KILLED ON THE RAIL:
The body of a man,
supposed to have been struck by the south bound midnight train on the valley
road, was found about eighty feet from the station at Port Blanchard this
morning. The dead man was identified as
THOMAS CURRY, of Pleasant Valley, who was about 40 years of age, and leaves a
wife and one child.
EXPLOSION AT THE
NOTTINGHAM:
About 10:30 am today, a
fall of rock in the Nottingham mine at Plymouth drove the accumulated gas into
the gangways where the men were at work with lamps, and an explosion
followed. The Leader reporter was
unable to ascertain the exact number of men in the mine at the time, but up to
1 pm, eight had been taken out, one of whom, JOHN D HUMPHRIES, died on the way home, and another, JOSEPH JONES, is
dying. The others injured are: JAMES
DUNSON, fire boss, badly burned about the face and hands; THOMAS LAKE, whose
daughter was killed in the squib factory explosion, slightly injured; JOHN P
THOMAS, face and head cut by being thrown against the rib; DAVID FOX, badly burned; JOHN DENNIN, badly
burned; PETER LYNN, burned and cut about the head and face. It is believed some of these will die.
JOHN CROSSIN, a member
of Company I, cannot be found, and it is supposed that he is covered up with the
mule that he was driving. WORL ROBERTS
is also missing. There are several
others in the mine in numbers 5 and 6 gangways, about a mile and a half from
the bottom of the shaft. Rescuers will
have to climb up and down planes and slopes to reach them and it will
undoubtedly be some time before they can be brought out. The explosion did comparatively little
damage to the mine.

Jersey City, NJ Feb 8:
Many of the towns and villages in NJ were shaken yesterday by a shock, which on
investigation, proved to be an earthquake.
It lasted only five or six seconds, but for many hours subsequent to the
first rumblings, the residents of the places visited were in a state of
consternation bordering on panic. So
far as can be ascertained, there was no loss of life. It was confined to Monmouth and Mercer counties.

ELSEWHERE:
Thomas A Edison has been
at work for a long time on a novel scheme in connection with the
phonograph. It consists in the
application of instantaneous photography to the illustration of sounds…. His
idea was that a speaker might be photographed from 8 to 20 times a second
during his entire speech, while at the same time the phonograph was recording
the spoken address. The phonograph and
the mechanism of the camera were so connected that when the reproduction took
place, both spoken words and photographic pictures would continue synchronously
together, and that when the photographs were thrown on a screen, by means of a
stereopticon, the
rapid recurrence of the
pictures would be such that the effect would be a continuous one, and as the
phonograph reproduced the address, the gestures and the facial expression would
appear to be that of the living speaker. The experiments were completely successful,
and Mr Edison now has in his laboratory, a large number of these dual
reproductions. As yet, there does not
seem to be any practical commercial value to the invention.
