St. Mary's Catholic Church
Shade Valley, Cromwell Township
Information for this web page was taken from the Sesqui-Centennial of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Shade Valley, Pennsylvania 1798-1948.
A Brief History of St. Mary's Catholic Church
There is some doubt about the actual year in which St. Mary's Catholic Church was built. According to Rev. Francis Reed Hoy in his "Mountain Comment" (September 28, 1947), he has an item from "The Pittsburgh Catholic" (September 11, 1947) that says: "The dedication of St. Mary's Catholic Church there (Shade Valley) by Bishop Michael O'Conner of Pittsburgh, was held September 1847.
Taken from the paper's files of a century ago, the notice seems to clarify a debated point regarding the erection of the little stone church which serves the congregation to the present day. The late Rev. John A. Kerkoska, pastor of Mt. Union, (1922-1942), reported in the Cathedral dedication volume that the church had been built in 1840, though the more or less official lists of parishes and pastors of the diocese carried in "The Register" of March 18, 1945, set 1848 as the time of the founding of the church.
The Catholic item also quotes that a "Catholic colony has existed there for 60 years, with Mass offered occasionally in private homes." That goes back to 1787, the year the federal constitution was drawn up in Philadelphia, two years before George Washington was inaugurated President, and 22 years before Prince Gallitzin became the first resident pastor of the diocese.
Bishop O'Connor, a well educated man, showed his knowledge of Latin by giving the new church the title of "Our Lady of Vallambrosa" (Literal translation of Shade Valley), but we have never heard it called anything but St. Mary's.
Since 1787, Shade Valley has been in Huntingdon County, PA.
The following history of St. Mary's was written May 26, 1948 by Father John Canova, of St. John the Baptist Church, Monaca, Pennsylvania: "It is very hard to reconstrue the history of Shade Valley as documents and facts are lacking. Tradition has it that a small number of Catholics settled there between 1790 and 1800. The turmoil then existing further West (?) in the Catholic settlement of Sportman's Hall - now St. Vincent's, Latrobe have restrained them from joining that group. This may equally be said of the other settlers who remained at Frankstown, Sinking Valley and others. You may rightly claim that Shade Valley is, after Sportsman Hall, at least, contemperaneous with Sugar Creek, Waynesburg, etc. in the present Pittsburgh Diocese. It may also be true that Prince Gallitzin visited the place from Tanneytown in 1796 and afterwards on his occasional journeys from Loretto to Baltimore. It has been said that the Archbishop Hughes preached there when but a deacon."
We are certain that in 1820, Rev. Thomas Heyden was sent to the Bedford Mission, of which Shade Valley was one being visited once a month, or once every two months. Perhaps Father John O'Reilly attended it for a while in 1831 from Newry and Father Bradley from Huntingdon after 1835. A diocesan document of 1839 seems to indicate that Father Heyden was asked to take charge again of Shade Valley. A note in Bishop Kendrick's diary tells us: "July the seventh day (1842) I confirmed sixteen in a place called Shade Valley in Huntingdon County . . . Eighteen Catholic families are living in the vicinity. Rev. J. A. Miller visits them four times a year." This priest must have taken care of the place for a short time. According to the Catholic Directories, Shade Valley was again attended by Father Heyden from 1846 to 1848; then from Path Valley 1849-1850; from Hollidaysburg by Father Thomas Farrel 1851-1853; then from Huntingdon 1854-1884 by Father P. Doyle 1855-1860, Father T. Wall 1863-1864, Father O'Gallagher in 1865, etc. According to some authority the small stone church was built by Father Heyden about 1848.
For the Pittsburgh Catholic - Shade Valley, PA, Tuesday, September 9, 1845.
Mr. Editor - As the Progress of our Religion brings joy to the bosoms of our Catholic Brethren, it will be most gratifying for them to learn that on Sunday, August 31st the Corner Stone of a new church was laid (with the Bishop's permission) by Rev. John C. Brady in Shade Valley, Huntingdon County. A ceremony so novel in this part of the county and a desire of hearing the Reverend Clergy man who officiated and preached, brought a large concourse of people together. The day was beautiful, everything in fact, conspired to make it a day of happiness to the Catholics of Shade Valley. It is now 58 years since the first Catholic Missionary visited this place. At that time there were only two or three Catholic families located here. Since they have increased, amounting to 23 families at present. The Holy Sacrifice of Mass was offered, during the above period beneath the roof of a humble dwelling. We looked forward with hope to the day when the first Stone of a Church would be laid, and on last Sunday that hope was realized. After the ceremony of laying the corner stone was performed, Rev. Brady ascended a platform erected for the occasion and taking his text from the 11th Chapter of St. Paul's Epistle to the Hebrews, 6th verse "But without Faith it is impossible to please God." He proved in the most clear, forcible, and eloquent manner, that faith was ours, and without our faith, it was impossible to please God, except a person through invincible ignorance. He was listened to throughout with marked attention, and it is to be hoped his eloquent discourse made favorable impressions upon the minds of his hearers. Our Church, I trust, will be ready for Consecration next summer and then we shall have the happiness of Worshipping God is his holy temple.
M.L.
Editor's Note - Since the Logans lived next to
the present church and Mass was said in their home, my guess is that Mary
Logan wrote the above letter.
