Mount
Hope M. E. Church— In January 1851, a revival of religion took place,
as a result of Methodist preaching, in a school-house near New Lebanon,
in Mill Creek township. Many of the converts obtained, were residents
of New Vernon township, and, in the following spring, organized the
Mount Hope Church, at the house of George Marsteller. Rev’s Elisha
Wheeler and John Abbott, conducted their movements, and a class was
formed, with Elisha Moore as leader. Meetings were continued at
Marsteller’s residence, and at the school-house, in New Vernon village,
until 1854, when a meeting-house was built, on land deeded by Joseph
and Daniel Halloway, for that purpose, and under the superintendence of
the zealous and active Robert Beatty, who hewed the timbers himself.
There were about twenty members, when it was built, and the number has
since increased to 128.
