Generation No. 1

1. John Fredrick(1) Smithgall was born August 27, 1830 in Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, and died October 02, 1885 in Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania. He married Rosanna SHARR March 11, 1851 in Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, daughter of Fred Shar and Hannah Gotshall. She was born November 06, 1831 in Pennsylvania, and died May 21, 1891.

Notes for John Fredrick Smithgall: In this work John's birth location is listed as Lycoming Co. as most references lists it as this. A few list it as Germany. My reason for listing as such is that Jacob Smithgall (1784-1862), who is likely related (possibly a father or uncle) is the only Smithgall listed in the US federal census for the county for 1830 and 1840. At the time of the 1830 census Jacob's son (Jacob 1812-1891) was not married and likely enumerated with his father's household. Had John's family emigrated to the area in the 1830's they would have likely been enumerated in the 1840 census, yet only Jacob is listed. The 1850 census lists no Smithgalls that could be John's parents. As for the 1860 census, all the Smithgall listed are accounted for in these family lines. John was married by this time, however the census list no unknown Smithgall's that would have emigrated to the area or could be John's parents. No other reference material has been located yet that put any other Smithgalls in the county during this time. The only other branch of Smithgalls that can be found is the ones in the Berks, Franklin and Philadelphia area. These Smithgalls are still in that area and it is very unlikely John is from that branch as he is not in any reference from that area that I could locate and they were in Pennsylvania prior to John's birth anyhow. Should anyone have any reference material or information that can bring more light on to John's parents or birth location, I would appreciate very much, as would all Smithgall researchers if you would share it with us.

Possible article relating to this William:
The Sullivan Review; March-December 1896; 5 Mar 1896
Lloyd SICK of Hillsgrove was in Dushore Sunday and related the following to the Chief. "William SMITHGALL and myself were fishing in the Loyalsock below Hillsgrove recently and had caught a nice mess of fish, topping off with a 14 inch trout. While we were admiring this beauty and congratulating ourselves we happened to look up and there not over 100 feet away stood a big bear. We had no desire for a close acquaintance with his majesty, and while we would not like to confess to being scared we didn't urge him to remain, when he waded into the creek, swam across and started up the mountain side opposite."
