James Bestwick,
Sr., father of Mrs. Geo. W. Brigham, of this city, died at
his residence in Worth township, Mercer county, on Tuesday last [16 Mar
1881]. Deceased was born in England on December 1, 1779, and came to this country about
fifty years ago, and a few years thereafter settled on the farm where he resided until his death.
He was steadfast in his allegiance to the land of
his nativity, refusing to become a naturalized citizen of the United States,
although urged to do so.
He was the father of eleven children, four of whom
survive him, the oldest son living James Bestwick,
Jr., resided on a farm adjoining the old homestead and is now 74 years of age.
Until within the past year, although physically
weak, his mind was remarkable clear, and his memory of past events, especially those which occurred in his youth, was
truly wonderful. He was know and respected as a honest man, upright in his
dealings and respected by all.
