"MABEL GANNON RITES IN AVOCA"
Mabel E. Gannon, 257 Millington Road, Peekskill, N.Y., formerly of
Avoca, died in Peekskill Wednesday, March 16, 1977.
Born [December 27, 1891] in Avoca, daughter of the late Martin J.
and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan, she was a
retired corespondent for War
Relief Services, National Catholic Welfare
Council, and Catholic
Charities, New York City. She was a member of Holy Spirit Church,
Peekskill.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John Croke (Delores), Peekskill,
with whom she resided; Mrs. Robert Schaffer (Rose Marie), Ship
Bottom,
N.J.;
two brothers, Andrew C. McGowan,
retired principal, Avoca High
School and Pittston Area Junior High
School; Francis McGowan, both of
Avoca;
two sisters, Mrs. Rose Grady, R.N., Avoca; Esther McGowan,
Newark, N.J.; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five
brothers: William, Leo, Ambrose, Martin, and Joseph;
and by two sisters: Mrs. James
Johnson (Agnes), and Mrs.
Edward Walsh (Loretta).
The funeral will be Saturday from the A.F. O'Malley Funeral Home,
728 Main St., Avoca, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church,
Avoca.
Interment, parish cemetery.
Viewing, Friday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m.

The funeral of Mrs. Mabel McGowan Gannon, Peekskill, N.Y., formerly of
Avoca, was held Saturday from the A.F. O'Malley Funeral Home, 728 Main St.,
Avoca, with mass in St. Mary’s Church,
Avoca. Rev. Thomas J. Carlin, pastor,
was celebrant.
Pallbearers, Stephen Croke, grandson, Patrick Grady, Jack, Scott
and James McGowan, Joseph Walsh, John
Clifford, and George Zuttowski,
all nephews.

William McGowan, infant son of Martin J. and Mary Ann Gillespie
McGowan, Avoca, Pa. died of the measles on
April 13, 1894. He would
have been one year old on April 28. He is survived by a sister, Mabel
McGowan; and by grandparents, Michael and
Bridget Jordan McGowan of
Avoca and formerly of Templeboy, Co. Sligo,
Ireland, and William and
Bridget Langan Gillespie formerly of Killala,
Co. Mayo, Ireland and
presently of the Langan settlement, Pittston
Township, Pa.; and a
great-grandfather, Martin Langan, formerly of
Balleybrunney, a townsland of Killala, Co. Mayo, and presently of the Langan
settlement, Pittston Township.

“Mrs. Agnes Johnson Claimed by Death"
Mrs. Agnes Johnson, 531 Grove St., died this morning at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. John Clifford, with whom she resided. Mrs. Clifford [nee Eleanor Johnson] is Avoca correspondent of The
Times.
A
lifelong Avoca resident [born March 14, 1895], Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of
the late Martin J. and Mary Ann Gillespie McGowan. Her
husband, James, died in 1926. She was a member of St. Mary’s R.C.
Church and of the Altar and Rosary
Society.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. George Zuttowski [Dorothy] ,
Newark, NJ;
Mrs. Michael Lombardo [Betty], New Brunswick, NJ; Mrs.
Forrest Snell [Jean], Seville, Spain; and Mrs. Clifford; two sons,
James, Avoca; and Charles, Philadelphia;
four brothers, Ambrose,
Francis, Andrew C., this community; and Joseph, Newark, NJ; four
sisters,
Mrs. John Gannon [Mabel], New York City; Mrs. Edward Walsh
[Loretta], Avoca; Esther, Newark, NJ; and
Mrs. Patrick Grady [Rose],
Avoca;
29 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. [In addition
to her husband, she was predeceased by three
brothers, William, Leo, and Martin McGowan].
The funeral will be held from the O'Malley Funeral Home, 728 Main
Street, Avoca, Monday, at 9 A.M., with mass in St. Mary’s Church at
9:30.
Interment, St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends may call tomorrow from 7 to 10 P.M., and thereafter from 2 to 4
and 7 to 10 P.M.
