*Historians note: Josephine, or Aunt Joey as everyone called her, was known as the matriarch of Sabbath School. She taught for over 46 years. Douglas Clapper and Jenella Ryan both tell me if the mood struck her on a Saturday afternoon, she would gather up all the kids and serve them the biggest and best cookies you ever ate. Then she would have Sunday school lessons even if it were Saturday. Her husband Joel was a handyman for the community. He was even hired to repair the church steeple that disappeared in his care!
One Hundred Years Ago in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania March 28 (1898/1998) West Auburn - Prof. E.L. Clapper's concert at the West Auburn Hall, was well received, and highly spoken of, although the class was mostly beginners. They were nobly assisted by Mrs. B.W. Wood and Mrs. George Wakeman, of East Springville, and Mr. and Mrs. Joel Carter, of Opposition. Miss Angie Parker did the organ and was complimented by the Prof. for her exactness and faithfulness.

* Historians note regarding information on the origination of the Carter families: The original ancestors were Rev. Samuel and Eunice Brooks Carter. His son was Samuel Carter 1686/1687 – 1738 and his wife Dorothy Wilder. Next came Samuel Carter and his wife Jemima Horton, next was Samuel and Charity Van Northstand Carter. The next in lineage was Hiram Daly 1770-1863 and his wife Hannah Daly 1782-1862. They were the parents of at least two children with families involved in our church. Jonas Carter and Theron Carter. We will first follow the lineage of Jonas (1803-1871). Jonas married Matsey Mowry. They were the parents of seven children. I will only record the three children associated with Beaver Meadows. Theron Carter (1805-1887) married Permilla L. (1810-1850). Their son John Hamilton Carter 1827-1906 married Sarah Evans. They have three children involved with the families here at Beaver Meadows. Joel listed above, Mary (Mrs. Alonzo Parker). Her descendants include Donna Tewksbury Bennett. Their son Stanley married Mary Atkins. Stanley and Mary Carter were the parents of five children. Their daughter Elva married Stanley Hall listed later in this cemetery. Harriet Carter married Joseph Benninger. They have many indirect ties to Beaver Meadows. Hannah Carter (1833-1890) married Calvin McLaud. This is a major lineage connection. They had the following children: Abram McLaud, Harriet (Mrs. James King), Samuel (Daniel Otis) McLaud, Matsey Ann McLaud, Lois Ella (Mrs. Dutton Cobb), Jonas P McLaud, Ida C. (Mrs. Merritt Comstock), Libbie (Elizabeth) (Mrs. Frank Bunnell Place), Lucy Lucinda (Mrs. Norval Bennett), George M. McLaud, Marion C. McLaud, Eva T. McLaud and Ziba McLaud. Most all are connected to the church and or the cemetery here. This is only a brief history of the many connections to Carter here at Beaver Meadows. Rev. Ruth Carter Breitweiser, a former Pastor is connected through Frank and Theodosia Davis Carter of this same Carter family.

Helen B. ( Loretta Brown) (June 26) 1906 – 1988 (June 13)
Clifford was born the son of Orell DeWitt and Lena Hulda Smith. He married Helen Brown the daughter of Frank and Lucy Coolbaugh Brown. There is an FLT Marker on the gravesite. Helen and Clifford were both active in the church here at Beaver Meadows. Helen and Jenella Ryan worked with M.Y. F. and Sunday school. Clifford is even noted for leaving one of his "memento's", an empty aluminum beer can, in the church steps when they were being laid. It has been carried over and replaced in the new steps and wall at least two times. I know, I tried to throw it out as garbage! There is a window in the church bearing their names. It was purchased and dedicated in 1989.

Douglas Frank Repsher Clapper, age 79, of Clapper Hill, Laceyville, Pa., passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013. Born July 17, 1934 on Clapper Hill, he is the son of the late Daniel Clapper Sr. and Sylvia (Repsher) Clapper. He graduated from Laceyville High School as a member of the class of 1952. In school he was a member of The Road Patrol, baseball team, senior dramatics, and yearbook staff. Doug began helping his father and grandfather on the family farm at an early age; and eventually, along with his father, brother, and nephew made it his livelihood. He married Virginia "Gin" Kelley on June 19, 1954. Together they have three daughters, Vickie, Shelly, and Joan. Doug found great joy in his family, and especially enjoyed the weekly gathering of the whole family for Sunday dinner. He is a member of the Beaver Meadows United Methodist Church where members recently honored him for his many years of dedicated service to the church's many projects. Doug is well known in the area for his 54 years of playing country music. Throughout the years he played with various bands such as The Ridge Runners, Donna and the Country Gentlemen, Queen of Hearts, and Northern Harmony. His love of music and talent for playing was passed down to his children and grandchildren. Doug may be even more famous for his sense of humor. He never left home without a joke. Doug is survived by his wife of 59 years Gin Clapper; his three daughters Vickie (Rick) Ellis, Shelly (Steve) Ciprich, Joan (Dan) DeGaramo; grandchildren Matt (Lori) Ciprich, Meredith (Jared) Sadlowski, Jessi (John) Burgess, Jordy Ellis, Heath, David, and Mitchell DeGaramo; great-grandchildren John and Lola Burgess, Hayden and Ava Sadlowski, Atleigh, Delanie, and Dylan Ciprich; brother Denny Clapper; sisters Donna Harvey and Madge (Allen) Kershner; sisters-in-law Rita Clapper, Louise Kelley, Marlene Kelley, Linda (Mark) White, Cheryl (Jim) Newhart, Kathy (Jim) Cantone, Deb (Greg Johnson) Dymond; and brothers-in-law Bob (Pat) Kelley, Chancey (Cassie) Kelley, and Dale (Tammy) Kelley. Doug's generosity was known to everyone who met him. He has always been the "go-to guy" on the hill to his friends and neighbors. Over the years he organized many benefits for folks in the community, and if he wasn't organizing, he was participating. To continue his legacy of helping others, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Doug Clapper Memorial Fund. Funds will be shared between The Abbi Brown Family and The Makenzie Vanderpool family. These two little gals are battling rare and difficult diseases. Three-year old Abbi is battling Leigh's Syndrome (mitochondrial disease). Four-year old Makenzie is just beginning her fight against a newly diagnosed brain tumor. Rev. Babcock held Professor Elmer Clapper’s from the church. He was the son of John and Harriet Culver Clapper and she the daughter of Joseph and Susan Cottrell Marbaker. She however spelled Marbacher the old fashioned way on the headstone. They were married November 16, 1870. Their children were: Harry, Susan. They adopted Carrie Fargo, who was known as Angie. She was the daughter of William and Carrie Jolly Fargo whose mother died young. Their son Harry married Bertha King, Sally or Susan married Raymond Pratt, the owned the shoe store in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. I suspect Angie never married as family obituaries refer to her, as a Miss. Elmer was handicapped due to the loss of one arm, however he was a very talented musician. He was a choir boss here at Beaver Meadows. Elmer is listed as a retired resident of Opposition in 1900. Two small mother and father stones are on the backside of the headstone
I find Julia E. Clapper, daughter of Elmer Clapper married William A. Fargo September 25, 1899 in the Rush Church records They were married by Rev. Gorisse at the Rush Methodist Parsonage. The LDS has the same year except they record September 28, 1899. They must have adopted her also.
From the Pearl Tyler collection Elmer L. Clapper
Elmer L. Clapper died at his home in Silvara, on Friday August 28, 1914, after an illness of some months, his ailment developing into Brights disease. After prayer at his home the following Sunday morning his remains were taken to the Beaver Meadows Church where services conducted by the Re. A. A. Babcock, were held, the church being more than filled with relatives and friends met to pay their last tribute to the departed. The internment being in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Clapper, whose age was 63 years had passed most of his life in the vicinity of Clapper Hill. Evincing in early life a talent for music, he made a specialty of conducting singing schools and holding conventions, many years of being successful and doing much to advance the civilization of music in the localities in which he taught. He had been engaged in farming, but desiring to lead a less strenuous life, had sold his property and moved to Silvara where he was beginning to enjoy an ease he had never had when he was stricken down. He was much handicapped in the performance of manual labor by the loss of an arm, but by dint of determined ambition, he was always occupied by the duties of one kind or another. There survive Mrs. Clapper, his widow, one son Harry, a merchant in Silvara and a daughter Miss Susie at home. Contributed by Carol Brotzman

West Auburn - Prof.

Mary Schweitzers recorded down conversations notes from many local folks This one I think was from an interview with Lena Smith Clapper.
Harry C. Clapper owned the big general store appearing near the center of the photo and he resided with his family in the apartment upstairs.
It is believed that the old picture with the huge crowd was taken as the crowd was gathering for one of Clapper's famous International Harvester Days, a time when farmers from surrounding area would come to Silvara and look over new farm machinery. The store was later operated by his son Lloyd J., then Derwood Davis, Andrew Voda, and for the past eight years Ralph Stanton.
Prior to 1914 when the road was paved.
The old structure at the extreme right in the photo is the oldest business building in Silvara and was originally the town's sole mercantile establishment. It was operated by Walter Whitney. Mr. Bennett recalls that Silvara at one time had a Liberty Ť Pole, just around the ?????????? no more of the article 1968 Ť

An old newspaper clipping of Hettie Moore:
It is with feelings of regret that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Cobb, who passed away at the home of her son in law A. D. Steiger on Thursday evening, October 31, '12 (1912), aged 78 years, Mrs. Cobb had sought from her earliest days to have her life under the sway and dominance of God's spirit. One of the many wonderful thing about her was the remarkable combination, the perfect purity of her piety and the sweet attractiveness by which she unconsciously drew men and women under her magic influence. Transparent as a sunbeam, in her spirit seemed to angelic to keep within the limits of her frail body, and many times her face was as the face of Moses when she talked to God. She was not afraid of death---on the contrary she longed to get "where she enjoyed rest" as she often expressed it. She lived a quiet uneventful life ever sustained by the conclusions of Christ and strengthened by the comfort of God. So along the well worn, sunlit pathway of lowly service she walked the valley of peace and finally entered the 'valley of the shadow of death' with a shout of victory upon her lips. A short service was held at the home Monday morning prior to starting for the family cemetery at Beaver Meadows. Her pastor had charge of the services at home, church and cemetery. Cottrell, Esther Brigham , died December 25, 1874; age 89 years, 8 months, 2 days. This makes her born about 1783. She was the wife of John Cottrell. Both John and Esther were born in Rhode Island. We do not know where he is buried for sure. Diane Lawson records he died September 14, 1862 . He is probably buried in the Fowler Hill Cemetery as Beaver Meadows was just getting started as a burial ground. They were the parents of Thankful and Susan married the Marbaker brothers, Edward and Joseph Marbaker. The upright headstone records Farewell mother, fare thee well? Ayres of Elmira made the headstone.
A dairy entry from Hettie Marbaker Moore records the maiden name of Esther Brigham

We stayed at Tom's sleeped in the car. Got up about 6:30 had breakfast. Ceal and Ella and Emma come. Ceal and Ella went back to Miles (place) but came back for lunch. We had a prayer at the house at 1 o'clock and service at too at the church. We went back to Harry's for a while started home, stopped and talked with Dent (may be Bent, I can't quite make it out) Cobb.(Should be Benton Cobb) The undertaker man was Shults, the Preacher man was a Rev. Thomas. Grate grandma Marbaker mom (I think, it's not real clear) was Esther Brigham Cottrel so Ella B said.

*** Culver, Adolphus C. Adolphus was a corporal in the US ARMY serving in the Civil War with Company C in the 203rd division. He was the son of James C and Margaret French Culver. According to the Culver genealogy he was born July 24, 1838. Census records May 1839. He married January 14, 1860 to Cynthia Hardy, the daughter of Philander and Margaret Clapper Hardy. To this union was born at least two children. Phinia, buried here at Beaver Meadows and Margaret who was born in August 1860. Margaret married Walter Scott. They were the parents of Clema Scott. Margaret and Walter Scott moved on to California where they died.
Adolphus Culver, a Civil War casualty died November 26, 1864 at the Base Hospital In Virginia aged 26 years, 4 months and 3 days. His body was brought home for burial directly behind the church.
After a few years Cynthia remarried to the widower Reuben Mattison or Madison (born 1818 in Rhode Island and died in this area before 1893). Reuben signed the Tuscarora Rush Religious Compact. His first wife was named Sarah according to the 1850 Tuscarora Township census. . She must have passed young for him to marry Cynthia Hardy Culver October 27, 1868. Reuben and Sarah resided in the area of where Joe and Mary Matier reside today. They were the parents of at least four sons and a daughter named Abigail that married Daniel MaGee. She died February 23, 1880 and is buried in the Madison Cemetery on the Dale Bennett property on the Board Road.
Cynthia and Reuben were the parents of Hardy Madison born about 1870. On April 17, 1897 Hardy married Mrs. Amy Dexter. Hardy was listed on the 1870 Tuscarora Township Census as Hardy Hall age 1 year. He is living with Reuben and Cynthia Madison. They must have adopted him from a nearby family of Halls as he is Hardy Madison in 1880 census.
Cynthia kept the property adjacent to the Culver Homestead for her daughter until she became of age. The property was deeded back to the Culver farm, which is now owned by Dale and Carol Brotzman. It has been in the family since before 1845. The Brotzman/Culver Pennsylvania Century Farm was officially designated in August 2001. Margaret or Maggie as she was known by, and her husband Walter Scott were residing in Lopez, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania September 10, 1892 when they sold her property in Tuscarora Township to James Jarvis Culver for 200 hundred dollars. They moved on to California with Cynthia.

Wavie (S.) B. (Bennett) June 27, 1872 – November 13, 1954
Chet was the son of Aaron and Estella Buck Culver and Wavy the daughter of Davis Dimock and Cornelia Very Bennett. They were married November 18, 1890 according to the Bennett Genealogy. I have wills to support documentation of this family. Their children were: Marthena Culver (1891 - June 6, 1893 buried here at Beaver Meadows) and Ralph Culver buried here in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery. Both Chet and Wavie’s services were held here at the church.
Wavie received her unusually beautiful name from the rolling wheat fields the day she was born. Her father looked out and seen the beautiful waving wheat, and remarked we will name her Wavie!
Chester Culver was a trustee to the Beaver Meadows Church. His wife was likened to a patron saint to the Ladies Aide doing whatever was needed. This family along with their son Ralph and his wife Ruth kept the church going through the hardest of times. They paid for a stained glass church window, which was to be left blank in honor of those who could not afford to pay $50.00. The window was later sold to the Clifford Clapper grandchildren in honor of their grandparents. As a preservation act, the funds were used to repair and place storm protection on the windows. We are grateful to Wavy for excellent records kept in the Sunday school notebooks as to projects that were being done in the early 1900’s to preserve and improve the church.

*** Culver, James C., August 1, 1802 – November 5, 1885
Margaret French, his wife March 12, 1807 – April 4, 1888
James was a Captain in the Pennsylvania State Militia. They were married December 29, 1824 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the famed Rev. War hero Timothy Culver and Mary Brink Culver who resided with them when they removed from the Ulster area of Bradford County to Tuscarora Township. Margaret was the daughter of Aaron and Mary Meyers French. They called the property Francis and Jeanette Brotzman, now owned by Dale and Carol Brotzman on the Board Road home. Mary Brink Culver died here February 25, 1825. It is not known where she is buried. Possibly here at Beaver Meadows, maybe Stevensville, we just do not know as there is no headstone located anywhere for her nor positive records of her burial place.
The will of Margaret Culver records she was to be buried directly behind the “Beaver Meadows Meeting House”. Please take note she referred to the church as a meetinghouse, not a church. This family was traditionally Congregational before coming to Beaver Meadow. James signed the Tuscarora Rush Religious Compact. There were accommodations made for the Congregationalists in the Compact.

Myrtle, daughter of George and Florence Tallady moved to California. She remarried to John C. Gross 1859 - 1928. James Culver was married for a second time on February 11, 1905 to Anna Jones the daughter of William and Betsey Jones February 11, 1905, by Rev. A. E. Potter and by witnessed by the George Wood family and Elmer Clapper. They were married at West Auburn, PA
James was the son of James Jarvis and Catherine Potter Culver. James did a little counterfeiting of quarters with LeRoy Featherbay and another unidentified man in his younger years. They did the counterfeiting in what is known as the Cecil Repsher home. They sent Clark Brotzman to town to buy them chewing tobacco with the coins. He didn’t know they were counterfeit!
A Hettie Marbaker clipping Killed by the Hootch
On Sunday Afternoon, James C. Culver and two other friends met at the home of Walter Scott, up Clapper Hill way. It is alleged the company did a little "Celebrating" with some "Hooch" to help things along. Two of the men went home sometime during the night, and Scott went to bed. The next morning he arose and was horrified to find Culvers lifeless body alongside the kitchen stove. Scott summoned help, and Dr. Austin of town was called. Under the circumstances he declined to give a death certificate and directed that the coroner be notified. Which was one, and that official was Dr. A. B. Lyon of Ulster and accompanied District Attorney Schrier of Bradford County proceed with an investigation. A post mortem examination was held and the deceased mans stomach was removed for analysis. It is said by Scott that the party had been drinking, "but not enough to hurt themselves." However the truth of this statement is not born out of -- Culvers death. Culver was a man of about 50 years and was survived by his widow, and estimable woman. Funeral services will be held at his home this Wednesday and internment will be held in the Beaver Meadow Cemetery.
1900 Census, Tuscarora Twp, shows Myrtle's age quite a bit different. And it also says she is mother of only one child (Herals) and one is living. What about Jarvis?

Mr. Charles Davis of Lime hill showed slides of his recent trip to South America. The same scenes Ruth and Ralph might have seen on their Honeymoon. There were about 100 friends and neighbors attending. They were presented with an electrical appliance and served a four tier wedding cake prepared by Mrs. Arden Campbell. The Rev. Darreld Shoop read an appropriate poem

source quotes June 7, 1865
He was born May 10, 1836, the son of James C. and Margaret French Culver, he married Catherine Potter in December 1858
* Historians note regarding the Culver family origin. All of the church families whose ancestry comes from the Culvers originate from James C. and Margaret French Culver. They came to Tuscarora Township prior to 1845. They brought with them his mother, Margaret Brink Culver. She was born March 8, 1764 the daughter of James and Rachel Brink Culver. She could well be the first death in the Beaver Meadows area on February 25, 1845. Her husband the famed Revolutionary War hero Timothy Culver had died in Hornbook, Pennsylvania February 1, 1829 where he was buried. It is not known where she was buried. The Culvers made their home where the Francis Brotzman family called home. The farm has been in the Culver family in one branch or another every since. The present owner as of November 2000 is Francis Dale and Carol Hoose Brotzman. The children of James C. and Margaret French were as follows: Louanna and Daniel who died as infants, Harriet (Mrs. John Clapper), James Jarvis who married Catherine Potter Culver widow of his brother Timothy Culver, Timothy Culver married Catherine Potter, Adolphus Culver who married Cynthia Hardy, Mary (Mrs. Nathan Perry Babcock), Aaron who married Estella Buck, Elizabeth (Mrs. Andrew Cobb, Mrs. Elmer Cobb) Josephine (Mrs. Nathan Cobb) and Margaret (Mrs. George Hughes and Mrs. Suel Warner). Incidentally the Cobbs, Nathan, Andrew and Elmer were all sons of Calvin and Phoebe Stone Cobb. Timothy and Adolphus Culver died in the Civil War. James Jarvis had encouraged his brother Timothy to join. When he was killed, he was devastated. It is said that is why when he came home from the war he married Timothy’s widow Catherine Potter, daughter of Rufus and Catherine Johnston Potter.
The early Culver family tree evolves as follows: Timothy Culver Jr. was born December 29, 1741. He married second to Mary Brink that died in Tuscarora Township. He was the son of Timothy Culver Sr. a Loyalist in the American Revolution. He fled to Canada. Timothy Sr. was married to Ann. His father was John Culver 1640 – 1725 married to Mercy Clark daughter of James Clark. John’s father was Edward Culver married to Ann Ellis, his father was Edward Culver born 1600 in England. His father was John Culver. Mary Brink was the daughter of James and Rachel Bunnell Brink. This is another large family tree culminating with Thomas Bunnell born in 1609. Without going into great detail, the Revolutionary War soldier Timothy was married first to Rebecca Clark, a Loyalist. This may have been the reason for the divorce! Our branch of Culvers is very patriotic to the good old USA. Timothy’s father retreated to Canada. Members of this family can claim memberships in the DAR and Loyalist organizations.
