ELLSWORTH 0. BIGGIN

“We’ll miss Mr. Biggin” was the title of an editorial in the Sharon Herald recounting the passing of Ellsworth 0. Biggin, April 7, 1959.

A real pillar of First Methodist Church where he was a faithful member for more than a half a century. He served many terms as a Trustee and Treasurer of the Official Board and was often referred to as “the watchdog of the treasury.”

Mr. Biggin was also a successful businessman having owned and operated the J. D. Biggin & Sons Dairy for many years. No one will ever know how many hundreds of bottles of free milk he provided for needy children.

He was recognized in the community by serving two terms on the City Council; an honorary life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board; the oldest 50-year member of Lodge 250 F. and A. M.; and a member of Sharon Rotary Club where he took an active part in the club’s work for crippled children. He was also honored by being elected to the Board of Directors of the

Merchants and Manufacturers National Bank in Sharon and as a result of his keen insight into business and financial matters, made a real contribution to the bank.

During the ten years of his retirement from active business and until last few days of his life “E0” Biggin could be met almost every day of the week in the Sharon General Hospital visiting friends, acquaintances and other patients to cheer them up. Yes! Mr. Biggin will missed by all who knew him, but he will always be remembered as “kind old gentleman” who had nothing but good to say about everyone.

From 150 Years of Methodism, The Story of the First Methodist Church, Sharon, PA, compiled by Roscoe C. Wilson, 1959, pages 122-123.
