Phillip A. Watkins, aged 76 years, a well-known former resident of New Castle, passed away at his home, 500 New Castle Avenue, Sharon, at 1:12 a.m. Sunday, after three days of pneumonia.
Mr. Watkins was born at Abergavenny, Wales, on March 12, 1860, son of Phillip A. and Margaret Davies Watkins. He was brought to the United States when a lad eight years old and the family settled in Harrisburg, PA. A few years later they moved to the Shenango Valley and settled at Wheatland.
Mr. Watkins was married to Anna McFiggen at West Middlesex, his wife died in January, 1929 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, New Castle. New Castle had been Mr. Watkins' home for 33 yers. He was employed the same length of time by the United States Steel Corporation and served for years as night master mechanic for the Carnegie Steel Co., here. He was pensioned by the steel corporation in 1925 after long pioneer work in West Middlesex, Farrell, Sharon, Wheatland and Sharpsville.
Surviving are the following sons and daughters, Robert A., Columbiana, OH, Mrs. E. E. Stockman, Harbor, Phillip A. Jr., Jess E. Paul D., New Castle, Samuel A. Los Angeles, CA, Walter E., Sharon, Charles A., Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. A. J. Rodkey, Youngstown, OH and Miss Jeanne A. Watkins, Sharon. Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. J. L. Cochran, Mrs. William F. Patterson and Mrs. Mary Campman of New Castle, Mrs. Charlotte Lutton, of Brownsville, PA, Mrs. Earl Ford, of New York City, one brother, Charles of New Castle, and fifteen grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a brother, William Watkins and a sister, Mrs. C. I. Brewster, of New Castle. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence in Sharon and at 3 plm. in the J. R. Hodge funeral home, New Castle. Interment will be made in Greenwood Cemetery here.
