101 Marriages and One Baptism
September 2002
Richard Bedford, Jr. was born in Yorkshire, England on September 17, 1812, the son of Richard and Grace (Varley) Bedford. He came with
his parents to the United States and, by 1820, they were settled in Bethel, Vermont. Richard Bedford, Jr. entered the ministry
of the Methodist Episcopal Church and took up his first charge in 1833. He continued until 1849, serving in churches
throughout the state of Vermont. In 1849 he moved to Campbellsville, Pennsylvania to take care of his aging parents. Richard Bedford, Jr.
died on January 31, 1884.

The material shown here is reproduced with the permission of the Sullivan County Historical Society (SCHS). In November 2001, the SCHS purchased the Diary
of the Reverend Richard Bedford from a couple in the Elmira, New York area. There had been an earlier article in the Elmira Star Gazette
on how the diary was found in an old shed, which itself makes interesting reading. The diary contains birth, death and
marriage records from 1850 through 1883. There are also records of deeds, letters, and records of transactions
all dealing with people and events in or nearby to Sullivan County. The Reverend Bedford was an adjacent property
owner and very close friend of John Campbell, the founder of Campbellville. Here we reproduce that part of his diary
that covers 101 marriages and one baptism in this area, the great majority of which were transacted in Campbellvill itself.
