  Susan Dock Bigler

DEATH OF MRS. BIGLER

Mrs. Susan Bigler, mother of Gov. William Bigler, of Pennsylvania, and Gov. John Bigler of California, died at her residence in Delaware township, Mercer county, on Wednesday the 18th with age about 70 years. Her disease was paralysis. The first attack occurred two years since; the third and last on Sunday, 12th. After three days of suffering, she expired on Wednesday following. She was a strict member of the Presbyterian Church, and died in the fullest confidence of the christian. The Pittsburg Union informs us that she was born in Lancaster county in the year 1784. Her father, Philip Dock was an old resident of that county, in high repute for integrity among all his neighbors, and noted for his sternness and indomitable energy. She married Jacob Bigler. About 33 years of age, with a large family of children, they moved to Mercer county, which was then almost a wilderness. About five years after, Mr. Bigler died, leaving her in that wild unsettled region, with ten children dependent upon her alone for support. She maintained them all, maintained them in knowledge, and impressed upon their minds lessons usefulness to guide them safely and with honor through subsequent life. During the 28 years of her widowhood, she resided upon the same old farm, about nine miles from Mercer, on which she died. From the quiet homestead, her children, as they grew up around her, went out on the journey of life in different directions. At her death one son is Governor of Pennsylvania and another Governor of California.
