from Window to His Death
George Reeher of Wampum Has Neck Broken in Odd Accident Was Civil War VeteranGeorge Reeher, 75 years
old, a resident of Wampum, was killed on Sunday morning about 2:30
o’clock, when he fell from an upstairs window at the home of John
Parker of 15 Fisk street, where he was visiting.
Reeher suffered prostration from the heat a few days ago and it is
supposed that he hot [got] out of bed and sought the window to cool off,
when a second attack came on and caused him to lose his balance and fall. He plunged headlong a distance of about 15 feet.
Occupants of the house heard the noise of his fall and when they
ran into the yard, Reeher was lying still and without any signs of life.
Dr. J. H. Reed was summoned, as well
as Sample’s ambulance. The
doctor arrived a few minutes before the ambulance and Reeher breathed his
last about that time. The remains were taken to Sample’s morgue, where
they are prepared for burial. Yesterday
afternoon the body was shipped to Wampum, to the home of a son, where
funeral services will be held and interment will take place. Reeher came here on Saturday evening from New Castle
for a short visit. Mrs.
Parker, his niece says that he complained of feeling ill and she
persuaded him to remain over until yesterday, when he expected to go home.
Reeher stayed with the family until after 10 o’clock, playing
cards, when he retired. That was the last time seen or heard of the man until
the noise of his falling body attracted member of the house on Sunday
morning. A hurried
investigation disclosed the prostrate from lying on the ground and
scantily clad. How he came to his death is only a matter of conjecture, but
it is supposed he got out of bed, seeking relief from the heat, and
toppled down. Reeher was a veteran of the Civil war and had a fine
record. He had lived in
Wampum and New Castle for many years and was well known in Lawrence
County. He frequently visited
his niece, and his visits could be timed with the receipt of his pension. James Reeher of 33
Prospect street, this city [Sharon], is a brother of the deceased. He is survived by the following children:

Edward Reeher, Wampum; Charles Reeher, Beaver

Reeher, Pittsburg, and Mrs. Tillie Davis, Pittsburg. Sharon

Additional information on George W. Reeher: George W.
Reeher was the son of Isaac and Nancy Hofius
Reeher, born 1839, Mercer County, PA. He was in the
Pennsylvania Volunteers Company B, 57th Pennsylvania Infantry. He
was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, in June 1862. One
of eleven children, he married Louisa Fye,
daughter of Thomas and Mary Fye, on 30 May
1863 and they raised twelve children. He died on 11 Jul 1911 after
falling from an upstairs window at the home of his niece in Sharon,
PA. He is buried at Clinton Cemetery in Wampum, PA. Research
