Joseph Polk, 96, could recall Stoneboro's past
Joseph
Merrill Polk, 96, of Stoneboro, died early Sunday morning in the
Mercer County Home. He had been a resident of the home for a
number of years.
Born in Stoneboro May 15 1875, he was a son of
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Polk. He married Elmira Law on May 8, 1904, and she
died Nov. 1, 1965.
He was a son of slave parents who were among
the early Stoneboro residents. His family came to that area 115 years
ago and Mr. Polk could recall many of the interesting highlights from
the community's history. Although living in the mercer home when
Stoneboro had its centennial celebration in 1966, he was able to attend
some of the events.
He was formerly superintendent of the ice
house when the ice business flourished at the lake. He also worked at
the New York Central Railroad and for the Stoneboro Fairgounds. Surviving is one nephew, Harvey Grannison, of Stoneboro. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Funeral
services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Waters Funeral Home,
Stoneboro. Burial will be in the Amasa Stone Historical Cemetery,
Stoneboro. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this
evening and Tuesday afternoon and evening.
