    1. Evans moved with his parents to Belfast, Allegany Co, Sept 1828, then moved again to West Almond, Allegany Co. Then he moved to Annin Creek, McKean Co, Pa, Feb 1837. - Written on an envelope Addressed to W Evens 1905 from Lock Drawer 104, Marshall Mich.

      18th Army Corps, 1st Division, 3rd Brigade, 58 Regiment, Co. E

In March of 1885, Sylvester and his wife Angeline, while living in Norwich, PA, entered into an agreement whereby they leased their farm, house, furniture and farm implements and two cows to their daughter Cloe and her husband G.W. Windsor. They reserved for themselves the use of the house and 1 1/2 acres in which they would live with Cloe and G.W. Windsor. It appears that Cloe and G.W. were already living there at this time and that this was formalizing the agreement. In return, the Windsor's would care for them "in sickness and health". It was further stipulated that Sylvester and Angeline would eat "at the table of" Windsors. When absent from the home, Syslvester and Angeline would be expected to care for themselves. This agreement was for a period of 1 year unless all parties agreed to continue it. On Oct 1st 1885, it was agreed that Orson S Evans, in consideration for one half of the hay, oats, and potatoes, and the use of the cows and implements would fullfill the conditions of the contract (caring for Sylvester and Angeline) and take full possession (of the house)

On the 24th of October, 1885 Angeline wrote out her will in which she left everything that was hers to Orson, subject to the "support and maintenence of my beloved husband, Sylvester W Evens during his natural life and his burial after death in a manner corresponding to his situation in life" as a lien against the will. The will was registered for probate March 22, 1889 before J.M. Mcelroy, Register of Probate, Smethport, PA.

Notes for GEORGE W EVANS: Letter to Sylvester Evens

July 27 1886, Oregon Mills

Dear Father,

I now endevor to write you a few lines but it is with an acking heart and trembling hand as it is my duty to inform you of the death of my husband. He died on the 21st of this month, wiht the billious fever.

He was taken sick on Sunday wich was the 17 and then died on the 21 and has left a void wich will never be replaced again. But what is our loss is His gain, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh. It was His will and I must submit to it, but oh, it was very hard for me to give him up.

Dear father, be very cautious in breaking the news to mother. I try to be resigned to it as much as I possibly can, for I know he is gone and I shall see him no more on earth, but if we are good and follow the path marked out foruse we can meethim in heaven where there is no parting, no sickness and no death.

He was insensible when he died and had been for a day and night. He was not consious of anything going on. He didn't even know me. I was sick at the time and my sister also. We are both sick yet but better than we have been. I have a girl keeping house and live at my sister Caroline live at Mr Waters a friend of hers down here. She speaks of going to Washington, NC to live as soon as she gets well enough.

Father, I want you to all to continue to writing to me as you always have and not stop because George is dead. I want you to write us soon as you get this and let me know how you are. Give my love to mother and all the family. Caroline sends her love also. I hope you will recieve this soon and it may find you all in good health. My health is improving a little. I had George burried at my sisters where my mother and Father are buried and where I now live.

I have nothing to write worth relating. I want you to write just as you can and direct your letter to oregon Mills, Beaufort County, North Carolina. There is a regular mail running from Newbern here twice a week and I will get your letter better than I did before. Write to me as often as you can, I must now bring my letter to a close by saying may God bless you and protect your all in the sincere prayers of your affectionate daughter - Margaret

Note: The North Carolina Gazetteer does not list Oregon Mills but under the name Oregon, it directs one to look at South Creek. South Creek reads as follows: ...town in se Beaufort County on a peninsula formed by the mouths of Bond and Muddy creeks as they enter Pamlico River. Settled prior to 1794 when it was known as Stanton-Harrold for two men who operated a saw mill here. apparently known as Harold in the early nineteenth century and as Oregon (for the first steamboat to come up the Pamlico River - see Oregon Inlet) about the middle of the century. Inc. 1883 as Stanton. Inc. 1925 as South Creek, but no longer active in municipal affairs."
