WALTER PATTERSON IS CRUSHED TO DEATH BENEATH A CYLINDER OF CIDER PRESS ON WELLER FARM.
Walter Patterson of North Beaver twp., was killed Monday through the collapse of a cider mill of his son-in-law, Albert Weller, located between Mt. Jackson and Bessemer. Mr. Patterson was working about the cider press by himself and there were no witnesses to the sad accident, which resulted in the death of the victim in about an hour and a half after it occurred. A scaffold about three feet high was erected directly adjoining the press. Mr. Patterson attempted to remove the cylinder from its usual position when the scaffold broke precipitating both Mr. Patterson and the cylinder to the floor of the building. The heavy iron did not fall directly on Mr. Patterson, but his back was so badly crushed that death was inevitable. The victim lay in an unconscious condition for a half an hour until he was found by friends, and tenderly carried to the Weller home nearby. Medical aid was summoned but he passed away without regaining consciousness. An investigation disclosed the fact that Mr. Patterson's watch had stopped exactly at 10:30 o'clock, showing that the accident happened at exactly that hour.
The deceased was born in North Beaver twp. sixty-three years ago, and had lived all of his life in Lawrence County. He was widely known and respected, and enjoyed a wide circle of acquaintances.
He was survived by four children: Mrs. W.H. Patton of Hickory twp.; Mrs. George McConahy of Plaingrove; James W. Patterson of New Castle; and Mrs. Albert Weller of North Beaver twp. The funeral will be held from the Neshannock church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
