J. Nessley Kirker aged 85 the only Civil War veteran of Zelienople, died Tuesday in his home on West New Castle Street, Zelienople, [probably carbon monoxide poisoning from a new heater whose] fumes overcame Mr. Kirker and his two daughters, Mrs. George Lusk and Miss Annie Kirker while they slept [daus have recovered].
Mr. Kirker was born in Perry Twp Lawrence Co. the s/o John S. and Elizabeth Kirker; he spent the greater part of his life on a farm in Lancaster Twp. Butler Co. later moving to a place near Ellwood City where he conducted a feed store and six years ago he went to Zelienople to live.
He was veteran of the Civil war having served one year and five mos. with the famous One Hundredth regiment, better known as "The Roundheads". Preceded in death fourteen years ago by wife Sarah Matthew Kirker.
Survived by two daughters and a son, David C. of Wellsburg, West. VA, a brother, Olney Addison Kirker of Sharon; sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was member of the Zelienople United Presbyterian Church.
Funeral servies will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from the Zelineople home and at 2:30 Rev. J.B. Brown will conducte services in the Wurtemburg United Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in church cemetery.
