IN MEMORIAM
Reuben V. Hilands one of Fredonia's most respected citizens died Sunday at 5:30 PM. Mr. Hilands had a slight stroke about 10 days ago and did not recover. He was conscious up to near the last, while not able to speak but few words. Mr. Hilands will be sadly missed by his friends and his townfolk will miss his manly distinguished figure on our streets.
Mr. Hilands would have been 82 years old in February next. He was born at Erie in 1822 and was married 3 times and had 2 daughters by his 1st wife-
Eva McNeal of Elmira, New York, and Mrs. Davis of IL.
8 Children were born to his 2nd wife who died in 1881; Mary J., Emma E.,
dec., wife of Dr. B. E. Mossman of Greenville,
Mrs. T. M. Campbell Vienna, O., Mrs. A. M. Achre
of Grove City, R. M. of Cleveland, W. J. of Chicago, R. V. Jr.
of Sanford, N.C. and Frank who died a few years ago.
R. M. Hilands was at his fathers bedside the last few days of his father's life and
W. J. arrived Friday and was with his father but a few hours as he was called to New York.
6 of the children were at his funeral The body was placed in Dr.
Mossman's mausoleum to remain until spring when W. J. Hilands will build a new vault. A number of grandchildren were present.
Mr. Hilands resided in Greenville between 1872 and 1882 and for the past 15 years in Fredonia, a few years he lived in Fairview, Pa. He was elected County Treasurer in 1867 and was in the mercantile business for years after the Civil War.
Reuben V. Hilands enlisted in the U. S. service August 11, 1862 at Girard, Ohio in company C 105th Regiment Ohio Volunteers under Capt. Gilbert and Col. Hall to serve for 3 years and participated in the battle of Richmond,
Ky, and Perryville, Ky. He was wounded at Perryville Oct 8, 1862 by 'minnie" ball through the left lung and shoulder, also by a musket ball through the neck. He served in 14th Army Corps under Gen.
Rosenorans, discharged on surgeons certificate of permanent disability incurred in service Jan 14, 1864.
There were 6 brothers in US service; Reuben V., John W., Benjamin L., Alexander, David R. and Robert who was killed at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia.
The above is a record of one of the best citizens and indulgent father and faithful husband and we as citizens of Fredonia mourn our loss and extend our heartfelt sympathy to all his dear friends.
His present wife who survives him was formerly Miss Exa Byers of Fairview Township and she has the sincere sympathy of the community in her
breavemant. Rev. W. T. Shannon, the Pastor preached the funeral sermon and
Rev. J. G. Giander of the M. E. Church made a few remarks.
