Mrs. Johnson Dies Suddenly

Wife of George W. Johnson Stricken Fatally At Summer Home Near Butler

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Johnson, wife of George W. Johnson of 318 Highland Avenue died unexpectedly at an early hour Sunday morning at Camp Winifred, the summer home of the Johnson families in Armstrong county between Butler and Kittanning. Her sudden death has proved to a great shock, not only to the bereaved family, but to her innumerable friends, as she had been in good health until an hour before her death occured. Last spring she had a serious illness due to heart trouble, but had recovered and was seemingly in the best of health when she went to Camp Winifred Saturday morning with her husband and son Charles H. Johnson. It was about midnight Saturday when she was taken ill and grew worse rapidly. A physician was called, but her condition was such that little could be done and she passed away about 1 o'clock. The remains were brought to the family home on Highland avenue Sunday. Mrs. Johnson was born at Moravia in December 1849 and was 68 years of age. Her maiden name was Osborne. She was married to George W. Johnson, February 23, 1868 and if she had lived until next spring, would have observed her golden wedding anniversary. For the first few years after their marriage the couple lived near Wampum, but about 45 years ago came to this city and had made their home here since. Since early childhood, Mrs. Johnson had been a member of the First Methodist Church and had taken an active part in its work as well as in other movements, such as various charities. She was one of the faithful workers in her Social Union of the church and by her many generous gifts and her unflagging interest in all its activities she had been one of the most helpful members of the organization. Since the Red cross was organized in this county she had been one of the most faithful attendants at the sewing classes and given her time freeely. In addition to making generous gifts, she was a devoted wife and mother, a true friend and a helpful and unselfish neighbor. To her countless friends, her death brings a sense of deep loss as her many kindness was evidence in many ways.

She is survived by her husband, George W. Johnson, and by one son, Charles H. Johnson. Another son William I. died in 1903. In addition to her husband and son, she leaves two brothers, Joseph Osborne of New Castle, and James Osborne of Dayton, Ohio, also five grandchildren, Charles H. Johnson, Jr., Phillips Johnson, Winifred Johnson, George W. Johnson II, and Thomas Johnson.

Interment was made in Oak Park Cemetery.
