hall  in  lot  134     This would be placing the Civil  War  Casualties  in relative proximity with the Culver boys on the upper side.   No  records  record where any of this family  is  buried in the Beaver  Meadows.  There is a broken headstone for Mary Hall  and Luella, her child.
