doses. The purging out of this leaven of discontent was that which
saved the life of the congregation, and enabled it subsequently to renew
its strength like an eagle. He was here during the war and so at a
time when the attention of the people was absorbed with the interests of
state and many absent in their country's service; hence his ministry was
not so visibly successful as it might otherwise have been. He was,
however, an earnest, self-sacrificing worker, and is still kindly
remembered by the people. Indeed it has been more than once hinted
to me that he 'did more visiting on his one leg than some other people
do on two.' Mr. Tedford did his work
honestly and well.
Pastorate of Rev. J. R.
Brittian, D.D.
The fifth pastorate of the church - - that of the Rev.
J. R. Brittian began July 1, 1866. There were but ninety
members then on the church roll. These ninety people were
scattered over a region of eight miles square. In the outlook,
there seemed to be an opportunity for plenty of hard work without much
fruit. But in this small membership there were some of the best
people this region has ever known - - men
