Will of William Jeffries:

In the name of God, amen I William Jeffries, Farmer of German Township, Fayette County Pennsylvania, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind memory and understanding(praised be God for it) considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and to the end I may be the better prepared to leave this world whenever it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and declare this my last Will and testament in manner following,(that is to say) First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator and my body to the earth to be interred in the burying ground of Cumberland Presbyterian at New Salem and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life. And as to such worldly estate as it hath pleases God to intrust me with I dispose of the same as follows. First I direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible out of the first moneys’ that shall come into the hands of my executors from any portion of my estate or personal, Second I give and bequeath to my wife Sarah all my real and personal property situated in German Township and all moneys due me Except so much as is necessary for my children herin after named Together with the Stacy farm And for which I hold the deed.  It is my desire that when ever they refund to my Executor or Executrix the full amount that I have paid on it and its interest that my executor and executrix will make them a clear Deed for said Farm it being situated in Springhill Township Fayette County Pa and my wife to have the whole amount due me on said Farm.  I Further desire that if said Amount due me on the aforesaid Farm(and for which I hold a Deed) is not paid to my Executor or Executrix in one year after my death then it is my desire that It remain as my other property subject to my wifes control so long as she may live.  And I further desire of the amount given to her that to each my sons arriving at the age of 21 years during her life that she give to such son A horse saddle and bridle valued at $125 or its equivalent as amount fit and to each of my daughters marrying during her life an Outfit equal to that which I gave to my daughter now married.  She being the judge of the equality of the outfit.  And I further desire that in case of the death of my wife before the marriage or the arrival of the age of 21 years then it is my desire that such of my said children shall have the sum of $125 in addition to their regular Shares of my estate at their Mothers death.  Third at the death of my wife Sarah it is my desire that my property shall be appraised by three disinterested persons and sold giving to each of my children the following shares. To my daughter Elizabeth, sons Christopher, William, and Taylor each I give and bequeath the sum of three hundred dollars in addition to what I have already given them.  The remainder of my estate after paying the funeral expenses of my aforenamed wife to be divided into shares of one hundred dollars each and divided among the following named children, Mary Ann Stacy, Elias Jeffries, Rebecca Newcomer, Robison Jeffries, Joseph Jeffries, Sarah Jeffries, Harriet S Jeffries, Ellen J Jeffries, John Henderson Jeffries, Martha Jeffries, Isaac Newton Jeffries, Milton Jeffries, and George Jeffries in such manner that each daughter shall receive one share of One hundred dollars and each son to receive two shares of one Hundred dollars each, this division to continue in the same ration to the above named until the remainder of my estate is divided. I also give to my youngest son George Jeffries in addition to the share named My perpetual Scholarship in Waynesburg College.  I nominate and appoint my wife Sarah Executrix and my Brother Taylor Jeffries Executor of this my last will and testament.  In witness whereof I the said testator William Jeffries have to this my last Will and testament set my hand and seal this 22nd day of September AD 1864

Signed sealed published and declared by said Testator William Jeffries as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his request have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto also the interlineations of except so much as is necessary as outfits for my children hereinafter named words my each estate and the name Martha Jeffries were made before the signing sealing of the above

    Seal  Be it remembered that on the 6th day of October AD 1864 Before me George Morrison Register for the probate of Wills and granting Letters of Administration in and for Said County personally came Joseph Woodward and Lynn S Herbert the subscribing Witnesses to an instrument of Writing purporting to be the last Will and testament of William Jeffries decd who being duly Affirmed according to the law did dispose and Say that they were present and Saw the testator William Jeffries Sign and Seal and heard him declare the same as and for his last Will and testament When of sound and disposing Mind Memory and understanding that they Signed and Witnessed thereto at the Request of the Testator in his presence and in the presence of each other that they knew of no undue influence used or later will made In Testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and the seal of the Registers Office the day and year above written.
