Shaver Cemetery


Overbrook Road
Dallas Township, Luzerne County, Pa.


The land for this Cemetery was donated by Philip Shaver for whom the borough of Shavertown, Kingston twp., Luzerne County, Pa. was named.

The following is a list of people buried in the Shaver Cemetery as compiled by Mrs. J. Hall (SallyDawn) Shaver and Mrs. Joseph M. (Janice) Shaver in the year 1995.

In the past a list of people buried in Shaver Cemetery was compiled by a young man interested in local history and published in the March 30, 1977 issue of the Suburban News, Country Impressions Inc., Sweet Valley, Luzerne County, Pa., however it contains many errors.

Another list was found in "The Digger's Index" by Janet R. Schooley and it also contains errors.

This is not to say that our list is without errors, but we have compiled it from physically viewing stones still readable, by making rubbings of stones unable to be read easily and by testament from family members of those buried there.

(Elizabeth was the only daughter of Philip Shaver and first wife of Abel Munson)

Mary Ann wife of Philip Shaver
who died Jan. 27th, 1828 aged 57 years
(This is the Philip Shaver for whom Shavertown was named. At the foot of Philip's grave lies a stone which reads "Here Lies My Weary Feet")
(Mary Ann's maiden name is either Wickizer or Miller)

after serving 7 years as an American Seaman
Daniel Shaver, born Oct. 30, 1835 died August 2, 1864
of wounds received in 2nd Battle of Manassas Aug. 20, 1862
while serving in the 1st Regt. Penna. Rifles
(James Henry was the 4th son of Philip Shaver)
(Lovisa was a daughter of Joseph Montanye and a wife of James Shaver)
(Jared was a son of James and Lovisa Shaver and a grandson of Philip Shaver. Another stone at the cemetery contained this information, Jared R. Shaver, died Nov. 5, 1857 aged 24 yrs 9 mos, 10 days)
(Daniel was a son of James and Lovisa Shaver and a grandson of Philip Shaver)

6Asa W. Shaver died Sept. 8, 1878 aged 70 yrs 8 mos & 1 day
Rachel his wife died Aug. 8, 1862 aged 57 yrs & 12 days
(Asa was 6th son of Philip Shaver)
(Rachel's maiden was Ramsay or Rumsey)

7William Shaver, Esq., died Sep. 20, 1852
age 58 yrs 3 mos & 7 days
(William was the third son of Philip Shaver)

8Rachel, wife of Wm. Shaver Esq. died June 22, 1847
aged 48 yrs & 8 days
(Rachel's maiden name was Robbins)

9Lusinda L., dau. of Wm. & Rachel Shaver died Nov. 7, 1823
in the 4th year of her age
(Lusinda L. was a gr. granddaughter of Philip Shaver)

(Harry Howard was a son of George McClellen and Rosa Shaver and a gr. gr grandson of Philip Shaver. He was born Oct. 2, 1892 and died Feb. 6, 1941 No stone marks his grave. he is believed to be the last burial in the Shaver Cemetery.)

43Ruby Cora Shaver
(Ruby Cora was an infant daughter of George McClellen Shaver, Jr. & Jennie Frances Knecht and a gr. gr. gr. granddaughter of Philip Shaver. No dates of birth or death are known and no stone marks her grave)
