Mrs. Adams Dies
Mrs. Hazel E. Adams, 79, formerly of 310 Glen Avenue, died at 1:07 am today in Blair's Nursing home, North Sewickly Township, where she had been a patient for two years.
She was Ellwood City Borough's first woman tax collector, a former schoolteacher here, and a prominent member of church, civic, and social organizations.
Born November 6, 1895, in Butler County, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Laura Studebaker Currie and attended Slippery Rock State College.
Her husband, Charles A. Adams, former superintendent of the Matthews Conveyor Company here died in 1935.
Mrs. Adams was tax collector for the borough from 1957-1965, the first woman to win election to the post. During World War II she was employed at the National Tube Plant here in the Industrial Relations department.
She taught school for five years, 3 of them in the Ellwood City area.
She was a member of First United Methodist church and a member of the Susannah Weslyan Class of the Church.
Her other affiliations included the following: Charter member of Ellwood City Hospital Auxiliary, member and past president of Woman's Club, past matron of the order of Eastern Star, past president of Ellwood City Garden Club, and member and former president of both the YWCA Council and Ellwood City Council of Girl Scouts.
Surviving are four children, Charles A. Adams and Mrs. Loyd (Phyllis) Koach, both of Ellwood City, Mrs. Albert (Avereal) Rhea of Cleveland, and Mrs. Lewis (Peggy) Shirey of Poland, Ohio.
She also leaves 15 grandchildren and two brothers, Harold and Dale Currie, both of New Castle.
A sister, Miss Molly Currie, and two brothers, Gaylord and Joseph Currie, preceded her in death.
At 12:30 p.m. Sunday the body will be taken to the First United Methodist Church where it will be in state until the time of the funeral at 2:00pm. Rev. D. True Spangler, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery.
