Dr.
James W. McKay, aged 64, of Waynesburg, until last June
president of Waynesburg College, and founder of the Shady Avenue
Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, died in the Grove City Hospital. Dr.
McKay was taken quite ill while on a business trip to Mercer
County. Dr. McKay was born in Lake Township, Mercer County, and attended
the Mercer Public schools, the Edinboro State Normal School and
Waynesburg College, graduating from the later in 1883, Two years later
he graduated from the Theological Seminary, Cumberland (Tenn)
University. His first pastorate was at Charmichaels, Pa. From there he
went to Pittsburgh where he organized and built the Shady Avenue
Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which at that time was known as the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church. After serving as pastor of that church
eight years, Dr. McKay went to Washington, Pa., where he organized and
built another church. From there he went to Waynesburg Colege as
financial agent and followed his service by serving as acting President
of the college two years. From 1901 to 1906 Dr. McKay was editor and
owner of the Waynesburg Daily Times, which paper is now operatied by his
son Rex McKay. During this period, Dr. McKay also served as right-of-way
agent for the Wabash Railroad, and later served in a like capacity for
the Pittsburg [sic] Railways Company. In 1906 Dr. McKay returned to
Washington, where he organized the Washington County Fair Association.
Besides his widow and Rex McKay, another son Lynn McKay, of
Jackson Center, and a daughter Marie McKay of Waynesburg survive.
