The one hundred and fifty first regiment was organized at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg Pa. under the command of Colonel Harrison Allen of Warren County and lieutenant colonel George F. McFarland of Juniata County. Company D was largely composed of instructors and students of McAlisterville Academy. Lieutenant Colonel McFarland was the principal and nearly a hundred in the regiment had been school teachers. From Nov to Feb of 1862 they were placed on picket duty at Union Mills Va. Transferring from there to General Reynold's army corps and many among the regiment became sick. Were under heavy fire at Chancellorsville, holding their position throughout the battle, then moving back to camp near White Oak Church. On the 1st of Jul at Gettysburg they held their position under heavy fire until forced to retire through the streets of Gettysburg, halting at Cemetery Hill with only 92 men left. Remained till the final charge of Gettysburg, losing three fourths of their men. Lt. Col McFarland was wounded which resulted in the loss of one leg (amputated on the field) and the mutilation of the other leg. Were mustered out at Harrisburg 27 Jul 1863 at end of term of enlistment.
