Chronology

1865

--Diocese of Pittsburgh organized

--Dec. 10; First Recorded Episcopal Worship in Sharon

1866

--Feb. 14; Baptism of Edith Kent Williamson by Bishop Hopkins

--June 17; First Regular Worship

--June 20; Parish organized and first Vestry elected

--August 7; Cornerstone laid for Church building

1868

--Parish officially taken into Union with the Diocese

1893

--Cornerstone laid for present building under the title

   “The Church of St. John the Divine”  

1900

--February 7; Consecration of the Church by Bishop Whitehead under the title “St. John’s Church”

1911

--13 Counties in Northwestern Pennsylvania separated from Pittsburgh to form Diocese

1914

--Parish House built and dedicated

1929

--Gymnasium, Kitchen, and Swimming Pool added onto Parish House

1930

--Baptistry, Holy Innocents Chapel, and All Saints’ Chapel furnished and endowed; new entrance

1940s

--FORWARD Movement publication begins in St. John’s Church under the direction of The Rev. Harold Weaver, Rector

1964

--Major renovation of nave and choir; organ expanded

1969

--May 18; Forker-McDowell Memorial Carillon Dedicated

1982

--Renaissance Campaign; exterior renovation and maintenance work

1986

--May 25; Episcopal Community Services founded and dedicated
